The convoluted story opens when Major Kovalyov goes to his uncouth barber, Ivan Yakovlevich, then wakes up in the morning and finds his nose is missing This "Nose" isn't â€â€? here comes the obligatory pun â€â€? running for long AP Entertainment Review: 'The Nose' Aug 1, 12:05 PM EST "The Nose" sticks out in the operatic repertoire, an absurdist work by Shostakovich with a twisted plot and difficult score that is rarely performed Shostakovich's score pulsates with extended drum rolls, peasant songs and ballads, and conductor Leon Botstein and the American Symphony Orchestra brought out the many colors edu Shostakovich wrote the work in 1927, and the symbolism is extreme Kovalyov, embarrassed at his lack of a nose, unsuccessfully tries to see the police chief to discuss the matter and is turned away when he goes to the local paper to place an ad â€â€? a clerk humorously offers him some snuff Petersburg Other roles were notable more for the acting than the singing â€â€?
