Although he remained a leading star, Brando's career waned in the '60s with a series of failures His most famous act of rebellion was his refusal in 1973 to accept the best actor Oscar for "The Godfather In May 1990, Brando's first son, Christian, shot and killed Dag Drollet, 26, the Tahitian lover of Christian's half sister Cheyenne, at the family's hilltop home above Beverly Hills He appeared in such plays as "I Remember Mama," "A Flag is Born" (a Jewish pageant with Paul Muni) and "Truckline Cafe All three wives were pregnant when he married them He created a naturalism that was sometimes derided for its mumbling, grungy attitudes " But his private life may best be defined by a line from "The Wild One," in which Brando, playing a motorcycle gang leader, is asked what he's rebelling against His mother, the former Dorothy Pennebaker, was small, willowy, compassionate and filled with creative energy came from the American heartland, born in Omaha, Neb She was revealed to be Irish, and they separated a year later " His box office power seemed finished until Francis Ford Coppola chose him to play Mafia leader Corleone in "The Godfather" in 1972 In his memoir, "Songs My Mother Taught Me," Brando wrote of being emotionally drained by "Last Tango," an improvised film that included several autobiographical speeches And he had the kind of brutal aggressiveness that I hate His exasperated father sent the boy to military school in an effort to instill discipline Although he remained in Hollywood, he refused to be part of it Henry Fonda reluctantly agreed The press made much of his motorcycle, leather jackets and T-shirts, his bongo drum playing " The actor followed with "Last Tango in Paris He was a distant, conservative man of French, English and Irish stock; the original family name was Brandeau "I am myself," he once declared, "and if I have to hit my head against a brick wall to remain true to myself, I will do it The family later moved to Santa Ana, Calif " They were divorced after he met Tarita Actor Marlon Brando Dies at 80 Jul 2, 1:45 PM EST Marlon Brando, who revolutionized American acting with his Method performances in "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "On the Waterfront" and went on to create the iconic character of Don Vito Corleone in "The Godfather," has died His image was a studio's nightmare "Hollywood is ruled by fear and love of money," he told a reporter Jocelyn was charged with getting Bud to kindergarten, a difficult task , when Bud was 6 " One of his greatest performances was overshadowed by an uproar over the erotic nature of the Bernardo Bertolucci film "I don't think the film is about the Mafia at all," Brando told Newsweek After a week with the young man, Adler declared: "Within a year, Marlon Brando will be the best young actor in the American theater Five years later, Cheyenne committed suicide, still depressed over the killing He commented softly to members of the Drollet family: "I'm sorry So did his romances and marriages "Anyone who denies this never understood what it was all about In a way, the Mafia is the best example of capitalists we have He proved a skilled pantomimist, especially in his depiction of the death of John Dillinger "Whaddya got?" was his reply He bought an island, Tetiaroa, which he intended to make part environmental laboratory and part resort " Instead, he sent a woman who called herself Sasheen Littlefeather to read a diatribe about Hollywood's treatment of Native Americans If I could trade places with Dag, I would He was 80 For his first film he declined several big studio offers and joined independent Stanley Kramer for "The Men" in 1950 The cause of death was being withheld, Seeley said, noting the actor "was a very private man Bud was constantly being reprimanded for misbehavior at school, infuriating his father Jocelyn Brando studied acting with Stella Adler, and Marlon decided to join her " Afterward, Drollet's father said he thought Marlon Brando was acting and his son was "getting away with murder He was expelled He had nine children Millions of words were written about his weight, his many romances and three marriages, his tireless â€â€? and, for some, tiresome â€â€? support of the American Indian and other causes, his battles with film producers and directors, his refuge on a Tahitian isle Most of his later films were undistinguished Christian, 31, claimed the shooting was accidental Seeley said arrangements would be private " Brando, whose unpredictable behavior made him equally fascinating off the screen, was acclaimed the greatest actor of his generation, a two-time Academy Award winner who influenced some of the best actors of the generation that followed, among them Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Jack Nicholson " It took longer Starting with Kowalski in the stage version of "A Streetcar Named Desire" and a startling series of screen portrayals, Brando changed the nature of American acting To research the story of paraplegic war veterans, he spent a month in a Veterans Administration hospital She was 25 I detest the character " He tried directing himself in a Western, "One-eyed Jacks," going wildly over budget The "Bounty" experience affected Brando's life in a profound way: He fell in love with Tahiti and its people The boy also displayed a talent for playacting, both in elaborate pranks and in plays and recitations "But it can't rule me because I'm not afraid of anything and I don't love money " The tragedy was compounded in 1995, when Cheyenne committed suicide His impact on screen acting was demonstrated by Academy nominations as best actor in four successive years: as Kowalski in "A Streetcar Named Desire" (1951); as the Mexican revolutionary in "Viva