BMG to Merge RCA and J Records Nov 22, 9:03 AM EST NEW YORK (AP) â€â€? German-owned music giant BMG Entertainment said it will merge two of its three major record labels, putting record executive Clive Davis in charge of a combined RCA-J Records label group At the same time, while BMG had invested roughly $150 million in the label, Davis is known for his big-spending habits, and some in the industry doubt that the German company was willing to put more money into the venture Davis, highly regarded for his ability to nurture talent and score big hits, set up J after being forced to step down as president of Arista, BMG's other major label, which he founded in the mid-1970s While Davis had quick success at J, establishing acts such as R&B singer Alicia Keys as a new star, he hasn't had much luck recently In a press release, BMG said it was buying Davis' 50 percent stake in J Records, a label the record executive established with BMG's backing just two years ago Saturday after the Actors' Equity Association presented its final offer and the League of American Theatres and Producers rejected it, union spokeswoman Maria Somma said " In all, more than 1,200 actors and stage managers would stop working "The League and Actors' Equity have worked hard and reached tentative agreement on virtually every issue on the table with the exception of salary and per diem for certain categories of touring productions," League president Jed Bernstein said in a statement Saturday The council could call a strike at that meeting Theater Talks Stall; Strike Possible Jul 10, 4:08 PM EST With a possible Broadway strike looming, labor talks broke off Saturday between theater producers and the union representing actors and stage managers across the country A strike would paralyze Broadway during its peak summer season Twenty-four Broadway shows would go dark, from "Avenue Q" â€â€? this year's Tony winner for best musical â€â€? to hits like "Hairspray" and "Movin' Out The parties did not schedule further negotiations, but the Equity Council, the governing body of the actors' union, called a special meeting for Monday to decide what to do next, Somma said " "This is the only way to ensure that audiences across the nation are pleased, not disappointed," he said The union's contract expired June 27 after talks collapsed over key issues including nonunion tours of Broadway shows, soaring health care costs and worker safety m " Somma said the union is not willing to separate the touring issue from its current contract Talks stalled just before 1 a "If it's not Equity, it's not Broadway In March 2003, more than a dozen Broadway musicals shut down for four days after the union walked out, resulting in lost theater revenue of more than $5 million " Across the country, a strike would shut down a dozen productions, including "The Producers" at the Kennedy Center in Washington (as well as "The Glass Menagerie" in rehearsal there), "The Lion King"; "Hairspray" and "Mamma Mia Although union tours still dominate Broadway, the number of cheaper nonunion tours have grown, including the current road companies of "Oliver!" and "Oklahoma!" Many union actors have said they are losing jobs to younger actors who have never worked on a Broadway stage Bernstein said producers are ready to make a deal "on the issues we can agree on, and leave touring to the next contract negotiation Shows were scheduled to go on throughout the weekend "and until further notice," Somma said " The last major walkout on Broadway involved the musicians' union Alan Eisenberg, executive director of Equity, said the negotiations aim to ensure that "Equity productions remain the norm across the United States |
