The 13,900-square-foot museum is expected to cost nearly $20 million and is to open in summer 2004, Allen said Thursday during a news conference at the EMP — itself a futuristic, freeform metallic structure at the foot of the Space Needle at the Seattle Center. "The Science Fiction Experience will provide entertaining and thought-provoking exhibits and programs that encourage everyone to dream and imagine not only what is, but what could be," Allen said. Forbes magazine ranks the 50-year-old, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates, as the fourth-richest man in the world, with a fortune estimated at $20.1 billion. Gates tops the Forbes list at $40.7 billion. Allen said he's a longtime science fiction buff, from the first sci-fi novel he read, Robert Heinlein's "Rocket Ship Galileo" to his favorite sci-fi movie, "Blade Runner." "People see beyond a stage show," lawmaker David Chu said Monday. Chu said he voted for the expenditure in May, when he believed that most of the money would be used to create temporary jobs. Now he calls the program a waste. The Legislative Council authorized spending up to $128 million for the "relaunch" effort, but only about $91 .7 million will be spent, said Christina Lai, a spokeswoman for the investment agency that handled the cash. The campaign included a concert series headlined by The Rolling Stones and a friendly soccer match featuring Spanish team Real Madrid. But Chu said Hong Kong should have used the money to address pressing economic problems such as unemployment, which was pushed by SARS to a record 8.7 percent, though it has since eased. Lai declined any immediate comment. Severe acute respiratory syndrome infected 1,755 people in Hong Kong and killed 299, devastating the economy. |
