Six of Harrison's songs were featured, beginning with "Something" and another great solo performance by Corella Festive Spring Opening for ABT at the Met May 6, 5:15 PM EST American Ballet Theatre's spring gala was like a kid's fantasy trip to the candy store: little tastes of all the best moments of the next eight weeks, leaving you on a pleasant sugar high After intermission, it was time for the dancers to let their hair down â€â€? literally Virtually all of ABT's principal dancers were on display, and they did not disappoint Perhaps the most striking staging was saved for last: "My Sweet Lord" had the full cast leaping across the stage, left to right, again and again in a continuous line, finally ending with one dancer left onstage to point to a portrait of Harrison that suddenly appears from above The evening was one of the social events of the season, and glittery pastel-colored spring evening gowns filled the Metropolitan Opera House Monday night â€â€? even if the weather was wet and dreary At Monday's preview, baritone Thomas Meglioranza sang "Estuans Interius" from Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana But the greatest ovation was reserved for a humorous dance from "Don Quixote" â€â€? a so-called "pas de deux a quatre" (a "duet" for four dancers) that had Julio Bocca comically rushing around the stage, befuddled, trying to partner three ballerinas at once: Nina Ananiashvili, Ashley Tuttle and Xiomara Reyes Broadway choreographer (and former Bob Fosse muse) Ann Reinking has contributed a beautiful twisting, churning dance to "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" â€â€? a pas de deux for Sandra Brown and Carreno, with a black chair as a prop The evening was co-chaired by Caroline Kennedy, who recalled in remarks to the audience how much she had always loved going to the ballet with her mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and then waved into the wings to her own daughter, Tatiana, celebrating her 13th birthday The dance, choreographed by Natalie Weir and Stanton Welch, depicts the spiritual journey of one man's life It was hard to recognize many of the female dancers, in jeans and midriff-baring tops and long flowing hair, as they danced the tribute to Harrison, who died in 2001 at age 58 The Act I waltz from "Swan Lake," choreographed by ABT's artistic director, Kevin McKenzie, with lavish costumes by Zack Brown, ended the first part of the evening Nor did the costumes, which included a contribution by Calvin Klein: casual jeans for the cast of "Within You Without You," a stirring tribute to the late George Harrison that premiered last season The dancing got more exciting with the graceful pas de deux from Anthony Tudor's "The Leaves Are Fading," beautifully danced by Amanda McKerrow and John Gardner Among ABT's highlights this season, which runs through June 28: the world premieres of "HereAfter" and Lar Lubovitch's "Artemis," Cojocaru's guest appearances and the Kirov Ballet's Diana Vishneva in "Romeo and Juliet," in June The dynamic Angel Corella ran onstage at full speed for his powerful solo from "HereAfter," which has its world premiere later this month with accompaniment from the 120-member New York Choral Society Julie Kent was appealing in a short red dress for "I Dig Love," along with Stiefel and Herman Cornejo; Stiefel reappeared three songs later for "Within You Without You," along with Murphy The ballet should prove an exciting platform later this week for the guest appearance of Romanian dancer Alina Cojucaru, an up-and-coming, highly touted principal dancer with London's Royal Ballet That was followed by another pas de deux, from "Esmerelda" â€â€? this one quicker and livelier, featuring impressive turns by Paloma Herrera, partnered with Marcelo Gomes " Another crowd-pleaser was the excerpt from "Diana and Acteon," with wonderful leaps from the Cuban-born dancer Jose Manuel Carreno (his entrance alone had a few people gasping), and equally terrific turns from Gillian Murphy, who became a principal last year The evening began with a tease of one of the most beloved story ballets in ABT's repertoire: "La Bayadere," set in the India of the rajahs, choreographed by Natalia Makarova and featuring Irina Dvorovenko and Ethan Stiefel Other contestants on the show include topless model Jordan; the British Broadcasting Corp Punk Rocker Rotten on Reality TV Show Jan 19, 11:25 AM EST Punk rocker Johnny Rotten was named Monday as one of the contestants in the new series of British reality TV show "I'm A Celebrity Past winners have received a boost to their flagging careers thanks to the publicity the show generates Get Me Out Of Here!"
