That story was told with a chuckle by Stack, a man who clearly didn't take himself or life in Hollywood too seriously

He gave popular young actress Deanna Durbin her much-publicized first screen kiss in "First Love," and played a series of youthful romantic leads before leaving Hollywood to serve with the Navy as an aerial gunnery instructor in World War II

Stack found more series success with "The Name of the Game" (1968-71), "Most Wanted" (1976-77) and "Strike Force" (1981-82) aspx?c=182014 class="art">Robert Stack, whose granite-eyed stare and menacing baritone spelled trouble for television's fictional criminals in "The Untouchables" and real ones in "Unsolved Mysteries," died at his home I got the part," Stack recalled

He recalled playing polo with mentor Spencer Tracy and receiving advice from Clark Gable

Stack's wife Rosemarie found him slumped over at about 5 p "'There's a rumor going around that you're gonna try to be an actor

"He had a bout with a tumor but that was gone

Stack made more than 40 films, including "The Iron Glove" (1954); "Good Morning Miss Dove" (1955) and "Is Paris Burning?" (1966)

"Well, that's just too damn bad," Stewart replied He wouldn't have lived through a bypass

"He brought a bottle of 21-year-old Scotch and put it between us," Stack told the AP His great-great-grandfat her opened one of the city's first theaters, and his grandparents, uncle and mother were opera singers ' No, I don't think I'm Ness, but I sure as hell know I'm not Al Capone It wasn't that, it was his heart m

"I think there's a definite carry-over from Eliot Ness," Stack said in a 1998 interview with The Associated Press In later years he shifted to comedy, mocking his stalwart image in 1980's "Airplane!" and appearing in "1941" (1979), "Caddyshack II" (1988) and "Baseketball" (1998)

"He was feeling so good," she said Thursday He was too weak

"He said 'How'd you like to be in pictures? We'll make a test with Helen Parrish, a little love scene

His autobiography, "Straight Shooting," was published in 1979 He was 84 'Gee, that sounds keen,' I told him

His role as Ness in "The Untouchables" brought him a best actor Emmy in 1960 Actor Robert Stack Dies
May 15, 10:12 AM EST

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- =/celebs/celeb

Stack and his wife wed in 1956 and had two children, Elizabeth and Charles, both of Los Angeles

He died of heart failure, she said The series, awash in Prohibition Era shoot-'em-ups between gangsters and federal agents, drew harsh criticism about its violence along with good ratings for ABC

In 1957, Stack was nominated for a best supporting Oscar for "Written on the Wind," a domestic melodrama starring Lauren Bacall and Rock Hudson

That role, coupled with his job as host of the reality series "Unsolved Mysteries," created an enduring good-guy image

His father, however, "was the only Irishman in County Kerry who couldn't sing, and that's whose singing voice I got," Stack said in 1998 Wednesday

"Unsolved Mysteries," true stories of crime and mysterious disappearances, brought Stack back to TV in 1988, and the popular show continued through the late '90s "Somebody once said, 'You really think you're Eliot Ness The actor had undergone radiation treatment for prostate cancer in October

His postwar career climbed in the 1950s with meatier roles and better projects, including "The High and the Mighty" starring John Wayne in 1954 '"

If Stack tended to appear stiffly humorless on screen, in conversation he was relaxed and jovial, with deep Hollywood roots that gave him a wealth of star-studded anecdotes ' "

Stack was born into a performing arts family in Los Angeles "It's all malarky; even the wonderful part is malarky," he said ' Helen Parrish was a beautiful girl Show up on time, know your lines '

"I thought I'd give it a shot," Stack said he replied

"But Jimmy, what if I never get another part like this?" Stack said Rosemarie Stack said both were with her at the home When he lost the trophy (to Red Buttons, "Sayonara"), Jimmy Stewart reassured him he'd win next time

