See this article at: http://entertainment.msn.com/movies/article.aspx?news=129543 Quotes From Writers About Bob Hope Jul 28, 9:28 AM EST Some quotations from writers on Bob Hope. (As quoted in the 1993 book "The Secret Life of Bob Hope," by Arthur Marx.) ——— "Equipped with the sort of engaging personality that could put over any material, Hope has the practiced trouper's idea of timing his humorous sallies, emphasizing them with mugging and pauses so that they never miss." — Chicago Sun, 1931. ——— "Bing Crosby pours out his heart to the strains of several sentimental ditties. Bob Hope pops in and out of the show as master of ceremonies, bringing with him some amusing chatter on the political situation." — The New York Times, 1932. ——— "Mr. Bob Hope is a quizzical cut-up. He's an airy sort of chap who says things like, `Long dresses don't bother me; I have a good memory,' and `Love is like hash; you have to have confidence in it to enjoy it.'" — New York Herald Tribune, 1933. ——— "Bob Hope added enough fresh chatter and gags to the show to give the entire broadcast a lift." — Variety, 1937. ——— "What a delivery, what a song, what an audience reaction!" — columnist Damon Runyon on "Thanks for the Memory," 1938. ——— "Good and bad (lines) profit alike from the drollery of Mr. Hope's comic style. It is a style so perfidious we think it should be exposed for the fraud it is. Mr. Hope's little trick is to deliver his jests timidly, forlornly, with the air of a man who sees no good in them. When they are terrible, as frequently they are, he can retreat in good order, with an `I told you so' expression. When they click, he can cut a little caper and pretend he is surprised and delighted too. It's not cricket, but it is fun." — The New York Times, 1939. ——— "Hope was funny, treating hoards of soldiers to roars of laughter. He was friendly — ate with servicemen, drank with them, read their doggerel, listened to their songs. He was indefatigable, running himself ragged with five, six, seven shows a day. ... Hence boys whom Hope might entertain for an hour awaited him for weeks. And when he came, anonymous guys who had no other recognition felt personally remembered." — Time magazine, 1943. ——— "Sprightly Robert, making his debut before the network TV cameras last Sunday, put on 90 minutes of capital amusement that had all the zing and style of the real big time." — The New York Times, 1950. ——— "Age may have withered somewhat the glossy hides of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, and custom may have done something to stale their brand of vaudeville. But the old boys still come through nicely in another turn of the `old' road act." — The New York Times, 1962. That was the year of the last "Road" picture, "The Road to Hong Kong." ——— "Bob Hope, one of the world's most celebrated traveling men, undoubtedly took the wrong turn when he hit the trail toward Africa in `Call Me Bwana.' Mr. Hope has been called many things in films, but tired must be the word for him, his writers and his cast in this pseudo safari." — The New York Times, 1963. Paisley Park has largely been closed since 1996, though Prince continued to record and perform there. A reception marking the studio's reopening on Thursday was attended by members of the local film, music and advertising communities. "We're essentially hanging the 'open' sign out front tonight," new general manager Ron Scofield said. Paisley Park has newly digitalized and upgraded recording and editing rooms available for musicians to rent. The complex opened in 1987. REM, George Benson and others recorded there, and Barry Manilow, the Bee Gees and Steve Miller used the studio to rehearse for concert tours. ——— On the Net: http://www.paisleyparkstudios.net |
