She's been a contributing editor to Parenting magazine for 15 years " Mitchard had a dream that led to "Deep End," which she wrote after her first husband died She later worked for The Capital Times in Madison, Wis Mitchard wouldn't give much more away about the story except to say that the couple must gather their family to face a startling revelation Mitchard won rave reviews for "Deep End of the Ocean" for her writing and storytelling abilities, but her three fiction books since have been criticized and praised " She writes every day on her laptop in her bedroom "On the other hand, that book meant a great deal to a great many people All of the books have had some emotional effect on some people The couple won Stories Mitchard writes tend to come true in real life "While this is a compelling novel â€â€? timing and momentum are Mitchard's strengths â€â€? it's not as fully realized as 'The Deep End of the Ocean,' and rarely rises above its own sentimental constraints to any greater wisdom," The Boston Globe said about "The Most Wanted Besides her novels, she's written a children's novel and text for three picture books for children "It's weird isn't it? It's like if I write it, it happens," she says It was so worth the price of admission She says she was far enough removed from widowhood to write "without it being searing Five weeks later, they were married She's also writing two screenplays with screenwriter John Roach, a TV producer and writer who co-wrote David Lynch's "The Straight Story," a 1999 film about a 73-year-old man who drives his mower cross country to visit his estranged brother Mitchard has six children between the ages of 4 and 27 "In my family, you know, telling a story " The room is filled with treasures, from photos of her family and friends to the wood molding of the windows, made from the cherry trees surrounding her seven bedroom Tudor, which sits on 80 acres of land Her father was a plumber and her mother was an avid reader and told wonderful stories "I wanted to do all these things because I think it would be such a giggle," Mitchard says A dream also led to "The Most Wanted," which came out in 1998 She's been nationally syndicated by Tribune Media for five years , and the Sentinel Real Life Mirrors Fiction for Mitchard Jun 18, 2:36 PM EST Jacquelyn Mitchard leans against two pillows on her unmade king-size bed, its cream colored sheets visible under a light green and peach comforter It's where she goes each day with her lap top to craft the stories that shape her novels as well as her syndicated column, "The Rest of Us After graduating, she worked as a teacher and waitress before landing a job at the Pioneer Press in suburban Chicago " During her promotion tour in New Jersey, a woman whose husband died in the Sept And in "Theory of Relativity," published in 2001 and inspired by a real-life court case in Milwaukee, two families are torn apart in a custody battle over a baby girl whose parents died in a car crash "It was the fact that she felt that way as a result of reading something I'd written 1 " Mitchard was a columnist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, struggling to raise three young children and a high schooler on her own after her first husband died from cancer, when Winfrey selected the writer's first novel, "Deep End of the Ocean," for her book club, in 1996 "It wasn't how her husband died that was so moving," Mitchard says, choking back tears "I'm grateful to her with all my heart," Mitchard says about Winfrey The book is about a young couple whose car breaks down in Boston on their anniversary " The day before, she finished a 23-city tour to promote her latest book, "Twelve Times Blessed Her weekly newspaper column, "The Rest of Us," has appeared in the Sentinel for 20 years became the way you got attention," Mitchard says That was five years ago In 1997, the columns were put together in a book, "The Rest of Us 14 to No 11 terrorist attacks told Mitchard that when she read "Twelve Times Blessed," about a widow who remarries, she realized she could still have a life One will be released in October 2004 and the others are still being edited and illustrated In "The Most Wanted," which came out in 1998, she writes about a single lawyer who takes on the cause of a pregnant teen and falls in love with a younger carpenter working on her house Naturally, Mitchard has concerns about the events in her fifth novel, "Christmas, Present," which comes out Nov 1 on The New York Times list of best sellers The book, which sold more than 3 million copies, was later made into a movie, starring Michelle Pfeiffer Four were adopted; the oldest is Mitchard's stepdaughter from her first marriage After the book was published, Mitchard hired Brent, a carpenter, to put some tile in at her house It really affected the author " Mitchard was born and raised in Chicago to parents who were high school drop outs But within a week of Winfrey's announcement, there were 640,000 copies in print and the book shot from No Out back is a stable where she keeps the four horses she calls her "girls