But the young man had a resonant speaking voice and rugged good looks, enough to catch the eye of producer Joe Pasternak when Stack ventured onto the Universal lot at age 20

"Clark said, 'You're gonna be one thing: A pro "

Although he had a lengthy film career beginning in 1939 with "First Love," Stack's greatest fame came with the 1959-63 TV drama "The Untouchables," in which he played Chicago crimebuster Eliot Ness and won a best actor Emmy And if you ever become a thing called a celebrity â€â€? a word I hate â€â€? if you ever do, and you use that power to push people around, I'm gonna kick you right in the (expletive)

It's very frustrating when you die, then have to redo an hour's work because you forgot to save

When I opened the door and made my way to freedom, the guard never seemed to notice my cell door was ajar during his next patrol minutes later Some big annoyances, however, keep it from being great

Despite these nagging issues, I was drawn to this game's compelling story and thick atmosphere com

â€â€?â€â€?â€â€?

Matt Slagle be reached at mslagle(at)ap After all, this game is about a thief, not an assassin If you kill a guard, bystanders will run away and bring back reinforcements

The levels mix medieval chain mail with the urban grit of steam pipes and other marvels, including Garrett's green mechanical right eye, which can zoom in on distant objects like a telescope thief3 While in prison, I managed to snag the keys from a guard standing too close to my cell room door

Always keep an eye on the crystal in the bottom-center of your screen

But often it's easier to thwart potential threats by eliminating them, then hide the bodies in a dark corner The grunts and groans of wandering zombies aboard a haunted ship are truly chilling, while lonely piano music set against a crackling thunderstorm lends an authentic air of sadness as you root through a dead captain's seaside mansion "Deadly Shadows" won't do it for you automatically

You have several non-lethal options, including a club and a flash bomb which temporarily blinds foes Monitoring the click-clack metronome of shuffling feet is essential to tracking your foes

You play as master thief Garrett in a cloak-and-dagger quest for medallions, jewels and other shiny trinkets through an alternative world called "The City

Alternatively, you have ample weaponry for killing If you approach your targets from behind, one hit to the head is enough to take them out indefinitely

Garrett's specialty is the bow and arrow I apparently discovered a black hole, because when I tried to climb over the crate, I somehow fell out of the game world to an untimely death

I tried sneaky and deadly approaches While prowling the streets, at one point I walked around a crate to see what was behind it

Other times, the characters are as dumb as digital doorknobs

You can slink through the entire game, dodging shadows and shooting out torches with "water arrows" that let you stay hidden Explosive "fire arrows" can take out several enemies at once, while "moss arrows" can gag enemies and make loud surfaces, like metal grating, quieter to walk on While killing is easier than forever evading gazes, it somehow felt like cheating

My biggest complaint was the inconsistent artificial intelligence

Two and a half stars out of four It changes from purple to yellow to let you know how easy you are to see

The AI generally does a great job of mimicking real humans The lighting is fantastic, with flickering torches casting realistic shadows as you pick locks and rifle through treasure chests

Sound is used effectively throughout org</p >

Full frontal dagger attacks rarely succeed Remember, however, that this is a game of stealth

Other effects create atmosphere and emotion There are shadowy factions like the Keepers and Pagans you'll have to deal with as you advance through the game, which is spread across nine days, each with numerous objectives He has a range of arrow types to accomplish various tasks Fortunately, there's an expert mode where killing is prohibited

Several glitches really bugged me Review: Third Thief Game Fun but Flawed
Jul 28, 7:46 AM EST

"Thief: Deadly Shadows" is a flawed but ultimately enjoyable video game where big thrills often bump up against major bouts of frustration "

The story goes well beyond simple pilfering

So, did I enjoy this game? Absolutely There's a lot to like with this $50, M-rated game for Xbox and PC

â€â€?â€â€?â€â€?

Speaking of death, for sanity's sake remember to save the game often

Garrett certainly is sneaky, but his methods and greed would make Robin Hood shudder
