The final two Met "Toscas" are next Wednesday and Saturday nights Then, in his final duet with Vaness, he seemed dangerously close to running out of steam To his credit, he faced them bravely throughout the night, but they rarely turned out well Pavarotti exhausted himself on the opening phrase and was barely audible during the remainder of the number " But the two patched things up, and Pavarotti clearly wanted to take proper leave of the world's leading opera house, where he had sung 373 performances of 20 roles since his debut in 1968 Several times he strayed from the tempo and rushed ahead of the orchestra, despite the extreme attentiveness of Met artistic director James Levine in the pit Besides proving an ideal support for Pavarotti, Vaness brought some sensitive singing and a dramatic flair to the character of Tosca, though her own upper register is no longer rock-solid Few would have predicted two years ago that the beloved tenor, now 68, would be back on the Met stage Saturday night for the first of three farewell performances in Puccini's "Tosca But the higher notes were frayed and wobbly Awaiting execution alone on the ramparts of Castel Sant'Angelo, he launches into the aria, "E lucevan le stelle" ("And the stars would be shining") Pavarotti Turns in Honorable Performance Mar 7, 3:08 PM EST Determined to end his great career with dignity, Luciano Pavarotti returned to the Metropolitan Opera one last time, his body and voice betraying the frailties of age, but his spirit gloriously intact His appearance in Act II is marked by a brief outburst, "Vittoria!" in which he defies tyranny just before he is dragged away by the henchman of Scarpia, chief of the secret police The feeling was mutual The cheering brought a sly smile to his bearded face as he walked slowly, and haltingly, across the lavish Franco Zeffirelli stage set, representing a Roman church in the year 1800 When Tosca, played by soprano Carol Vaness, appeared for their love duet, he leaned heavily on her for support â€â€? literally, as a shoulder to rest on, and vocally, letting her bright, penetrating sound carry over his and mask any unsteadiness on his part His ebullient personality and exciting high notes, so familiar from recordings, TV appearances and "Three Tenors" concerts, have brought him a popularity unequaled among modern opera stars, but Pavarotti always asked to be taken seriously as an artist as well " It was in May 2002 that Joseph Volpe, the Met's general manager, told a disappointed audience that Pavarotti had canceled what was to be his farewell because of illness and had refused to come on stage to speak to his fans Act III brings the big moment for Cavaradossi Sad to say, unlike his last appearance at the Met in Verdi's "Aida" in January 2001, Pavarotti did not grow stronger as the night wore on com At the conclusion of Saturday's performance, Pavarotti took his solo bows, extended his arms to the audience of more than 3,800 fans, most of them standing by this time, and beamed with love and gratitude lucianopavarotti metopera Yet he carried on and even brought unusual poignancy to his character's last moments By far the best performance of the night was by bass Samuel Ramey, whose portrayal of the sadistic Scarpia was chillingly intense â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? On the Net: http://www org http://www His first aria, "Recondita armonia" ("What subtle harmony"), showed that he still possesses the distinctive Pavarotti sound â€â€? a burnished, tightly focused tone â€â€? up to about the middle of his register Singing the role of the painter Mario Cavaradossi, Pavarotti quickly put on a blue smock and seated himself on a stool in front of his easel â€â€? one of many resting places where he took refuge during the course of the evening Volpe said he had scolded the tenor, telling him, "This is a hell of a way to end this beautiful career of yours On Saturday, Pavarotti's entrance, just minutes into Act I, was greeted by thunderous applause Pavarotti, seated at the jailer's desk and sipping from a handy glass of water, gave it his best, but he mainly brought back memories of how once his glorious tenor had effortlessly caressed each note Relaxed and even playful, he beamed throughout much of the scene as if delighted to be back, and at one point flicked paint playfully in the face of bass Paul Plishka, portraying the fussy sacristan This Cavaradossi clearly knew he was about to die, despite Tosca's naive assurances that his execution was merely being staged and they would soon run off together After that Pavarotti plans farewell concerts around the world (like one he gave a week ago at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas) before retiring completely in 2005 While that doesn't make him happy, he understands Music Choice has to be aggressive "Every company is trying