Born May 17, 1924 in the then-Polish city of Kovle, now part of Ukraine, Dejmek was known for his political productions, most notably the 1968 production of "Dziady," or "Forefathers Following the March 1968 events, Dejmek quit the communist party Dejmek was admitted to a Warsaw hospital Monday, where he died the following day, his wife said Dejmek "shaped Poland's theater as a means of dialogue with the nation, as a means of expressing who we are and what are our aspirations," Olgierd Lukaszewicz, head of Poland's Union of Stage Artists, told the state PAP news agency " Authorities said the production criticized Poland's allegiance to Moscow and banned it, provoking a student revolt that grew into broad criticism of the government and calls for greater freedoms A funeral service is planned for Monday in Lodz She declined to give further details Before his death, he was working on a production of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" that was to open Jan Dejmek is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son 30 at the New Theater, in the central city of Lodz, some 90 miles southwest of Warsaw The theater wants to go ahead with the performances as planned He was 78 Revolutionary Polish Stage Director Dies Jan 1, 11:08 PM EST Kazimierz Dejmek, a stage director whose work sparked a student-led revolt against the communist government, has died, his family said Wednesday Dejmek served as Polish culture minister in 1993 and from 1995-96 In Julia Jordan's latest play, "Tatjana in Color," the travails of a tortured artist share the spotlight with the disillusionment of his devoted muse, a fragile 12-year-old girl Fitzgerald, Wetherhead and Rebecca Wisocky (as Schiele's lover) strike tightly coiled poses against colored backdrops and through imaginary frames Like her "Sarah, Plain and Tall" and "The Summer of the Swans," Jordan's latest piece features Kate Wetherhead in the title role However, as the Lolita figure upon which most of the action in this play hinges, she seems unable to muster the sexuality or libidinal tension suggested in the script The art adds something to the theatrical experience and to understanding Schiele, even if the play leaves unresolved the question of his true morality And, as is so often the case with siblings, she is regularly upstaged by Nicole Lowrence as Tatjana's younger sister, Antonia, who delivers the bulk of Jordan's comic relief As Tatjana, she turns in a good performance, adeptly portraying the end-of-the-world desperation that often accompanies an adolescent's first pass at romance The playwright revisits a theme prevalent in much of her work â€â€? a girl coming of age Audiences exiting the basement theater after the performance see a display of Schiele's work â€â€? hard-lined contorting figures painted in earthy tones 'Tatjana in Color' Shows Disillusionment Nov 4, 6:07 PM EST An artist's work can often be defined by the tireless â€â€? sometimes perilous â€â€? pursuit of inspiration Pomerantz, who also handles the show's sound design, makes conspicuous efforts to capture the spirit and aesthetic of Schiele's portraits Light enhancements simulate the essence of still-life painting â€â€? the representation of a separate, finite moment in time And he mostly succeeds But this tale, set in 1912 in Austria, has teeth not seen in her previous plays â€â€? namely nudity, sex, manipulation and allusions to pedophilia Jordan and director Will Pomerantz largely defer judgment of the accused, using purposeful ambiguity to fuel broader interpretation But while the story treats Schiele, played provocatively by Glenn Fitzgerald, with almost peripheral focus, the physical direction draws heavily from the painter's characteristic style The Culture Project production, at off-Broadway's 45 Bleecker Street Theatre, is the third of four works by Jordan staged this year in New York As suggested by the play's subtitle (which appears only on the program and in smaller typeface than the main title), "The Trial of Egon Schiele" is of secondary importance to Tatjana's experience and development Brad Bellamy capably juggles the trio of patriarchal antagonists that smother and constrict Tatjana â€â€? her school teacher, her father and the judge As historical fiction goes, this play is more fiction than history Jordan's story is loosely based on the true imprisonment of Egon Schiele, the Austrian expressionist best known for his paintings of female nudes Recorded music works well, with dissonant and percussive string arrangements befitting Schiele's morbidity and angular sense of vision Schiele's ambiguous relationship with the impressionable child begins with the latent bliss of an empty canvas but leads both artist and muse into dire jeopardy But as with any art exhibit, especially one that is unique, complete understanding and resolution is not a requisite for appreciation The fresh-faced Wetherhead played a child in each of her projects with Jordan |
