Randy Graff's Golde is a kinder, less astringent helpmate than Maria Karnilova's original Bock and Harnick have supplied a jaunty new number, "Topsy-Turvy," for Yente, the matchmaker, played with appropriate gusto by Nancy Opel

One thing Leveaux hasn't tampered with is Jerome Robbins' original choreography, staged here by Jonathan Butterell

Molina delivers a subdued, shtick-free performance, finding his Tevye in shades of gray Here, there's a new one, too All of its major New York revivals, including one with original star Zero Mostel, have been unsurprising re-creations of the memorable 1964 production Set in rural, pre-Revolutionary Russia, the tale of Tevye and his daughters who tear him away, one by one, from deeply held traditions is a universal one Strange creatures swirl around the stage while Tevye's daughter and her intended hang suspended in midair above the chaos And Molina rises to its big dramatic moments In "Tradition," "Fiddler" possesses one of the finest openings of any work of musical theater After 40 years, "Fiddler on the Roof" still exerts considerable emotional pull

And the beautiful score is more than that one song Mostel's Tevye was big, bright and bold, as colorful as designer Boris Aronson's original Chagall-inspired settings

Designer Tom Pye has placed the village of Anatevka in a large forest of birch trees, lighted by a large moon and twinkling stars â€â€? with the orchestra sitting on one side of the stage It is a model of concise yet heartfelt storytelling

The big question mark is Alfred Molina as Tevye, the humble Jewish milkman at the center of the show The three eldest daughters are beautifully sung by Sally Murphy, Laura Michelle Kelly and Tricia Paoluccio The song, music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, quickly defines character, time and place, setting up the audience for a sorrowful yet eventually uplifting journey

Revive it exactly as it was first done, and you'll be accused of embalming; change too much and cries of "desecration" fill the air Even after 40 years, it has lost none of its power Carefully Fiddlin' With 'Fiddler on Roof'
Feb 26, 9:08 PM EST

It's not easy being a classic work of musical theater

Leveaux pays particular attention to the sweet, sad moments involving Tevye's family And the longer Mostel did the role, the larger he got The rustic setting is oddly Chekhovian in its beautiful isolation â€â€? maybe a little too much for a poor Russian village

Consider "Fiddler on the Roof," one of the last great musicals of Broadway's Golden Age Each daughter is given her due; so is Tevye's moment alone with his wife, Golde, when he plaintively asks, "Do You Love Me?"

But then the director also is unafraid of a little excess

He has great success with one of the musical's more flamboyant scenes: the dream sequence in which Tevye convinces his wife that their eldest daughter, Tzeitel, should marry the hapless tailor Motel instead of the butcher Lazar Wolf

That won't do for director David Leveaux, the man who carefully rethought last season's adventurous, Tony Award-winning revival of "Nine Their suitors are a particularly diverse lot, especially John Cariani as a rubber-legged, perpetually twitching Motel For those who grew up listening to the original cast recording, hearing each melody is like greeting an old friend That works well later in the show when things get more serious, but it gets the evening off to a questionable start, particularly when Molina, not the strongest of singers, delivers a tentative rendition of "If I Were a Rich Man " His "Fiddler," while not as radical in concept, manages to shake off the past â€â€? with mostly satisfying results

His version opened Thursday at Broadway's Minskoff Theatre No matter "

Fortunately, the actor is rescued by the musical's fine book, adapted by Joseph Stein from the stories of Sholom Aleichem

"

Quite why the role would have been difficult to play and quite what the secret is cannot be revealed without giving away the film Kidman, however, is outstanding, and shows that in addition to her status as a glamorous star she has developed into an outstanding actress "

"I read the book and the script and thought if they have faith in me, I'll keep it as simple as possible, learn my lines and leave it at that," the Oscar-winning Welsh-born actor said, leading to a quick counterclaim by his director, Robert Benton So it was ironic that the star, too, appeared cagey Saturday and was accused of being less than frank "The risk he took, the courage it took for him to do this role is amazing "

Hopkins had similar praise The enormous amount of work and energy that he put into this role is staggering," the director said 6 "

Hopkins, who introduced his film at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, plays a professor whose life is governed by a secret Anthony Hopkins Shows Film at Venice Fest
Aug 30, 12:49 PM EST

Anthony Hopkins' new film "The Human Stain" tells the tale of a brilliant man brought down by political correctness â€â€? a modern trend that the esteemed actor describes as "a cancer Kramer" (1979) and "Places in the Heart" (1984)

"Excuse me, but he's not telling the truth "

Also Saturday, several works competing for the main Golden Lion award were screened, including Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira's "A Talking Picture"; and German director Margarethe von Trotta's "Rosenstrasse " Describing the difficulty of the complex role, he said: "Did I have a challenge? No Suffice to say, the character has an attribute that Hopkins has never attempted before and is unlikely to play again Silk's life falls apart until he begins an affair with a troubled young woman, played by Nicole Kidman, and decides to unburden himself of the secret

"She's lovely, she's beautiful to work with, very friendly and a wonderful actress," he said " In the separate Upstream competition for less-mainstream films, Sofia Coppola's "Lost in Translation," starring Bill Murray, had its first screening

Of the PC trend, he said: "It is a cancer â€â€? that's all I can say

"She is really a director's actor

The film does have some fine scenes, notably a surprising dance sequence with Silk and his writer friend Nathan Zuckerman (Gary Sinise) in which the two lonesome characters cut a rug to Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek "If you look at her films, I think she has grown as an artist

Awards are handed out at the end of the 11-day festival on Sept "

The film includes terrific actors, but some â€â€? in particular, Hopkins and Sinise â€â€? seem miscast despite strong performances "If you work with someone who's really good and prepared, it's not really work, it's an enjoyable process Whatever you want, she will do," he said

"Nicole is, I believe, one of the most accomplished actors I know," said Benton, who won Oscars for "Kramer vs

The movie attempts a novelistic approach to telling the tale, skipping back and forth between past and present

"

"It's always been my dream to do a dance scene with Anthony," Sinise joked Saturday

"The Human Stain," based on the acclaimed novel by Philip Roth, describes a hard-driving professor, Coleman Silk, whose career is ruined by an unfair claim of racism "What more can I say? I begged to be in this movie so I could out-tap him, but I think he stole the scene

I don't want to expand on it Unfortunately, the film doesn't quite gel, though the tale itself is remarkable, and will certainly encourage viewers to buy the Roth novel
