About 2,500 people will be able to watch from the quay at each of the eight performances in late July 2005 Copenhagen to Stage 'Mermaid' Musical Mar 4, 8:02 AM EST Copenhagen will stage a musical based on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" next year, with 650 amateurs dancing and singing in a huge floating theater, organizers said Wednesday In Andersen's version, the mermaid, a sea king's daughter, falls in love with a human prince and sacrifices her mermaid tail to live with him on land But the prince chooses another woman and the mermaid perishes and is transformed into sea foam " Andersen is known worldwide for his fairy tale classics including "The Ugly Duckling," "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "The Red Shoes The musical, Denmark's biggest theatrical event ever, will mark the 200th anniversary of the fairy tale writer's birth Denmark will celebrate Andersen, who died in 1875, with hundreds of events, parties and festivals "We think it's a great idea to have ordinary Copenhageners staging this musical so they can take part in the Andersen 200-year celebrations," head organizer Nanna Soerensen said The musical will be performed on a stage floating in the Copenhagen harbor Auditions will be held April 2 at the Copenhagen City Hall "`The Little Mermaid' is about longing and the sweetness of falling in love," said Niels Brunse, who will be adopting the fairy tale to script " He also wrote novels, poetry and other stories The play will be based on Andersen's fairy tale and not the 1989 animated Disney version, which had a happy ending "It will be felt that there's both light and darkness in the story, because where light is strongest, shadows are deepest He's the son of Henry Fonda, who died in 1982, and the brother of Jane Fonda â€â€? both Oscar winners " "This is great for me to be able to join my father His daughter is actress Bridget Fonda and his son is Justin Fonda, a cameraman on films such as "Vertical Limit" and "The Last Ride Fonda, who's promoting the DVD release of his 1971 directorial debut "The Hired Hand," accepted the star Wednesday and paid tribute to his place in an acting dynasty He produced and costarred in "Easy Rider," the landmark, Academy Award-nominated biker film of 1969 that made Jack Nicholson a star Fonda got much of his early training in TV in the 1960s in series including "Wagon Train" and "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour His father's star is on Vine Street, while the younger Fonda's star is on Hollywood Boulevard in front of the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel " The 63-year-old also learned what goes on behind the camera Peter Fonda Gets Star on Walk of Fame Oct 23, 2:22 PM EST Peter Fonda has lived up to another of his famous father's honors: a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame I certainly hope my daughter and my son, who is a cameraman, can join me soon," Peter Fonda said at the ceremony |
