His best work stemmed from his ability to live with and understand some unsavory characters â€â€? criminals, bikers, politicians â€â€? while remaining enough of an outsider to write critical prose This may be masterful collage; it seems more like a lack of editing "Half the population would never live to vote, and the other half would perish in the inevitable election-night holocaust " The paranoid office-seeker is none other than gonzo journalist Hunter S In the past 10 years Thompson seems to have been content to write mostly from home rather than get on the road and cover "sick and twisted" subjects "Kingdom of Fear" continues that trend, with a twist: It constantly elides time and changes subject matter, switching from present-day musings to archival dispatches and interviews without warning â€â€? or reason His over-the-top satire never fails to provoke laughter and shock, and sometimes revulsion But we may be better off without a straight behind-the-scenes autobiography " Throughout the book Thompson recounts the events leading to allegations that he assaulted a woman at his Colorado home in 1990 Most of the book is composed of diarylike episodes involving drugs and violence that inevitably evolve into meditations on paranoia and fear: hallucinations of the state of security as Thompson travels to Cuba with actor Johnny Depp; a wild tale of debauchery and violence involving a character who resembles Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas; and an attempt to survive Southern California His very being exudes the enduring power of American institutions, including the First, Second and Fourth Amendments, "Monday Night Football" and rock 'n' roll "I have the soul of a teenage girl in the body of an elderly dope fiend," Thompson says after fleeing Hollywood The property's owner, who is running for sheriff, has been told that more than 200 sticks of dynamite have gone missing nearby and his life has been threatened But he lets contemporary newspaper accounts tell most of the story of the trial; he provides little of his own analysis That spirit, while not fully realized, is here A report from the 1983 invasion of Grenada features a concise explanation of why and how the United States got involved "No wonder they can't understand me He does comment on the 2000 Florida election debacle, as well as on the Sept 11 attacks Thompson, author of the masterpieces "Hell's Angels" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"; and the election his failed 1970 run for sheriff of Aspen on the "Freak Power" ticket Thompson (Simon & Schuster, 351 pages, $25) " Thompson will always be known for his superhuman adventures in firearms, the sex industry and illegal substances (though, as he acknowledges, "My drug use is exaggerated or I would be long since dead") Thompson describes his beat as "The Death of the American Dream," but he stands as a testament to its vibrancy In short dispatches from the 1972 Democratic National Convention and the fall of Saigon he makes his exploits the center of the stories while not losing sight of the bigger picture But his analysis is most often on the mark "The very act of public protest, even violent protest, was essentially optimistic," Thompson writes of the 1960s events that spurred him to run for office, "and actually a demonstration of faith (mainly subconscious, I think) in the father figures who had the power to change things 11 attacks, but a more vital Thompson would have traveled to Palm Beach (as he did for his brilliant 1983 article on the Roxanne Pulitzer divorce trial) and New York In the 30 years since what could be considered his most important book, "Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72," Thompson has published mostly collections of essays, letters and aborted fiction But it's his innocence â€â€? not often noted â€â€? that allows him tremendous insight into politics, and sometimes even into the human heart This is unfortunate because the implications of the trial â€â€? authorities searched his house for 11 hours, he says, coming up with enough "drug-related items" to file felony charges â€â€? are relevant as Americans debate how much power to cede to law enforcement after the Sept But it's a mess Even second-rate Thompson is required reading for some, and there are gems here It would be like having a magician divulge his secrets â€â€?â€â€?â€â€?
