Now, her fans are finding out that music isn't Noonan's only talent Her love affair with western Maine dates to her summer job as a singing chambermaid at a lakeside resort in Center Lovell Noonan said marketing her own CDs makes good economic sense, despite the many hours she and her husband spend taking and filling orders She followed up last year with a second album, "Big Iron," a collection of familiar cowboy songs she loved as a child, plus a few originals We were trying to keep our house," Noonan says When a triple murder in a trailer rocked this rural hamlet eight winters ago, Noonan wrote "Ballad of Brownfield," tacking on an embellishment about the third body falling into the ice, not to be found until spring Was Flagg, who makes commercial fishing nets, saw his business collapse when the government imposed strict fishing regulations and began a boat buyback program in hopes of reversing the decline in fish stocks Letters From Maine," is a collection of comical e-mails she sent to her Internet pen pal, a music producer in Los Angeles "I'm really drawn to dark melodies One unique aspect of her business is the honor system which enables callers on her toll-free telephone line, 866-CAROLCD, to receive a CD along with a note of thanks and a bill The colorful figures who appear in her new book include 300-pound Franny Fox, who didn't know she was pregnant when she gave birth in aisle three of Wal-Mart, and Punkin, the potbellied pig who had to be put down after it bit an antiques dealer on the backside "And I think it's the Irish in me It's a sharp departure for Noonan, who was ready to hit it big a decade ago when her folk rock band, Knots and Crosses, signed a contract with Island records She even published her book on her own Noonan combines her singing and storytelling while performing at festivals and coffeehouses, punctuating each series of songs with an oddball tale or two while her guitarist retunes his instrument â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? On the Net: http://www The stories are true, she insists, at least for the most part, although her characters sometimes strain the bounds of credibility The anticipated album never happened, but Noonan went on to make three solo albums for Rounder To make ends meet and save the farm they loved, she took on two full-time jobs Music was the least of our concerns After Flagg managed to downsize his business to reflect the reduced size of the fishing fleet, he encouraged his wife to return to the music business on her own terms The couple have two barns, three horses, two dogs and a barn cat Sales of her first self-produced CD, "Carol Noonan," have already exceeded those of her three earlier solo albums combined, Noonan said The book, titled "Dear Mr She sells 85 percent of her albums that way and says she has never been stiffed Her performances of English and Irish traditional music have led critics to compare her to Sandy Denny and the young Joan Baez The Internet has enabled Noonan to pursue her musical career from her 200-year-old farmhouse on a remote 10-acre site "I'm just a dark Irish storyteller And I think if the content is dark, it tends to be more in minor keys, which appeals to me musically," she says For Noonan, that means putting out her CDs on her own label, marketing them on the Internet and arranging her schedule of performances without a manager, booking agent or promotions person With a range from low alto to high soprano, her voice has a natural vibrato that has been with her since childhood She would make up beds by day, then perform Broadway show tunes and light opera in the evening Her plans for next year include putting out a new album and traveling to the West Coast to perform " One of her songs, "Leather Glove," is about a woman locked in an abusive marriage who stabs her husband to death as he strangles her, leaving them to be buried side by side "It was a hard time Being able to indulge either talent, much less both, is a refreshing change for Noonan, who had put her musical career on hold six years ago when her husband, Jeff Flagg, fell victim to the tough times afflicting New England fishermen Noonan's ability to spin a good yarn may also be tied to her ancestral roots She learned from her mother that she had a great uncle in Ireland who was a shanachie, a storyteller who goes from pub to pub plying his trade in return for pints Singer Noonan Is Drawn to Dark Melodies Mar 19, 12:05 PM EST Folk singer Carol Noonan, whose heart-rending ballads tell of star-crossed love and violent death, worries that her fans might look upon her work as the product of either a sick imagination or a horrific past "But I've really had a pretty happy life," Noonan says We really love tragedy carolnoonanmusic com " No stranger to New England folkies, Noonan, 44, is expanding her fan base nationwide She worked in a florist shop and a restaurant, putting