She studied biology at the University of Illinois and later switched to American literature and finished at Rockford College There are many stories she'd still like to weave â€â€? a historical novel, a ghost story and a survival adventure story with all women Characters and stories in Mitchard's books often are taken from her life The book, about a Midwestern family whose child disappears, had a first printing of 100,000 â€â€? impressive for any first-time author For example, "Twelve Times Blessed" is about a middle-aged widow who marries a man 12 years her junior after a brief courtship " Now, it's time to relax and regroup for Mitchard, who attributes much of her success to Oprah Winfrey, whom she calls her "fairy godmother Relaxed in jeans and a gray, V-neck sweater, she is entertaining a visitor in her bedroom, which also serves as her office "I always write and always read and I always live and through living come the stories," she says " "I wanted to write about the experience of widowhood and remarriage but I didn't want to write my experience of it," says Mitchard, 49, who is married to Chris Brent, 37 While writing the book, the birth father of a baby daughter adopted by Mitchard and Brent challenged custody The dialogue is a bit wordy for the screen, and the action â€â€? only talking, really â€â€? takes place almost exclusively in a New York apartment PG â€â€? Parental guidance suggested "The Guys" tells the story of Joan â€â€? a New York journalist and working mom â€â€? who confronts her own anguish through an unusual working relationship with a fire captain, Nick, who has lost most of his men The film is set on Sept The Flea's founder, Jim Simpson, has now turned Nelson's play into a film starring his wife, Sigourney Weaver, and Anthony LaPaglia Others felt the urge to reach out, especially to strangers who suddenly had become partners in tragedy " Patrick was a leader, who also found time to make a Waldorf salad for his church picnic 21, 2001, when the shock and horror have had a little time to sink in "He was chomping at the bit Bernie and Dave were the jokesters LaPaglia is just as good, capturing perfectly the agony of this man who loves his job and loved his men, and deeply wants to find the words to do them justice Nick is a man of little words, overcome with grief For Jimmy, a rookie, Sept "The Guys," a Focus Features release, is rated PG for thematic elements and brief language She asks Nick to describe the men, one by one, whom he must eulogize All ages admitted Nick needs to write eulogies for eight of his men "The Guys" was written, originally as a play, to give voice to some of those feelings Even more striking is the fact that we never see the men who are the main subject of all the talk PG-13 â€â€? Special parental guidance strongly suggested for children under 13 In the scene when Nick finally delivers his eulogy, the church is filled not with extras but with firefighters, police officers and real family members of those who died 85 min Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian Three stars out of four Eventually, anecdotes and snippets of life come pouring out Weaver is absolutely believable as a writer seeking to achieve some kind of solace using her talent Some material may be inappropriate for young children The movie doesn't need them He doesn't know where to start 11 "was his first big fire," Nick tells Joan </p > For some, staying quiet and withdrawn was the way to cope R â€â€? Restricted Some material may not be suitable for children It's surprisingly effective Joan finds a way to weave them into an eloquent whole Initially, Nick and Joan have problems meshing So he comes to Joan for help Her best moment in the film comes when she's alone, calling out plaintively for time to reverse itself: for the planes to withdraw from their fiery collision with the twin towers, to fly back where they came from and land safely; for the fire trucks to drive back to the station houses, firefighters safely aboard Anne Nelson, who'd never written a play before, wove together her own experiences into a piece for the small Flea Theater, just blocks from ground zero 11 attacks, many New Yorkers walked around in a daze, trying to make sense of the incomprehensible Post-9-11, their relationship somehow makes sense â€â€?â€â€? Motion Picture Association of America rating definitions: G â€â€? General audiences For Joan, words are her tools As Joan tells Nick, nothing in the pre-9-11 world would ever have brought them together At the end of the film, you realize there have been no images of the twin towers crumbling, of the planes crashing in fireballs â€â€? none of those pictures that we all know too well Many directors would have provided flashbacks of these firefighters, but Simpson doesn't, forcing the audience to do some work of its own At the Movies: 'The Guys' Apr 4, 6:21 AM EST In the numbing days following the Sept NC-17 â€â€? No one under 17 admitted It's easy to see this film originally was a play It manages to capture the event in a quiet, mournful and ultimately uplifting way |
