Nick Cannon's Career Keeping Him Busy Dec 29, 7:53 AM EST Nick Cannon is so busy these days he sometimes has a hard time keeping his roles straight " " Cannon said he plays the voice of Louis the Mouse in the "Garfield" movie The 23-year-old star of "Love Don't Cost a Thing" has his own Nickelodeon show, has just released a self-titled album featuring the single "Gigolo," and has a role in the upcoming "Garfield" movie based on the comic strip cat " "Last time I was on Nickelodeon I was performing live, and usually when I perform I take my shirt and throw my clothes out into the audience," Cannon told the San Francisco Chronicle on Sunday "I had to vibe off of those "My character actually likes macadamia nut cookies," Cannon said "I guess I kind of forgot I was doing a show for kids, and the fire marshall jumped onstage in the middle of the show and told me I couldn't be throwing stuff in the audience because they might get hurt He also is executive producer of the action-adventure film, "Underclassman Cecilie has been waiting at the hospital for news about Joachim when Niels walks up to her in his white uniform and says he needs to tell her something R â€â€? Parental guidance suggested ) Cecilie doesn't give up, but with every new rejection from Joachim, each one crueler than the last, she relies more and more on Niels "Open Hearts" doesn't overtly ask any big questions, and certainly doesn't provide any answers Joachim's spine has been shattered, leaving him a quadriplegic Working from a script by Anders Thomas Jensen, director Susanne Bier has found the best way â€â€? or as good a way as any â€â€? to tell a strikingly well thought-out story Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian "Open Hearts," a NewMarket Films release, is rated R for language and sexuality Joachim isn't dead, and Niels isn't his doctor (Kaas, his power contained entirely in his voice or his silence, delivers a brilliant, unsentimental performance Mikkelsen chews on the delicious strangeness of Niels' predicament: He'd never looked for an affair, but his wife's actions allow him to fall into one Though the shooting style and the performances make the movie feel loose and spontaneous, Bier is great at structure; she keeps everything in perfect equilibrium With the encouragement of his guilt-stricken wife, Niels becomes a sounding board for the young woman, who has no family Well aware of what the diagnosis means for him physically but unable to confront it emotionally, he asks Cecilie to stop seeing him Their relationship is vivid and spontaneous, their fabulous chemistry established in two brisk scenes A walk on the grounds outside the hospital progresses to phone calls to a late-night request that he visit her apartment PG-13 â€â€? Special parental guidance strongly suggested for children under 13 After the car accident, no event feels like it's imposed upon the narrative, as if Bier just sat back and observed what happens next Ultimately, this emotionally penetrating film is about how life confronts us with circumstances we never would have considered â€â€? all we can do is react, and move on As Cecilie, for whom the sugary romanticism of the pop songs she listens to has never been challenged, Richter radiates empathy but has nowhere to put it 'Open Hearts' Is Warm, Yet Incisive Drama Feb 28, 11:31 AM EST The Dogma 95 manifesto, a brash and slightly tongue-in-cheek cinematic "vow of chastity" signed by four Danish directors in 1995, has resulted in a few searing films, but now it has produced a lovely one He just wants to tell Cecilie about his family's involvement in the accident, and offer his help She responds: "Is he dead?" "Open Hearts" is full of little details like this â€â€? misunderstandings that ring true Some material may be inappropriate for young children Kaas makes every scene count as Joachim, as does Paprika Steen (also terrific in "The Celebration") as Niels' wrung-out wife "Open Hearts," a warm yet incisive, deeply moving domestic drama, arrives with none of the fuss or fanfare that greeted earlier Dogma films like Thomas Vinterberg's "The Celebration" and Lars von Trier's "The Idiots Running time: 113 min A woman in her late 30s and her teenage daughter get out of the car; soon we learn they are the wife and daughter of Niels (Mads Mikkelsen), a physician But then comes the event that sets everything else in motion: Joachim is about to embark on a rock-climbing trip, but when he gets out of the car another vehicle slams into him from behind She begins with Cecilie (Sonja Richter), a pretty, stylish 25-year-old who cooks at a fancy restaurant, accepting the clumsy marriage proposal of her scruffily handsome boyfriend, Joachim (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) " The manifesto's requirements â€â€? shooting on handheld digital video, with no artificial lighting or musical score â€â€? seem to be driven by the material rather than imposed upon it But by the end, Bier has explored the human condition in a truthful way All ages admitted |
