As "Manic" unfolds, you may start to think nasty thoughts about the current state of independent filmmaking But he's never fully convincing, his eyes failing to suggest the rage brewing just below the surface PG-13 â€â€? Special parental guidance strongly suggested for children under 13 Running time: 100 minutes R â€â€? Restricted Melamed slams a zoom in on Deschanel's frightened yet compassionate face whenever the inarticulate Lyle is called upon to talk about what's important to him or think about love Some material may be inappropriate for young children But then nothing about "Manic" is compelling or even involving The ending resembles a surrender; the movie gives up and putters out " Their work in "Manic" is similar, but far more obtrusive and attention-grabbing because it doesn't have a compelling visual accompaniment Gordon-Levitt, who learned how to be relaxed and confident on-screen in the long-running sitcom "3rd Rock From the Sun" and put his gifts to charming use in the teen comedy "10 Things I Hate About You," has fun going rawer and grungier than we've seen him before â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? Motion Picture Association of America rating definitions: G â€â€? General audiences First-time director Jordan Melamed includes one nod to "Cuckoo" â€â€? Lyle's roommate (Cody Lightning) is an emotionally scarred American Indian boy who slips in and out of catatonia But Melamed makes no move toward a destination Cheadle's compassionate psychiatrist does his best, but he can't be every place at once, and he has his own demons Occasionally Melamed will allow some spontaneity to seep out in between heated, tricked-up exchanges among the patients, as when they bond over their love of angry punk-metal or debate which comic-book character could beat up another "Manic" would have been well served to spend more time with the always wondrous Deschanel, but her character, Tracy, is in the movie not for her own sake but for the way she affects Lyle How many more story-deprived, crudely photographed character studies must we endure? Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Lyle, an abused teen with a severe anger problem, who's institutionalized after he beats a taunting schoolmate nearly to death More often, though, he strives for a contemplative mood he can't really sustain, leaning on the spare, plaintive score of David Wingo and Michael Linnen, who composed the music for David Gordon Green's exemplary mood pieces "George Washington" and "All the Real Girls NC-17 â€â€? No one under 17 admitted It's a piddling little nothing of a movie, shot on hideous-looking digital video that illuminates the zits on the actors' faces but little else PG â€â€? Parental guidance suggested "Manic," an IFC Films release, is rated R for disturbing violent content, strong language and some drug use A few patients improve, a few get worse, many stay the same Some material may not be suitable for children All ages admitted 'Manic' Doesn't Fly Over 'Cuckoo's Nest' May 8, 9:11 AM EST "Manic," a minor-key study of an angry young man's experiences in a juvenile mental institution, tries its best to avoid cliches but also largely avoids narrative The quirks of these mental patients are dialed down from the lovable rogues' galleries of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Girl, Interrupted " Still, Lyle is lucky enough to find within the institution's walls a best friend (Michael Bacall, who also co-wrote the screenplay), a love interest (Zooey Deschanel), a nemesis (Elden Henson) and a mentor (Don Cheadle, who almost always deserves better roles than he gets) One and a half stars out of four Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian There he meets a smorgasbord of his troubled peers, and as we've come to expect from movies set in this environment, the key moments come during the group-therapy sessions in which they're supposed to discuss their problems but usually just snipe at each other " "The Madness of George Dubya" takes its name from an Alan Bennett play, and subsequent film, about King George III, who over time went mad Justin Butcher's satire, "The Madness of George Dubya," is scheduled to run at least through May 17 at central London's Arts Theatre Rumsfeld are thinly disguised as Colin Dick and Donald Duck, and the British prime minister is Tony Blear " Arnold, 25, who has never been to the United States, appears in silver paint and black makeup around the eyes to try to get what he referred to as the president's "squashed look "For that theater and for now, that's fine," said producer Peter Wilson Michael Billington, theater critic for the left-leaning British newspaper The Guardian, has been among the play's fiercest champions " "I don't know what good it does to a career to play George Bush," said Arnold Since then, the play has been picked up by a commercial management, PW Productions, whose successes include the London thriller, "The Woman in Black," now in its 15th year Nicholas Burns gives the evening's most skillful performance as Blear, not only capturing the prime minister's speech patterns but even the gleam in his eye " At the April 7 opening night at the Arts Theatre, the advance sale stood at a paltry $800 "Madness" comes interlaced with songs by veteran satirist Tom Lehrer, who updated lyrics to some of his better-known numbers ("Send the Marines") to suit the material " As Dubya, Thomas Arnold butchers one reference after another: the Cuban naval base Guatanamo Bay becomes "Guacamole Bay"; Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams becomes "Gerry Saddams"; weapons of mass destruction are called weapons of mass "distraction In the play, Bush is portrayed as an overgrown baby who appears in pajamas, clutching his teddy bear and preparing a war on "Iraqistania Numerous American producers have come to check out "Madness Since then it has risen to nearly $13,000 â€â€? tiny, perhaps, by New York standards but not bad for a lampoon However, he added, "The chance to be able to shout something against what was going on was too much to ignore The play's subtitle is "Strangelove Revisited," in homage to the corrosive Stanley Kubrick film London Satire Pokes Fun at 'George Dubya' Apr 22, 2:22 PM EST A British play that pokes fun at President Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair is slowly becoming a popular diversion Still, much of the play remains at the level of a cartoon, the cheaper jokes giving way to a long second-act rant from the a token Arab character "What Butcher captures well is the insanity of a situation where, by making a military strike against terror, we actually increase its likelihood," Billington wrote back in January when the play first bowed at the Theatro Technis in Camden Town, north London This is the third auditorium for the play that opened quietly in January in a small theater in north London and has since been gathering steam Secretary of State Colin Powell and Defense Secretary Donald H |
