" These days Corbett plays another winning hand as the star of "Lucky," a dramedy about Michael "Lucky" Linkletter, a former poker champ who has two overpowering urges: to keep gambling and to quit "Easiest thing in the world," he says, smiling He played Chris Stevens, the New Agey disc jockey on "Northern Exposure " He prefers another L-word: "lazy "You know how hotel wastepaper baskets are: They're kinda small," notes Corbett You buy into the moment you're creating " But not until after he had tossed the script into the trash can and watched it ricochet out â€â€? not once but twice "You've never seen anyone more serious than me when we're on the set," he declares A West Virginia native, he got into acting after an on-the-job injury at a California steel plant And, not for the first time, Corbett wonders why he should do interviews instead of letting the show speak for itself Then in 1990 he was ready to put acting on hold and relocate to Seattle, where he had an offer to house-sit on nearby Bainbridge Island "Here's Lucky," he says, designating an empty space to his left, and then, pointing over to the right, he says, "Here's Corbett â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? On the Net: www "Lucky" might be TV's first addiction comedy series, and Corbett is perfect as its cards-bedeviled hero "I'm 41 years old, I'm single, I own my own house, I don't have any kids," he says "But I haven't been home in seven months," he says, "and I don't have a gardener " But two weeks before going, he landed his career-launching role on CBS' quirky drama "Northern Exposure," which, although set in mythical Cicely, Alaska, would be shot in the Seattle area His career change led to several years scuffling for roles Corbett still owns the house he bought there early in its run "I was 28 and nothing had happened," he explains, "and I knew I'd love Seattle On the other hand, he is breezily dismissive of acting itself A few minutes earlier, he glided into this mid-Manhattan restaurant, all 6 feet 5 inches of him, exhibiting a grin, a pinstriped suit and easy banter I want to be the man behind the curtain And with Corbett's smooth move into this latest tasty project, the word now inevitably tied to him is "lucky No wonder he stays fancy-free m com â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? Then you say hello in the most natural, real way you can Premiering on FX, home of the cop drama "The Shield," "Lucky" has all the signs of a similarly groundbreaking series fxnetwork " And, of course, he was the non-Greek groom in the megahit film "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 5 million viewers My grass must be THIS high!" Which brings the conversation to how Corbett got "Lucky "You memorize `He comes to the door and says hello " Not that Corbett is any shrinking violet "I was out having fun, having the best time, meeting the best people in the world!"
