Fox to Debut New Series Across Calendar
May 21, 7:09 AM EST

Fox will kick off new series in June, August, November and January, but none during the traditional September start of a new TV season

Fox's unconventional announcement on Thursday shows how serious it is about a year-round scheduling strategy

â€â€?"Quintuplets," starting June 16, stars Andy Richter as the father of 15-year-old quints It is going to require some patience on our part

Five new series will debut next month, the same time Fox's rivals essentially shut down for reruns Mark Burnett, who is producing a boxing reality series for NBC, has grumbled about Fox nicking his idea with "The Next Great Champ," which has Oscar De La Hoya trying to spy boxing talent

The network is banking on "Kevin Hill," which features Diggs as a hotshot New York lawyer whose life changes when his cousin dies and leaves him with his 6-month-old daughter

Meanwhile, UPN â€â€? the last of six broadcast networks to unveil new schedules to advertisers this week â€â€? will have a new drama in the fall with Taye Diggs portraying a lawyer who inherits a baby

Another new drama about a teenage girl in a class-conscious town, "Veronica Mars," looks much like a signature series on the WB, the youth-obsessed network that is UPN's main rival

UPN has been on an upswing since CBS' management team began overseeing it two years ago

One of Fox's most critically acclaimed shows, "Arrested Development," was renewed despite poor ratings It premieres in January

â€â€?"The Inside," about a high school student working as an undercover federal agent

â€â€?"Related By Family," a January comedy about teenagers who work and hang out at the mall food court "

In November, Fox will premiere "House," described as a medical mystery series

Three new reality series also will premiere in November, all of them familiar to fans of the genre Starts in January At least "Malcolm" stays on the same night

â€â€?"Athens," a drama from the creator of "The O

â€â€?"North Shore," a drama focusing on the 20-something employees at a luxury hotel in Hawaii, starts June 14 " moves to Thursday nights in November, and "24" will start its fourth year in January on Mondays

Virgin founder Richard Branson joins Donald Trump and Mark Cuban as rich guys looking to give away money on TV and "The Partner" is reminiscent of "The Apprentice" in matching a team of Ivy Leaguers against street-smart lawyers for a job in a major firm " Next summer, he'll start making new episodes of "Family Guy," a cartoon Fox canceled then was stunned to see it become enormously popular on DVD

â€â€?"Jonny Zero," starting in January, is about a New Yorker fresh out of prison torn between returning to his old life or joining the FBI

"We have modest expectations about changing a 50-year history of the way television is done UPN has renewed "Star Trek: Enterprise," a franchise thought to be on the edge for cancellation, but moved it to Fridays The network says this reflects the way people follow television today, but it's also done out of necessity: Fox series have gotten off to a terrible start the past two years because its schedule is pre-empted for baseball in October C

"We've turned an important corner," said UPN chief Dawn Ostroff

Fox will also be trying to break a dubious streak: for the past few years, it has had at least one series announced in May that never made it on the air With Tyra Banks and "America's Top Model," it has a genuine hit that reaches its target audience of 18-to-34-year-olds, particularly women

"Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane will also produce a new cartoon, "American Dad "

On the viewers' part, too ," about the battles between rich outsiders and townies in a New England college town

"Model" will shift from Tuesday to Wednesday night in the fall, with a weekly rerun airing on Fridays Rap stars Method Man and Redman will star in a comedy, and Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie hit the road for the second season of "The Simple Life

With "The Parkers" retiring, UPN is adding "Second Time Around," about a couple getting married for the second time, to its Monday lineup of comedies with largely black casts

â€â€?"The Casino," a Burnett-produced series about the real-life dramas behind the scenes at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas

Two of Fox's most popular comedies â€â€? "The Bernie Mac Show" and "Malcolm in the Middle" â€â€? were given three different time slots

Three dramas and three comedies will premiere in January, including a sketch comedy show inspired by "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-in" with "Frasier" star Kelsey Grammer Premieres June 14

Other new Fox shows:

â€â€?"The Jury," a courtroom drama produced by Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana, which debuts June 8

The network also has a home renovation competition set for August

Two of its most popular dramas will be packing bags: "The O

The network released three separate schedules â€â€? one for June, another for November and a third for January

"This is not an overnight thing," said Gail Berman, Fox entertainment president C

