At a recent performance of "Cookin' at the Cookery," produced by the Melting Pot Theatre Company, audience members hailed the singing of star Ann Duquesnay (pronounced Doo-kah-nay) with upraised arms and delighted murmurs of approval Caffey, is less successful 'Cookin' at the Cookery' is Great Revival Jan 27, 5:05 PM EST It is said that during Alberta Hunter's comeback performances at the Cookery in the late 1970s, audiences couldn't restrain their love for the legendary blues singer Subjects are dropped as quickly as they are raised The book, by Marion J That's a shame, because Hunter had a remarkable story Hunter was one of the few female singers of her generation to compose her own tunes, and they are a joy to hear And she delivers Hunter's trademark one-liners with perfect timing The reaction, by some accounts, was almost involuntary, inspired by Hunter's soulful improvisations and singing So it falls to Duquesnay and the songs themselves to provide insight into what made Hunter a legend And Caffey never finds a coherent narrative path to follow, leaping disconcertingly from era to era in Hunter's life All of those facts are dutifully relayed, but with little dramatic continuity Hunter's lesbianism, for example, is mentioned in passing in the show's first act, never to be referenced again They are served well by Danny Holgate's masterful arrangements, performed by a tight four-piece jazz band To judge from recordings, her voice isn't a dead ringer for Hunter's â€â€? Duquesnay is more of a belter â€â€? but she inhabits the woman's songs as if she wrote them herself Then she gave up music to become a nurse, a job she held for 20 years before triumphantly returning to the stage at 82 In her career, which began at 11, she played with jazz greats including Armstrong and Fats Waller, starred in Broadway shows and sang abroad for American troops during World War II Her impression of Armstrong's singing brings down the house Shouts of "sing it, baby" and "oh yeah" were showered on Hunter â€â€? then in her 80s â€â€? each time she opened her mouth to sing For those who never got to see the real Hunter, Duquesnay (a Tony winner for "Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk") must be the next best thing The only other performer in "Cookin' at the Cookery" is Debra Walton, who's too cutesy as a young Hunter but superb in several other roles, including Louis Armstrong and rickety club owner Barney Josephson Now, some 20 years after the singer's death, an off-Broadway show about her life is eliciting a similar response Blues romps such as "Rough and Ready Man" are lyrically brilliant, and the one ballad included in the show, "The Love I Have for You," is a heartbreaker Fortunately, both she and the music are more than up to the task "They just wanted out of the building Flames snaked up the wall behind the band and the ceiling caught fire "People were trying to help others and people were smashing out windows, and people were pulling on people and nobody cared how many cuts they got, nobody cared about the bruises or the burns," Butler said Derderian had worked at a competing station in Providence before moving to a Boston station, and was recently brought back to Providence by WPRI " Butler's video was aired repeatedly on national news networks WPRI-TV of Providence had a special interest in picking the West Warwick, R Providence TV Station Captures Club Fire Feb 21, 2:15 PM EST A Rhode Island television station caught arresting video images of a rock club fire that killed scores because it had sent a cameraman there to research a story on nightclub safety It was because of the Chicago incident that WPRI, a CBS and CNN affiliate, sent cameraman Brian Butler to The Station on Thursday night, WPRI managing editor Joseph Abouzeid said Friday It quickly spread, as Butler and some confused audience members headed toward an exit WPRI reporter Jeff Derderian is a part-owner of The Station, Abouzeid confirmed, but he said he would not talk about the reporter's business interest "It's evident over the past few weeks that not only do viewers turn to CNN for breaking news, but our news competitors do as well," CNN spokeswoman Megan Mahoney said Some news organizations require their reporters to get approval of outside business interests, said Bob Steele, director of the ethics program for the Poynter Institute for Media Studies , club, called The Station, because one of its reporters is a part-owner WPRI is part of an affiliation agreement that makes its video available to several networks, including ABC and Fox, but not NBC Earlier this month, CNN also claimed that Fox News Channel improperly aired CNN pictures during coverage of the space shuttle disintegration He said he would be hesitant to have a reporter involved in a significant business in a station's coverage area Meanwhile, CNN was annoyed that NBC used a portion of Butler's video on the "Today" show NBC spokeswoman Allison Gollust said her network cited the principle of fair use, which enables broadcasters to air any available footage on significant stories Butler kept his camera rolling after exiting, capturing a shot of the back door that showed thick black smoke and flames rolling through the doorway Butler, who was not hurt in the blaze, captured pictures of the pyrotechnics display during the rock band Great White's performance I The Rhode Island nightclub fire came three days after 21 people were killed in a stampede at a Chicago bar Telephone calls made to Derderian's home Friday were not answered |