Zapata!" (1952); as Marc Anthony in "Julius Caesar" (1953); and as Terry Malloy in "On the Waterfront" (1954) His ego was very secure Details about Brando's funeral weren't disclosed In 1960 he married a Mexican actress, Movita, who had appeared in the first "Mutiny on the Bounty The image of Stanley seemed to have fallen on Brando, and he once protested to an interviewer: "Kowalski was always right, and never afraid " Nothing could diminish his reputation as an actor of startling power and invention Still, the ceaseless spotlight never made him conform He was schooled at the Actors Studio in New York, learning Method acting in which the performers closely identify with the role of the character they portray One hundred pounds heavier, he hired himself out at huge salaries for such commercial enterprises as "Superman" and "Christopher Columbus: The Discovery She had given birth to two daughters, Frances and Jocelyn, before Marlon was born He was sentenced to 10 years " Brando suffered through the tedium of his two-year contract with "Streetcar," and he never appeared in another play She solved it by leading him on a leash He was impressive, however, in several movies, among them the comedy "Bedtime Story" and the John Huston drama "Reflections in a Golden Eye Unable to join the war because of 4-F status, Brando at 19 moved to New York and stayed with his sister Frances, an art student Mrs Brando's private life turned tragic years later with his son's conviction for killing the boyfriend of his half sister, Cheyenne Brando, in 1990 A remake of "Mutiny on the Bounty" in 1962, with Brando as Fletcher Christian, seemed to bolster his reputation as a difficult star "I think it is about the corporate mind " His crusades for civil rights, the American Indian and other causes kept him in the public eye throughout his career He grew up a pudgy, mischievous boy who was called Bud to distinguish him from his father Most were commercial enterprises: "Desiree," "Guys and Dolls," "The Teahouse of the August Moon," "Sayonara," "The Young Lions I'm prepared for the consequences Brando died Thursday at an undisclosed Los Angeles hospital, attorney David J " His films after "Waterfront" failed to challenge his unique talent It was roundly booed The Tennessee Williams play made Brando famous, and his first signs of discomfort emerged He was blamed for a change in directors and a runaway budget though he disclaimed responsibility for either Brando also encouraged another young Omaha native, Dorothy McGuire , on April 3, 1924 When a leading man dropped out of a play, she pleaded with a young neighbor just home from college to take the role "He influenced more young actors of my generation than any actor," longtime friend and "Godfather" co-star James Caan said Friday through his publicist Young Marlon became exposed to the theater through his mother, a leader and occasional actress in the Omaha Community Playhouse " The latter was directed by Elia Kazan, who would remember him for "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1947 But audiences were electrified, and a new generation of actors adopted his style It changed his life " He was more effective as the insane army officer in Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" and parodying his "Godfather" role in the hit comedy "The Freshman He hated the clamor of fans and suffered through interviews He married actress Anna Kashfi in 1957, believing her to be East Indian After a heavily publicized trial, Christian was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and use of a gun Her ambitions often were unrealized, and she underwent periods of problem drinking Marlon Brando Jr Before the sentencing, Marlon Brando delivered an hour of rambling testimony in which he said he and his ex-wife had failed Christian Tahitian beauty Tarita who appeared in the film became his third wife and mother of two of his children " Brando was the unforgettable embodiment of the brutish Stanley Kowalski of "A Streetcar Named Desire," the mixed up Terry Malloy of "On the Waterfront" (which won him his first Oscar) and the wily Corleone of "The Godfather The film was an overwhelming critical and commercial success and Brando's jowly, raspy-voiced Don became one of the screen's most unforgettable characters He never wondered, he never doubted I'm afraid of it , and finally to Libertyville, Ill The lives of Dorothy Brando and her children were upset when the father was transferred to Evanston, Ill Seeley said Friday " Spencer's tale is told from the point of view of the mother, played by Victoria Clark "It's getting the right collaborators and finding the right cast and developing the material in a way that a delicate show like this probably needs to be developed â€â€? carefully out-of-town "The power and fire and heat that goes into being a creative artist like Craig and Adam is a very intense, special, inspiring thing That swirling straw hat would seem to be a likely candidate to eventually land off or even on Broadway 15, although there is interest from other producers "But for the interpretive artist, you are given this piece, and you have to realize it But the musical, which still uses Margaret as a narrator, expands the role of Clara (Celia Keenan-Bolger), a character Guettel found very sympathetic "I see them (mother and daughter) as one person, looking at their lives from a different point of view," Guettel says The two had known each other for more than 20 years and share the same agent "One (Clara) is in the moment and the other (Margaret) is looking back in a certain way on herself as she interprets, guides and even obstructs her own daughter "We are trying to do something that is sort of in the cracks â€â€? between musical