Prosecutors are trying to determine whether Limbaugh visited several doctors to illegally receive duplicate prescriptions of controlled narcotics Also Friday, the state's 4th District Court of Appeal in West Palm Beach gave prosecutors 15 days to respond to Limbaugh's appeal of a Palm Beach County judge's order allowing them to review his medical records, which remain sealed Limbaugh's attorney, Roy Black, contends that prosecutors violated Limbaugh's privacy rights when they seized the medical records late last year by using search warrants, rather than first notifying Limbaugh and giving him a chance to challenge the seizure Krischer's office began investigating more than a year ago after Limbaugh's former maid told them she sold Limbaugh "large quantities of hydrocodone, Oxycontin and other pharmaceutical drugs" for years â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? In assembling the current exhibition, co-curators Douglas Druick and Gloria Groom chose works to illustrate not only marine painting, but also something nearly as fluid and color-shifting as the sea itself: the history of Western painting in the turbulent 19th century But the beach scenes he did after taking a painting trip with the younger Whistler turn light and almost transparent, partly echoing Whistler's Japanese-influenced style In 1867, three years after Manet's revolutionary painting, Monet painted his "Green Wave," which was a break with his own previous style and clearly inspired by Manet's early seascapes " For the show, Druick and Groom assembled 40 Manet sea-related oil paintings from museums and private collections worldwide, plus some of his preliminary sketches and watercolors They also demonstrate how younger artists learn from their elders, as well as how the fresh vision of the young can sometimes reopen older eyes Their central figure is Edouard Manet (1832-1883), the pivotal French painter who was not only a master of classical style, but also known as "the father of impressionism" and even "the first modern artist The technique was totally unlike the meticulous brushwork of Manet's famous nudes and portraits, and the artist kept returning to it â€â€? and to the sea â€â€? on and off for the rest of his life But the most familiar works on view are probably the paintings of Manet's younger contemporaries: impressionists Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir and Berthe Morisot, plus Manet's American friend, James McNeill Whistler Manet Seascapes Exhibit Opens in Chicago Oct 20, 12:56 PM EST What color is the sea? What does a breaking wave really look like? Such questions are likely to occur to visitors seeing "Manet and the Sea," a major new exhibition of 19th-century seascapes that opened Monday at the Art Institute of Chicago By juxtaposing works by different painters, the curators show how opposing artistic schools can cross-pollinate and flow into one another artic 15-May 31, 2004, and at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from June 18-Sept They are believed to have influenced many of the artists represented in the show Manet didn't witness the battle, but he drew on newspaper accounts to paint his version of the scene within a month of the fight For example, the waves painted by Courbet in his prime are massive, solid-looking forms done in heavy layers of paint And he positioned the warring ships in the background, making the sea water that filled most of the canvas his true subject Similarly, the influence of Manet on Monet â€â€? and vice versa â€â€? has been much debated by art historians â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? "Manet and the Sea" runs in Chicago through Jan 19 Druick and Groom said that was one reason they decided to assemble the show of seascapes To illustrate his transitional nature, Druick and Groom brought in nearly 60 more works by 15 other painters But Manet's picture was a break with traditional marine battle painting On side walls in some of the gallery rooms are examples of the Japanese woodblocks that were just beginning to be known in Europe in Manet's day They didn't stop with Manet That water was painted in broad, loose brushstrokes, suggesting â€â€? rather than imitating â€â€? the waves and the light playing on their surface But Manet and Monet both painted the sea Monet was a master of landscapes, and Manet didn't do landscapes On June 19, 1864, a Union ironclad, the "Kearsarge," sank the Confederate raider "Alabama" near the beach at Cherbourg, on the English Channel Some are 17th- and 18th-century Dutch works Manet may have encountered at the Louvre in his youth Many representational artists contend that seascapes are the most challenging paintings 26, 2004 And that painting had an unlikely origin â€â€? a battle of the American Civil War fought off the coast of France edu He painted it as if from above, bringing the horizon up nearly to the top of the composition It stops at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Feb Oddly, Manet, who considered a naval career and made a voyage to Brazil at age 16, didn't do his first sea painting until he was 32 Druick and Groom noted in introductory remarks before a preview of the exhibition that this debate is complicated by the fact that Manet is known for his portraits and human figures, which Monet rarely painted â€â€?â€â€?â€â€?
