Indeed, the sound of Gruber's rich timbre filled every corner of the arena, spilling onto the stone pavements outside Gazale sang Nabucco's "Deh perdona" (Please forgive me) with heartwrenching tenderness From the pit, Oren breathed with the choristers, creating a rhythmic pulse that propelled the production into an uplifting second half The conductor could not, however, control the orchestra's occasionally "off" intonation and ragged ensemble â€â€? especially when Samuel Ramey strained his once powerful bass-baritone voice in the role of Zaccaria Both tenor Nazzareno Antinori, as Ismaele, and baritone Alberto Gazale as Nabucco, got off to a weak start After the death of two children and his wife, Nabucco was Verdi's emotional and artistic comeback Gruber delivered the lilting, seductive melodies of early Verdi with a voice that ranged from a rich, burnished lower range to a scintillating top Under the stars of an August sky on Saturday night, the Arena di Verona chorus illuminated an uneven performance sprinkled with thrilling moments Nabucco's daughter Fenena, sung by Nicoletta Curiel, warmed the role with her vibrant tone There was clear artistry behind his valiant attempts to bypass his vocal troubles |
