The dismal new revival of Luigi Pirandello's "Right You Are" by the National Actors Theatre could set back the play's reputation in New York for years to come The actors sit like contestants on a game show â€â€? lined up on chairs as they ponder "What do we know about other people?" A miscast Tony Randall, the company's founder and artistic director, portrays the play's conscience, an irritating observer who keeps chiding the squabbling townspeople into questioning just what exactly is reality Style is what's mostly missing here, with the actors scrambling just to articulate Pirandello's convoluted yet entertaining arguments Another problem is the theater space itself The production, on view at the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts at Pace University, is remarkably strenuous and unfunny, stranding more than a dozen actors who appear vaguely embarrassed by the proceedings It's the audience, though, that's most likely to be driven bonkers by this slow-moving yet shrill production, directed with a heavy hand by Fabrizio Melano "Right You Are" requires a certain style and grace to carry off its philosophical musings It asks: How do we know who is telling the truth? In this case, what is the real story behind a mysterious family â€â€? husband, wife and mother-in-law who have moved to a small provincial Italian city? The town gossips want to know, and they hear from both the son and the mother-in-law, each claiming the other to be mad She gives a lovely, poised performance, in contrast to the noisy emoting from other members of the cast Only Maria Tucci as the dignified mother-in-law manages to get something extra out of the text Coarseness runs rampant In the end, though, the evening is a depressing experience, a missed opportunity to let audiences get reacquainted with a play all too infrequently done in New York This version, which shortens its well-known title â€â€? "Right You Are, If You Think You Are" â€â€? even sinks adapter Eric Bentley's sturdy, usually foolproof translation The play is a classic conundrum about perception The wide stage at the Schimmel Center is a gargantuan playing area that set designer James Noone has filled with a chilly, masoleum-like living room, decorated in what can only be described as Mussolini chic (the play has been transposed to 1930s fascist Italy) AP: 'Right You Are' Ends Up All Wrong Dec 7, 11:18 PM EST "Right You Are" â€â€? no, you're not That panache was present last summer in London in another adaptation of the play â€â€? awkwardly retitled "Absolutely! (Perhaps)" â€â€? and starring the wonderful Joan Plowright "Koba the Dread" makes a withering attack on Western leftists, accusing them of ignoring the crimes of Stalin's Soviet dictatorship "What did you imagine would happen if you elected to write on such a Himalayan topic, and then pygmified it by addressing so much of it to me?" Novelist Martin Amis and journalist Christopher Hitchens used to be the best of friends But now the two writers, Oxford contemporaries who started their careers together on British magazines in the 1970s, are engaged in a genteel battle over a historical atrocity " Hitchens is an iconoclast whose targets have included Mother Teresa, and he is back in the news for his highly public falling out with the left over how to deal with Iraq and terrorism The feud was sparked by the latest book from Amis, a respected novelist and essayist " While Amis novels such as "London Fields" and "Money" and his memoir "Experience" are widely admired, Amis is a writer whom many in Britain love to hate Last month he gave up his 20-year-old column in the left-wing "Nation," saying the weekly had become "the echo chamber of those who truly believe that John Ashcroft is a greater menace than Osama bin Laden He juxtaposes Soviet mass murder with the death of his sister to counter the infamous remark attributed to Stalin that one death is a tragedy, a million deaths a statistic Amis addresses Hitchens ironically as "Comrade Hitchens" and berates him for condoning the "dead freedom, lies and violence" of the Soviet Union In the Independent newspaper last month, writer Boyd Tonkin mused that Amis had become a "spite-conductor for British culture "I find myself embarrassed almost every day at the thought of an actual gulag survivor reading this "In the general consciousness the Russian dead sleep on," Amis writes "Everybody knows of the 6 million of the Holocaust What has sparked the most criticism, though, is Amis's bold â€â€? some say reckless â€â€? mixing of the personal and the political " He has also just published "Why Orwell Matters," a paean to the intellectual integrity of the late author of "Animal Farm" and "1984 " " Amis and Hitchens insist their friendship is unimpaired " Amis argues that Western intellectuals were reluctant to condemn communism even when it was clear that "Koba" â€â€? Stalin's childhood nickname â€â€? was responsible for the deaths of 20 million people Hitchens responded with his own open letter, accusing Amis of making the "unpardonable assumption" that the left did not condemn Stalin Nobody knows of the 6 million of the Terror-Famine While everyone recognizes the Nazi genocide, he says, Stalin's terror remains shrouded in a disgraceful silence A blend of history and personal memoir, the book has sharply divided readers and reviewers And in one much-cited passage he says the nighttime screams of his infant daughter "would not have been out of place in the deepest cellars of the Butyrki Prison in Moscow during the Great Terror Booklist deemed it "absolutely riveting In the past he has been berated for leaving his first wife for writer Isabel Fonseca, for ditching his agent, even for paying $30,000 to have his teeth fixed " Amis ends the book with open letters to his father, the late novelist Kingsley Amis â€â€? a longtime member of the Communist Party who later turned to the right â€â€? and to former colleague and friend Hitchens, the British left-wing author and columnist Fought through open letters full of careful courtesy and acid sarcasm, the debate between "Dearest Martin" and "Comrade Hitchens" about the crimes of Josef Stalin â€â€? and the West's reaction to them â€â€? has riveted Britain's literati " Critics of the book have responded that the crimes of Stalin are well known, and were condemned by many on the left " Anne Applebaum, author of a forthcoming book on the Soviet gulags, called it "a poorly conceived, improbably hysterical diatribe |