to develop products that make them feel like they have control The service is only being test-marketed this summer in Iowa, Illinois and Pennsylvania, with no firm plan for a national rollout The one thing not offered in one place is variety And, as yet, Music Choice only has the capability to offer it to cable customers On screen is a graphic that identifies the song, artist and CD from which it originates So Music Choice shifted to a more traditional TV business model, where cable or satellite systems pay a licensing fee to the company, and provide the channels to customers as part of basic service The individual channels program a continuous stream of music, in formats set according to taste: rap, metal, jazz, blues, opera, gospel, show tunes, etc "It did well, but the model broke down very quickly," explained David Del Beccaro, the company's president Today, it's available in nearly 30 million homes, more than one-quarter of the nation's 107 million homes with television That's where "My Music Choice" comes in Music junkies loved it, but the service quickly hit a ceiling in terms of people willing to pay the monthly fee for something akin to radio, which they get for free "If we don't offer this product, someone else will com/ "You can't deny technology," Williams said This summer, the company is introducing "My Music Choice," an interactive option that essentially lets listeners create their own channels tailored to their tastes Even the popular genres are cut into narrow stylistic slivers Although Music Choice has what is essentially a Top 40 station (called "Hit List"), its strength is its depth "People want what they want when they want it," Williams said Williams is a DJ, and he lives for turning people on to great new music The new service will allow viewers to create their own channels according to taste He shouldn't worry too much In other words, they can bypass Williams' work At this point, every record company knows who we are It's essentially radio, minus the annoyances and local flavor, flowing through the television set Music Choice has no disc jockeys (except occasionally on the rap station), no commercials As programming director for Music Choice, he's ultimately responsible for deciding which songs are played on 45 channels of satellite and digital cable Customers paid $10 a month for the music " While Music Choice has been around for more than a decade, it is slowly seeping into public consciousness "It's a huge difference," Del Beccaro said It sounds good, but few listeners had the patience for it The 11 million satellite customers who get Music Choice are out of luck He has a dream job "When we were in four or 10 million homes, we would run into a lot of people who didn't know we were around It's the same challenge that satellite radio faces today There's no station where an adventurous listener can hear, for example, a bluegrass song followed by a rap or jazz cut or hard rocker And as more cable systems go digital â€â€? adding the capacity for many more channels â€â€? Music Choice often becomes part of the mix Most of the channels aren't repetitive, and can play several songs from an album instead of just one hit " Williams, with 15 years in the music business, doesn't like seeing his role reduced by "My Music Choice Music Choice airs the occasional concert; Fleetwood Mac and the Roots have given exclusive performances in recent months " "My parents didn't send me to school all those years for nothing," he said There are six separate rock stations, from soft to metal "Whenever we did mixed formats, the listeners would go away," Del Beccaro said musicchoice Direct TV customers get it A listener can program 10 percent bluegrass, 20 percent rap and 50 percent metal, if they want â€â€? or any other permutation Music Choice has begun taking in advertisers, whose messages are displayed onscreen, not in audio commercials For the most part, people use it passively, as background music when they vacuum the house, have a party or read a book In the past year alone, Music Choice added seven million new homes â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? On the Net: http://www Music Choice is also close to an agreement that will let viewers use their service, through its Web site, to buy and download music " So do many artists, judging by the increasingly cluttered wall at the company's Manhattan office Music Choice began in 1991 as a pay service on a handful of cable systems Musicians who stop for a visit are asked to add their autographs to the wall There's one channel for popular country chart hits, another for classic country artists, another for Americana and another for bluegrass TV Channels Compete As Radio Alternative Jun 1, 12:32 PM EST NEW YORK (AP) â€â€? Forgive Damon Williams if he has a difficult time mustering enthusiasm for his company's latest product |
