"I'm older I've watched him and Clint Eastwood do it " Politely reticent, Reeves gushes about "Matrix" creators Andy and Larry Wachowski and the film work itself, but clams up when things stray to his private life, especially to hard times he has borne But people think that Keanu is not bright The Face was widely credited with launching the career of supermodel Kate Moss, who featured on the magazine's distinctive red-topped front cover in 1990 at the age of 15 It also helped promote fashion designer Vivienne Westwood in the 1980s "The whole look of it, the style, the typography â€â€? everything was very sexy and suddenly everything around it looked conservative," Paul Morley, a former contributor to The Face, wrote in The Times of London last month The 24-year-old monthly helped revolutionize the British magazine industry with its innovative design, glossy pictures and edgy take on music and fashion Emap had previously said it was suspending publication after the May issue That included British sales of some 25,000 a month The company said it still owned the brand for The Face and that the publication could reappear "at some stage in the future As well as influencing how people looked, the publication did much to change the appearance of the once drab British magazine, thanks to its groundbreaking use of graphic design and fashion spreads by avant-garde photographers When Emap bought The Face's former publisher Wagadon in 1999, the magazine sold some 70,000 copies a month in total, Emap said, while at its peak in the mid 1980s, circulation was over 100,000 "Despite initial interest from a number of different parties, we have been unable to secure a suitable buyer for The Face and have therefore decided to close the magazine," a spokeswoman for Emap said But it suffered a sharp decline in circulation in recent years and attempts by owner Emap PLC to sell it failed For almost 20 years after its launch in 1980, The Face played a leading role in predicting the musical and fashion trends of young people in Britain and beyond "The reason for The Face's demise is that everyone else caught up and overtook it " The last issue of The Face, dated May 2004, appeared two weeks ago More recently, a cover picture of soccer star David Beckham confirmed his status as a style icon Poor Sales Close British Magazine the Face Apr 23, 10:08 AM EST The Face, the pop culture magazine that served as a beacon of cool for young people throughout much of the 1980s and 1990s, is being closed because of poor sales, its publishers said Friday The New Romantics, waif chic, the rave scene and Britpop were among the many movements that reached a mass audience via the magazine's elaborately designed pages and aloof, hip writing The latest available figures show that The Face sold some 40,000 copies a month between July and December in 2003, a spokeswoman for Emap said All those culture and lifestyle programs on television are all ultimately derived from The Face," Morley said |
