These scenes appear on a large gray rectangle that dominates a trendy if nondescript apartment that has a large fish tank â€â€? with real fish â€â€? in one corner With apologies to a famous lyric from Barbra Streisand's "Funny Girl": "People who videotape people are the most insecure people in the world They also provide for brief video appearances by such diverse actors as Craig Bierko, Michael Gaston, Swoosie Kurtz, Jenna Lamia, Gretchen Mol and Tom Noonan Maybe on Broadway, too Bierko is especially funny as a doctor who may have been flirting with Lissa but who recoils in horror when he learns that his actions are being recorded for posterity Kean suggests they videotape their own lives to keep themselves honest with each other And their relationship is unraveling Of course, they are also self-centered, neurotic and driven to talk endlessly about their problems Spending two hours with these models of self-absorption is enough to make you swear off unburdening yourself on best friends forever The evening ends with an emotional outburst by Lissa, a moment Margulies carries off quite effectively 'Intrigue' Offers Unique Therapy Session Jun 11, 8:41 PM EST Lissa and Kean are the most unbearable people off-Broadway Even their names grate Nobody wins They swim quite nicely Lissa, played by Julianna Margulies, is a therapist; Kean, portrayed by Benjamin Bratt, is a filmmaker Yet, her revelation doesn't come as much of a surprise The production makes extensive use of videotaping, which figures prominently in the plot This comedy-drama, which off-Broadway's MCC Theater has opened at the Acorn on Theatre Row, is not only wordy, it's gimmicky, too " Things go downhill from there In fact, it is the plot Unfortunately, Lissa and Kean get to drone on about their relationship â€â€? or lack thereof â€â€? for nearly two hours in "Intrigue With Faye," Kate Robin's therapy session masquerading as a play By the way, the "Faye" of the title is a woman Kean once had a fling with â€â€? and she is played on videotape by the delightful Mol During these verbal fisticuffs, we learn that Lissa videotapes sessions with her clients Both Margulies and Bratt are attractive, accomplished actors, but they have little luck injecting much life into these whining, humorless individuals " And those little interludes form the best part of the evening So they do The accusations turn "Intrigue With Faye" into a verbal tennis match as each tries to out-argue the other You know this because the first line of the play, spoken by Lissa to Kean, is "I hate you The fire, which lasted about 45 minutes, appears to have been caused by a short circuit in the fourth-floor administrative area of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina â€â€? the waterfront site of what was the most renowned library of the ancient world It had been an international intellectual center where scholars are thought to have produced the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament and edited Homer's works The Bibliotheca Alexandrina reopened later Sunday The new library contains about 240,000 books, a planetarium, conference hall, five research institutes, six galleries and three museums The fire was confined to the administrative area and no books were destroyed, said Khaled Azab, a library spokesman The ancient library, founded in about 295 B C Authorities evacuated the 11-story building and 29 people were taken to hospitals for treatment for smoke inhalation "Everybody is safe, thank God," said Leila Dewidar, head of the library's grants division Fire Mars Egypt's New Alexandria Library Mar 2, 11:17 AM EST A fire broke out Sunday in the sleek, new Alexandria library, sending thick smoke swirling through the building that opened to international fanfare in October by Ptolemy I Soter, burned in the fourth century Egypt built the $230 million library, on Alexandria's renovated seaside promenade, with financial and other assistance from around the world |