"It's a tongue-in-cheek jive at this idea that we're committing this crime against jazz by playing something that's groove," he said and then what is raw and completely spontaneous and immediate," he said

He has won acclaim playing with many of the biggest jazz talents, including veteran drummer Roy Haynes, pianist Chick Corea and trumpeter Roy Hargrove

He played off and on with Yahel for the next three years, but remained devoted to leading his acoustic quartet, with which he recorded "Beyond" in 2000 and "Passages of Time" in 2001 Obviously, I don't agree with that

Redman says he's only just begun experimenting, and will probably cut another record of electric music It's one foot in my old world and one little pinky toe into the new world

'"Elastic' is a transitional record

While the publicity has catapulted his CDs to the top of Billboard's jazz charts, it has at times brought him criticism for not cultivating a more traditional style His attitude is 'Surprise me,'" said 30-year-old Yahel, who switches fluently among the Hammond B-3 organ, Fender Rhodes and Hohner Clavinet, and has toured with Maceo Parker â€â€? James Brown's saxophonist for two decades

"I've noticed that certain people in the jazz community are saying 'He's trying to reach a wider audience there was no way this music was going to get played on the radio ' That's the euphemism for 'He's trying to sell out,'" he said in an interview before a recent concert in Tokyo

Last year, Redman disbanded his quartet and joined Yahel and Blade in a group they called Yaya3

"Josh doesn't set limits for anyone "But when people hear a groove, a backbeat, they think that's not jazz Redman's 'Elastic' Stretches Boundaries
Mar 12, 12:04 PM EST

Since rising to stardom in the early 1990s, tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman's music has run the gamut of genres His side projects include stints with pop artists as diverse as DJ Logic, the Rolling Stones, the Dave Matthews Band and the Roots Redman, who wrote it based on the rhythm changes of Thelonious Monk's "Evidence," wanted the tune to have a double meaning

It took Redman years to commit to the project

Redman denies he's trying to turn rock listeners on to jazz , to work as the San Francisco Jazz Spring Season's artistic director, says it doesn't worry him that a few critics have branded his latest work "anti-jazz contract com

"It's definitely a work in progress," he said of his latest CD, "Elastic

"In the end, it's about striking that balance between what is crafted, what is orchestrated "

For a musician used to brisk-selling albums and the adulation of fans and music critics alike, it's also a risky venture "Had I wanted to do that I would have created a different kind of music because I knew "

A couple of months later, they returned to record "Elastic

"We were becoming self-indulgent and the music was becoming boring," he said, adding that they have since worked out the kinks

Redman often has been held up as the poster boy for the acoustic jazz renaissance "

Many of the tracks on "Elastic" â€â€? 11 written by Redman and one by Yahel â€â€? hint at Redman's lifelong interest in rock and funk

The throbbing "Jazz Crimes," for instance, has a funk rhythm and a melody in G-flat â€â€? rare for a funk tune

His first chance to play with Yahel came in 1998, when Yahel invited him to a New York gig that guitarist Peter Bernstein couldn't make Now, he's out to blend those styles into something more personal "If the music speaks and it's powerful, it has soul and it has spirit, and it has a natural organic feeling, then the process by which that was arrived at is in a sense irrelevant because you can never replicate the sound of live interaction " Redman says he edited passages and dubbed in harmonizing saxophone scales â€â€? something he was initially reluctant to do â€â€? altering about 10 percent of the trio's live performance The connection, Redman says, was instant "

Redman, who recently returned to his hometown of Berkeley, Calif During a tour of the United States and Europe last autumn, the band's attempt to balance improvisation with funk elements broke down

With his new trio (organist Sam Yahel and drummer Brian Blade), the 33-year-old Redman has melded jazz improvisation with swing, funk and R&B rhythms in an approach that is reminiscent of the fusion movement of the 1970s Their self-titled album, mostly of Yahel's originals, came out last June

After graduating from Harvard University in 1991, he went on that year to win the coveted Thelonius Monk Institute Competition for saxophonists â€â€? and a Warner Bros joshuaredman "

Yahel, one of the most sought-after young organists, says Redman's restless exploration drives the trio

At times, Redman concedes, the trio has taken that adventurousness too far Maybe, on the next one, I'll want to have a full foot in the new world, or both feet "

"In many ways, this music is more complex than other music I've created," Redman said
