Matthew Polenzani as the court poet Iopas, and Gregory Turay as the Trojan sailor Hylas Now, to mark the 200th anniversary of the French composer's birth, the Metropolitan Opera has mounted a new, uncut production of his masterwork She embodies the character so completely that her singing becomes a natural extension of her emotions Voigt also has slimmed down noticeably since last season It's baffling why the Met has not engaged Hunt Lieberson more org " Part One, all tumult and anxiety, depicts the fall of Troy at the hands of the Greeks; Part Two, more lyrical and expansive, brings Aeneas to Carthage, where he falls in love with Queen Dido, only to desert her so he can fulfill his destiny by voyaging on to Italy As the crazed Cassandra, Voigt used her dramatic soprano with great artistry, unleashing fearsome torrents of sound in her hysterical outbursts, yet reining in her voice during her few tender moments with her fiance, Coroebus In the first scene, we watch through this space as the Trojan horse is led into the city Hunt Lieberson's Dido was a marvel, her lustrous tone bringing nobility and passion to her portrayal Her only previous role was as Myrtle Wilson in John Harbison's "The Great Gatsby," and she joined the cast of "Les Troyens" only as a late addition after Olga Borodina withdrew because of pregnancy Berlioz Epic Given New Production at Met Feb 11, 4:15 PM EST "Oh my noble Cassandra, my heroic virgin, I must then resign myself: I shall never hear you The production attracted much curiosity because it marked Zambello's return to the Met a decade after her debut effort, a coffin-strewn version of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor," was hooted off the stage It's an amazing work, one of the most ambitious operas ever written, as Berlioz recreates the legendary world of Virgil's "Aeneid In Carthage, we look beyond to golden fields of grain, and then, in the final scene, to Aeneas' ship setting sail from the harbor " He and Hunt Lieberson blended their voices to ravishing effect in the extended love duet that ends Act IV, "Nuit d'ivresse Berlioz's heroines, both of whom die by their own hands, dominate their respective parts of the opera The role of the chorus is crucial in "Les Troyens," and chorus master Raymond Hughes deserved the cheers he received in his curtain call along with his troops As Aeneas, Heppner was in fine, ringing voice â€â€? except for a cracked high note at the climax of his big aria, "Inutile regrets Here, the two rush offstage together and then are represented by dancers who descend from the rafters suspended by wires and carry out an awkward aerial ballet The supporting singers were first-rate, from baritone Dwayne Croft as Coroebus to mezzo Elena Zaremba as Dido's sister, Anna, to bass Robert Lloyd as her minister, Narbal metopera Monday night's premiere made for a long evening â€â€? over five hours including two intermissions â€â€? but an enthralling one, thanks to a splendid cast led by soprano Deborah Voigt, tenor Ben Heppner and mezzo Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, and an inventive production by Francesca Zambello " â€â€?â€â€?â€â€?
