"This city is just not able financially to support a jumbo jet," general director Pamela Rosenberg said last week "We still think we can be a fabulous opera company San Francisco Opera Reducing Performances Jan 29, 8:39 AM EST The deficit-ridden San Francisco Opera will reduce the number of its performances over the next three years in an effort to shrink the annual operating budget from about $60 million to $45 million " This compares with 88 performances of 11 or 12 productions that's been the rule for the past decade " The opera company had a deficit of $7 6 million for the 2001-02 season and is predicting a $9 The amount we'll be producing is less, but we'll be doing that optimally "For the last 15 years, the San Francisco Opera has been offering too much volume," Rosenberg said Beginning with the 2005-06 season, the company will stage about 65 performances a year spread over nine productions, Rosenberg said The 2004-05 season will have eight productions "To me, that says that instead of doing eight performances of a production and selling 70 percent of our capacity, we should do six performances and sell 90 percent "Unlike the Lyric Opera of Chicago, which does eight productions a year and can sell out 10 performances each, our average ticket sales throughout the '90s was around 85 percent The 2003-04 season, announced earlier this month, features nine productions, compared with 11 this season 2 million shortfall this year There are just 35 other paintings around the world attributed to Vermeer, making auctions of his work a rare event The work, showing a young woman playing music, with her face turned toward the viewer, was the first Vermeer painting be put up for auction in more than 80 years, Sotheby's said During that time, a major Vermeer exhibition in London sold out, and a film based on a Vermeer painting, "Girl with a Pearl Earring," starring Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson, was a worldwide hit Like many of the artist's more famous works, it shows off his widely regarded skill with light and color The old master has proved immensely popular with the public in recent years The last time a Vermeer was offered for sale at auction was 1921, Sotheby's said Until last year, experts had disagreed about the significance of the work, which had lost its Vermeer attribution after a forgery scandal in the 1940s 5 million when it went under the hammer at Sotheby's in central London After more than 10 years of extensive research by leading scholars, it finally took its place alongside Vermeer's other paintings A company spokeswoman said it was sold to an anonymous buyer for $30,101,472, including a buyer's premium But the painting spent most of the 20th century languishing in near obscurity The painting is now the only accepted Vermeer work currently in private hands, Sotheby's said The 10 inch-by-8 inch picture, "Young Woman Seated at the Virginals," far exceeded the reserve price of $5 Vermeer Painting Sells for More Than $30M Jul 7, 6:31 PM EST The first painting by the Dutch Old Master Johannes Vermeer to be sold at an auction in decades was bought for more than $30 million Wednesday |
