What makes this study in contrasts work so well is the presence of two formidable actors â€â€? Marian Seldes and Brian Murray After intermission, Albee takes over, and laughter reigns A coupling of a different sort is dissected by Albee in the rarely seen playlet "Counting the Ways And in "Not I," the evening's brief curtain raiser, she does it with just her mouth, the only part of her body visible on a dark stage The husband even plays the old game of "she loves me, she loves me not" â€â€? with a rose, not a daisy, pulling off the petals to determine what is the real answer " Come to think of it, the actor, who can bluster with the best of them, would make a terrific Ebenezer Scrooge, as he rages through what appears to be the man's own funeral Let's start with Seldes, the grandest of ladies the American theater now possesses The expert assistance of Murray and Seldes gives those ruminations a special glow The actress knows how to hold the stage Murray takes center stage in the second Beckett offering, "A Piece of Monologue In "Footfalls," the final Beckett offering, Seldes dresses as if she were auditioning to play an elderly Druid princess, clomps about the stage while talking to her mother (the disembodied head of actress Delphi Harrington) It's never made clear "Counting the Ways," directed with the lightest of touches by Lawrence Sacharow, shows Albee, surprisingly, in an almost romantic mood â€â€? rueful and cheekily reflective Love Act 1 is all-Beckett and all-angst if not outright despair If the meaning is not exactly clear, the effect is riveting " It's a hilarious little vaudeville, done mostly in short sketches, that depicts what happens after a wife asks her husband, "Do you love me?" The rumpled Murray and the prim Seldes, dressed in a skirt and sweater of robin egg's blue plus a string of pearls, excel in Albee's banter There's a hypnotic rhythm to these thoughts that Seldes delivers in a slight Irish accent All bases are pretty much covered in "Beckett/Albee," the collective title for several one-act plays by Samuel Beckett and Edward Albee that wisely have been installed in off-Broadway's Century Center for the Performing Arts At a preview performance, Murray made a sly reference to the recent California recall voting (not favorable to the governor-elect), while Seldes delivered a sweetly remonstrative plea to theatergoers not to crumple their programs and throw them away on the sidewalk so the actors could see them when they left the theater Death Their conversation is playful, the opposite of the corrosive dialogue another Albee twosome use in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" These helpmates talk of sex and children; she disparaging the first and he questioning how many of the second they actually have Their relationship is almost one of master and servant, an onerous give-and-take that has lasted through the years and shows no sign of getting any easier " In it, the actor is dressed in a white nightshirt, looking as if he just stepped out of "A Christmas Carol The actors step out of character at one point to identify themselves in a bit of real-life improvisation Out of that mouth, a slash of red that pierces the gloom, cascades a series of recollections, a scattershot biography rich in imagery if not clarity Seldes, Murray Shine in 'Beckett/Albee' Oct 9, 5:11 PM EST Life In "Gothika," a supernatural thriller that opens Friday, Berry plays Miranda Grey, a psychologist who has a rainy-night vision of a girl bursting into flames, then wakes up in a cell at her own psych ward accused of murdering her hubby, with no memory of the deed Berry admits she was creeped out during filming "I believe there are unsettled spirits â€â€? or settled spirits â€â€? just still among us, around us The roll required little dolling up on Berry's part, which suits the actress fine " The movie also gave her nightmares But does Berry believe in ghosts?
