"In rehearsals, Allen Payne asked, `What athlete is this based on?' I said, `Just think of Kobe Bryant,'" Harper said "It happens to athletes in general, entertainers in general," he told the Times He has all the endorsements " Bryant, who turns 25 later this month, was charged July 18 with felony sexual assault of a 19-year-old woman in Colorado Film Parallels Story of Kobe Bryant Aug 16, 6:34 AM EST Sometimes life really does imitate art "I was just amazed," Jennifer Harper, the film's writer and director, told the Los Angeles Times recently "Sometimes these are the things you have to go through if you have money, and the extent some people will go through to try and get it Even more remarkable, Harper said, is that Bryant was the model for the lead character, played by actor Allen Payne " That's who this character is Or the other way around The movie's title, "Playas Ball," refers to the party held during NBA All-Star week, which attracts professional athletes and others In the film, Payne plays Cedric Tinsley, a 27-year-old NBA superstar who is the subject of a paternity suit by a woman who threatens to accuse him of rape if he doesn't agree to an out-of-court settlement Davis, who financed it for less than $1 million through his Atlanta-based company, World Ain't Right Entertainment, said he made it to show how high-profile athletes can be exploited "We were calling each other like, `Can you believe the timing of this?'" The movie was the brainchild of Portland Trail Blazers center Dale Davis, who hopes to have it sold to a distributor before the upcoming NBA season A highly respected NBA star's life is turned upside down after a woman accuses him of rape: That's both the story of Kobe Bryant and the plot of an independent film that completed shooting last February, months before Bryant's real-life drama began "He's loved by everybody Ernest Crichlow's 1938 lithograph, ironically titled "Lovers," shows a young black woman trapped in her bedroom and sexually assaulted by a hooded Ku Klux Klansman The scenes range over affectionate portraits of family life in urban and rural settings, nightclub jazz and jitterbug dancing, biblical episodes and evangelistic prayer, workmen at construction sites and street scenes, wartime service by men in uniform and highly symbolic still-life studies "The images reflect the social and economic times of World War II and the Great Depression, particularly for African-Americans, and they also speak poignantly of the human dramas, large and small, that inflect all our daily lives," Metropolitan director Philippe de Montebello writes in the expansive and articulate catalog In the background is a dead tree with a noose, a reminder of the lynchings that blooded the South A merchant mariner in World War II, he went down with a ship in 1943 Lawrence's innovative 1943 "Pool Parlor," with flat, geometric shapes and bold colors in his modernist style, is a centerpiece of the exhibit, along with his 1942 Harlem street scene, "The Photographer," and "The Shoemaker" from 1945, all in watercolor and gouache Lucid wallboards illuminate the main themes Met Highlights Depression-Era Works Jan 29, 1:28 PM EST The Depression meant joblessness, bread lines and despair for millions of Americans, and no group suffered more than blacks Riveting prints by Robert Blackburn, Raymond Steth, Dox Thrash, William Henry Johnson, John Woodrow Wilson, Wilmer Angier Jennings, Norman Wilfred Lewis and Hale Woodruff highlight the artistically rich 16-year period between the Harlem Renaissance and the end of World War II Depicting scenes of everyday life and broader themes of poverty and discrimination, the exhibition is the Metropolitan's first in years to focus on the accomplishments of black artists of the era Delaney's 1940 oil on masonite, "Circle in the Square," showing a happy mix of people lounging at Washington Square in Lower Manhattan, and Jones' 1938 impressionist "Cauliflower and Pumpkin" oil on canvas are other masterpieces Several prints confront shocking themes Hills 1938 lithograph, "Newsboy," shows a youth in a rakish cap hawking newspapers in a stream of traffic, oblivious to cars, trucks and skyscrapers dwarfing him A New Deal agency, the Works Progress Administration, funded a variety of projects to create jobs for all Americans and to bootstrap the economy Some of their best paintings, drawings and prints are now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in "African-America Artists, 1929-1945," encompassing 75 works by 34 men and women Yet the deprivations of the 1930s also brought a flowering of painting and printmaking by black artists under federal programs to encourage public art But the primary focus is on the largely neglected print makers of the WPA who depicted the rich panorama of black American culture in Northern cities and Southern rural areas against the backdrop of racial intolerance and grinding poverty Realism predominates, but expressionist and naturalist influences also are apparent in stark portraits of life in the decades before civil rights: Rundown housing, a corner tavern, bleak back streets and a WPA soup kitchen, contrast with idyllic scenes of agrarian life and religious fervor in the South The collection includes watercolors and oil paintings by some of America's greatest artists of the 20th century, including Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Joseph Delaney, Lois Mailou Jones and Horace Pippin A sense of pride, optimism and a determination to succeed shines through in many of the works Steth's lithograph of a poor farm family in worship, "Heaven on a Mule," and Thrash's "Glory Be," showing a group praying in silhouette against the night sky, in the Carborundum technique he pioneered, are moving portrayals of deep Christian faith in the tough times Hill didn't live to fulfill his artistic talents The works are drawn from the museum's holdings and will be shown through May 4 Charles Wilbert White's stylized 1945 lithograph, "Hope for the Future," depicts a black mother gazing warily while cradling her robust infant in her outsized hands One of the WPA's programs subsidized creative artists, including highly talented blacks who gained access to community art schools, materials, galleries and regular salaries from art Carl G Bearden's 1945 watercolor and ink drawing "Golgotha," rendering the crucifixion of Christ in an angular, Picasso-esque style, is another renowned work on display Like Hill himself, who produced the print for the Harlem WPA, the newsboy is emblematic of ghetto kids who beat the odds and prevail in life |