theater and chamber opera," says the 39-year-old Guettel, making a face while trying not to say anything that might scare off theatergoers who run at the mention of the word "opera Guettel called the playwright for advice, saying he was stuck, and played some of the music for Lucas That love includes not only the romance between Clara and the handsome Fabrizio Naccarelli, but Margaret's sterile relationship with her husband 'Piazza' Tries Something Different Jan 28, 12:30 PM EST A young woman's white straw hat, carried by a soft summer breeze, swirls across the sun-dappled Florentine plaza and is caught by a handsome Italian youth The story is a richly observant dissection of two Americans abroad in early 1950s Italy: Margaret Johnson, a Southern matron trapped in an arid, unhappy marriage, and her daughter, Clara, a childlike, 26-year-old woman with the mind of a 12-year-old He talks about the piece's creation, which began with a suggestion from his mother, composer Mary Rodgers, daughter of the 20th century's supreme melodist, the legendary Richard Rodgers â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? On the Net: www We have been very lucky to have those productions, this one included, to really look at it in front of a paying audience " The composer agrees, although it has been a time-consuming journey Anticipated not only by its creators, particularly composer and lyricist Adam Guettel (who has been writing the piece for more than four years), but by all those who hold out hope for an art form struggling with its post-Sondheim identity in an age of rap and incessant revivals At one point, he even considered abandoning the project "Adam has the same melodic gift and musical curiosity that his grandfather had," says Tommy Krasker, who has produced several of Guettel's musical-theater recordings "I was so wrapped up in tugging the heartstrings, but Craig brought his sensibility and his great craft to the piece so that he turned it into something that is genuinely funny as well as mushy," Guettel says with a laugh " The intense, dark-haired composer, dressed in a fashionable black leather jacket and gray sweater, sits in an antiseptic conference room at the Goodman, hours before opening night No one is talking about the musical's life after the Chicago engagement ends Feb goodmantheatr e It's the daughter who falls for that Italian, and the novella explores their love and the mother's quandary over the seemingly impossible relationship "Funny and mushy at the same time is a good combination So I think I am a good intermediary who can bring the best out of the piece Guettel read it and found the piece "a genuine love story â€â€? the right kind of vessel for the sounds I wanted to make " Yet love â€â€? in all its forms â€â€? remains the focus of the show "There are four couples and within those couples, each of them is on that continuum of love â€â€? at one end, bitterness and a kind of rancor and loss; at the other end, that glorious bloom of first love," Guettel explains " The composer was looking for a change of pace after writing the rustic "Floyd Collins," his atmospheric musical tale of a 1930s Kentucky coal miner trapped below ground, and a modern song cycle called "Myths and Hymns " With "Piazza," he worked first with playwright Alfred Uhry, author of "Driving Miss Daisy," but the collaboration never took off, and Guettel grew discouraged Love at first sight Then it was on to Chicago in January for a larger production, overseen by the Intiman's artistic director, Bartlett Sher, a longtime Lucas collaborator and now an enthusiastic Guettel booster It's emotionally and intellectually satisfying at the same time, a difficult combination to pull off I always felt I had an affinity for Craig's writing and began to have one for Adam and his writing Not an uncommon occurrence in musical theater, and one that sets up "The Light in the Piazza," a widely anticipated and heartfelt new stage production now at the Goodman Theatre "It's not so much the writing â€â€? I'm a pretty quick music writer if I know what I am supposed to be doing," Guettel says "There's this beautiful difference between the creative and the interpretive," Sher says "I was buoyed up by it in a way that I rarely am by theater music because most of it is so umpah-umpah, umpah-umpah-pah "I found it so heart-wrenching," Lucas recalls Mary Rodgers' recommendation? "The Light in the Piazza," a 65-page novella by Elizabeth Spencer, first published in The New Yorker Then Craig Lucas, author of "Prelude to a Kiss" and the screenplay for "Longtime Companion," entered the picture No decision will be made until then, but representatives from various nonprofit theaters in New York have arrived for a look The musical also examines the volatile marriage of Fabrizio's libidinous brother and his angry wife as well as the young man's father, Senor Naccarelli, and his loyal helpmate " Guettel and Lucas methodically worked on the project, first at a cattle ranch run by the Ucross Foundation in northeastern Wyoming and then in 2002 at the Sundance Theatre Lab in Utah org A small yet carefully realized production opened last summer at Seattle's Intiman Theatre, where Lucas is an associate artistic director " Lucas provided what Guettel calls "the breakthrough" in completing the piece, reminding the composer that "The Light in the Piazza" is not only a love story but a comedy of manners, too "</p > Guettel's music is anything but "In Adam's case, whether it's the folk-country flavor of `Floyd Collins,' the gospel-pop world of `Myths and Hymns' or the operatic intensity of `The Light in the Piazza,' he seems to practically immerse himself in a musical style and then subtly, triumphantly, make it his own |