in 80 hours a week A Massachusetts native, Noonan studied voice at the New England Conservatory of Music but dropped out after her junior year They were well-received by critics but sales were lackluster She has emerged as an accomplished storyteller who spins outlandish tales about drunken fishermen she met while tending bar on Portland's waterfront and quirky neighbors in her hometown in the western Maine foothills " ABT loves the classics, and does them lavishly As Siegfried, the elegant Jose Manuel Carreno looked the part and danced well to Tchaikovsky's familiar score, but the exciting dancing in this work really belongs to the ballerina "HereAfter" was a huge, ambitious production by Australian choreographers Natalie Weir and Stanton Welch, set to choral music by John Adams and Carl Orff â€â€? performed by 120 singers on huge hanging risers Megan Fairchild was a silvery quick butterfly, and by far the cutest dancers were the young pupils of the School of American Ballet, decked out colorfully as insects "Carnival of the Animals," narrated by actor John Lithgow, told the tale of a youngster who gets stuck for the night in the Museum of Natural History, and sees the animals come to life in the form of people he knows: his friends' annoying parents; his school librarian; his piano teacher On Saturday afternoon, Julie Kent was a vulnerable Odette and a smiling, confident Odile, daughter of the evil sorcerer von Rothbart â€â€? although perhaps not as fiery as in some interpretations At one end of Lincoln Center was American Ballet Theatre's "Swan Lake," that warhorse of a ballet that continues to draw fans of all ages â€â€? from grandparents to little girls in taffeta dresses â€â€? with its story of a princess doomed to live as a swan and the prince who has one chance to save her But the standout was the choreography by Balanchine, who died in 1983 But the stage seemed crowded with dancers moving chaotically, and the production was dark and difficult to grasp Daniel Ulbricht was an energetic Puck, bouncing about, weaving mischievous spells and soaring up to the heavens on the final note of Mendelssohn's beautiful score On Saturday evening, Darci Kistler was a sweet and playful Titania, queen of the fairies, and Tom Gold was a very royal Oberon "A Midsummer Night's Dream," based of course on Shakespeare's comedy, is more of an ensemble piece, less focused on bravura dancing The company that he co-founded will celebrate the centennial of his birth next season, with new ballets including one by Broadway choreographer Susan Stroman, set partly to the music of Irving Berlin And Wheeldon's "Liturgy," an abstract work running less than a quarter of an hour, was a compelling duet for the impossibly flexible Wendy Whelan and her partner, Jock Soto Over at ABT, the two new ballets offered this season also earned mixed reactions One hopes there is a very good trampoline catching them offstage Titania and Oberon At the end of Kevin McKenzie's staging of "Swan Lake," Odette and Prince Siegfried hurl themselves headlong into the lake Her best moment as Odette came when she turned her back to the audience, stood rigidly still and then sped sideways across the stage, arms flapping wildly; for a moment she looked truly swanlike Martins' "Guide to Strange Places," a rather dense, abstract piece set to music by John Adams, received a lukewarm response, but there was enthusiasm for Wheeldon's new works, which couldn't have been more different "A Midsummer Night's Dream" capped a two-month season in which NYCB premiered three new ballets â€â€? one by artistic director Peter Martins and two by the company's young resident choreographer, Christopher Wheeldon, who has emerged as one of the brightest lights in the ballet world Across the plaza, New York City Ballet offered a more lighthearted musing on the elusive nature of love, with a happy ending to boot: George Balanchine's lovely "A Midsummer Night's Dream This is true of the sets and costumes but also the drama The most exciting dancing came from Jennie Somogyi, in a small but technically difficult role as Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons "Artemis" was a charming if brief work, based on the Greek myth of the goddess of the hunt and choreographed by Lar Lubovitch, with lovely costumes and perfect lighting that bathed the dancers in a warm, misty glow The dazzling part is in Odile's quick, sharp dancing, including a set of nearly 30 fouette turns What everyone waits for in "Swan Lake," though, is the Black Swan pas de deux, where Odile â€â€? dressed in black, of course â€â€? so dazzles the prince that he betrays Odette Ballet Season Ends With Two Classics Jun 30, 4:32 PM EST Odette and Siegfried New York's spring ballet season ended over the weekend with two popular classics about the joys and inconstancies of love, be it of the human, ornithological or otherworldly variety |
