Keith Olbermann Returns to MSNBC Mar 28, 5:57 PM EST Before he was so rudely interrupted Olbermann said his reasons for leaving in 1998 don't apply now and he's not concerned with replacing one full-time obsession â€â€? Lewinsky â€â€? for another in the war Olbermann, who's jumped back and forth between news and sports and recently did work on CNN, is legend in the business for not sticking with jobs for a long time A big element of Olbermann's talent, his humor, won't be evident for a while because of the war story, Sorenson said "He's edgy, he's got attitude, he's hip, he's clever, he's a good writer," MSNBC President Erik Sorenson said on Friday "We've always been consistent in trying to get the baby boom generation to latch onto us instead of CNN," and Olbermann fits into that plan Olbermann pointed out O'Reilly never beat him in the ratings when they first went head-to-head His new show, "Countdown with Keith Olbermann," is the replacement for Phil Donahue's failed talk show "This, because of the nature of the conflict and the nature of the technology, is a genuinely important story," he said It officially begins Monday Of course, MSNBC has a history of not sticking with shows for a long time, so it may be a perfect match The "countdown" aspect of his new program refers to the planned format of counting down the day's big stories His new program will be more of a news broadcast than the talk show that was "The Big Show," he said Donahue often couldn't get an audience a quarter of O'Reilly's size Sorenson said MSNBC's management had some long talks with him about this before hiring him "We're convinced that he's seen the light and he's made a real life change," Sorenson said Keith Olbermann, who quit a prime-time MSNBC show in disgust five years ago after being forced to talk endlessly about Monica Lewinsky, is coming back to the network in the same time slot "I expect that streak will end on Monday," he said He's matched against cable news' current ratings king, Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly But Olbermann points out he's already been hired as a host of MSNBC's summer Olympics coverage in 2004, so it might be awkward for the network to fire him before then At times in "Litanei & Fruhlingsglaube" ("Litany & Faith in Spring"), Evdokimova's emotions seemed almost too big for the space â€â€? not surprising, considering she has spent much of her career performing with such icons as Rudolf Nureyev in such grand venues as Milan's La Scala and the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad The dance featured a duet's traditional elements â€â€? entree, adagio, variation for the female dancer, variation for the male dancer and coda â€â€? but turned inside out, with normally cooperative lifts and turns made awkward as the grimacing dancers struggled unsuccessfully to break free of the ballet's structure The program concluded with the delightful "On the Fritz," a cheeky "tour de farce" in which Rubsam's impervious backside took center stage as his dancers cast admiring glances, as Linda Ronstadt's rendition of "Just One Look" played Rhythmic and controlled at first, he quickly devolved into flailing slaps, accompanied by Neil Armstrong's narration of his 1969 moon walk The intimate Joyce SoHo provided the perfect setting for up-close observation when Sensedance opened its fall season last week with the return of guest artist and renowned prima ballerina Eva Evdokimova Rubsam and Pujic stood side by side in a glaring spotlight at the end, chests heaving, as feminist Gloria Steinem spoke of a future society in which there will be no roles Eva Evdokimova Returns to Sensedance Oct 6, 2:27 PM EST Half the fun of Henning Rubsam's Sensedance is watching his dancers' expressions â€â€? from playful camp to pleasurable surprise â€â€? as they react to the moves they make " If Rubsam gave a nod to his balletic roots in the Evdokimova solo, he deconstructed them in "Petit Pas," a grand pas de deux premiered Wednesday by Rubsam and the spunky Erika Pujic, who started out on point only to be unshod by her kneeling partner At one point, Pujic leapt out of Rubsam's arms only to hit the wall and ricochet back into his waiting embrace Despite their black unisex leotards and Steinem's talk of humanism, Rubsam's faith in such a future seemed deeply ambivalent Wednesday's performance also premiered a revised version of "Garden," an evocation of communal, humble tasks set to traditional Iraqi music Though somewhat overlong, it was danced with heart and verve by the all-female company, who seemed all sinuous hips and intertwined arms Rubsam performed his solo first, staring straight ahead like a deer in headlights as he struck various parts of his body with his open palm Choreographed by Rubsam for Evdokimova in 2002, the short solo showcased the ballerina's sweeping extensions, as her angular limbs melted into open, delicate lines in a soulful transition from the first Schubert melody, "Litany for the Feast of All Souls," to the second, "Faith in Spring |
