Tommy Franks, who planned and commanded the American-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, has agreed to terms to write his memoirs. The book, currently untitled, will be published by ReganBooks, an imprint of HarperCollins. Financial terms were not disclosed, but Franks had reportedly been seeking a seven-figure deal. "General Franks' story not only addresses the key issues of leadership and modern warfare at a critical juncture in world history, it is also an inspired tale of a young soldier who rose through the ranks of the U.S. Army to the position of commander-in-chief of the United States Central Command," ReganBooks president Judith Regan said in a statement Monday. A four-star general, Franks retired last summer, ending a military career that started in 1967, when he joined the Army. He was soon an artillery lieutenant bound for Vietnam, where his injuries earned him three Purple Hearts. The military has taken Franks from one world hot spot to another — the DMZ in Korea, a changing Europe, the Iraqi desert during Desert Storm. His commendations have included four Legion of Merit medals. He's also received three Bronze Stars, an Air Medal and an Army Commendation Medal, all with "V's" for valor. Just months after Franks took charge of Central Command in July 2000, suicide bombers blew a hole in the USS Cole as it refueled in Yemen, killing 17 American soldiers. It was Franks who had approved Yemen as the refueling site, a decision questioned by some in Congress because of anti-American sentiment there. But there are some unceremonious moments, according to Rocco DiSpirito, the chef and star of NBC's new reality show "The Restaurant." "People fantasize about opening a restaurant. I hear it all the time. They think it's so glamorous, and it can be," DiSpirito told The Associated Press. "But most people don't know it's also part of my job to check the grease traps in the kitchen and make sure they're clean." The 36-year-old is the chef and owner of the Italian-American-the med Rocco's, where the TV show takes place, and Union Pacific, a high-end global fusion restaurant. What kept him sane enough to open Rocco's in an unprecedented seven weeks — with the cameras rolling, no less — was having his mother, Nicolina, a former public school cafeteria worker, by his side as the restaurant's chef de cuisine. "Mama always was the one with candy in her hands for the neighborhood kids, so this makes her very happy," he said.
