R â€â€? Restricted It seems a bit of a stretch at first â€â€? if not for the actor, then at least for an audience used to seeing him looking so darned natty all the time Some material may be inappropriate for young children Brosnan is touching and believable in his court scenes, and never more so than at the film's highly satisfying climax A United Artists release, "Evelyn" is rated PG for thematic material and language In "Evelyn," this dashing Irish actor has to tone down his good looks a bit, just to be believable in the role of a down-and-out, jobless dad whose wife leaves him for another man PG â€â€? Parental guidance suggested Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian But Brosnan eases into the part, and the movie just as surely begins to tug at our hearts The script was written by Paul Pender, who met with Doyle's daughter, Evelyn, now living in Scotland, and decided he had to bring her story to the screen, eventually pitching it to co-producer Brosnan â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? General audiences At the Movies: 'Evelyn' Dec 12, 9:59 AM EST This holiday season, you can watch Pierce Brosnan save the world as James Bond in "Die Another Day Providing crucial love and support is Margulies' Bernadette, a chemist and part-time barmaid Sure, there's the requisite romance â€â€? here with Julianna Margulies â€â€? but that story line seems painfully thin Indeed, you'd have to be quite the Scrooge not to shed a tear at some point during this heartwarming and true story of a man who fights for the simple right to care for his own kids "Evelyn," directed by Bruce Beresford ("Driving Miss Daisy), is also a love story, but not the usual kind Doyle, who spends too much time drinking at the pub but is clearly a loving dad, starts to fight back "Evelyn" may not have the chills, thrills and expensive special effects of a James Bond movie, but it's a charming and moving family film, and Brosnan fans won't be disappointed Running time: 94 minutes After an ill-advised attempt to bust into Evelyn's orphanage, he enlists an Irish lawyer (Stephen Rea) to his cause It's as if the scenes were written out When Doyle's wife suddenly deserts her husband and kids at Christmas, Doyle is left to raise their daughter, Evelyn, and two sons, Maurice and Dermot, on his own The real love story is between Brosnan's character and his young daughter, played beautifully and naturally by 9-year-old Sophie Vavasseur Soon, the authorities come knocking, telling him that under Irish family law, he's unfit to raise his family alone The film charts the story of Desmond Doyle, an unemployed painter in early 1950s Ireland Bates fares better; he's irascible and eventually impassioned as Tom Connolly, who decides to bring the case to Ireland's Supreme Court, challenging the validity of the law under which Desmond's children have been taken All ages admitted But things don't really start moving until the lawyer's American colleague, Nick (Aidan Quinn), gets involved and the team recruits a grizzled expert on family law (Alan Bates) to the cause Three stars out of four They'll even get to hear him sing a few Irish ditties Some material may not be suitable for children The children are sent to church-run orphanages, Evelyn to one and the boys to another " Or, you can see him do something much more difficult: try to raise three small kids on his own Quinn, especially, seems underused The film turns into a familiar courtroom drama, but luckily there's enough interesting detail and emotion devoted to these scenes to give this a lot more heft than the usual courtroom fare PG-13 â€â€? Special parental guidance strongly suggested for children under 13 We're supposed to believe that there is a romantic competition going on between Nick and Desmond for Bernadette's affections, but we never see any evidence that there's anything going on between Nick and Bernadette All the film's other relationships play second fiddle to the lovely father-daughter chemistry that's generated here This supporting cast proves surprisingly uninteresting NC-17 â€â€?
