But late in the going, the movie tries to elevate the importance of their relationship, so much so that it overwhelms the long-gestating plot: the search for a terrorist who fancies himself the "Fourth Flame of Communism Two stars out of four "The Dancer Upstairs," a Fox Searchlight Pictures release, is rated R for strong violence and language Malkovich shows occasional flourishes of cinematic intelligence, but "The Dancer Upstairs," for all its suggestions of intrigue, is trying, tedious, ultimately enervating " For its emotional impact, this political thriller depends almost entirely on the chemistry between Javier Bardem and Laura Morante, wife and frequent on-screen partner of Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti Rejas is placed in charge of the investigation, but it's clear the government, represented by a single corrupt official, doesn't have much confidence in his abilities The movie begins with a chance encounter between Rejas â€â€? a lawyer turned cop â€â€? and a mysterious man at a border check Some material may not be suitable for children All ages admitted Rejas snaps his picture, but his fellow guards allow the man to slip away PG â€â€? Parental guidance suggested " Malkovich's biggest mistake in his debut was allowing Shakespeare, a novice screenwriter with no idea how to structure a movie, to adapt his own novel PG-13 â€â€? Special parental guidance strongly suggested for children under 13 Scenes dither and meander, illuminating little that we didn't intuit already But ultimately, chemistry is up to the actors, and they don't have it Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian Bardem and Morante have plenty working against them: Malkovich shoots their scenes flatly, and screenwriter Nicolas Shakespeare brings a flaccid, random structure to their occasional meetings Dead dogs are strung up along the streets, and members of the nation's economic elite are assassinated â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? Motion Picture Association of America rating definitions: G â€â€? General audiences NC-17 â€â€? No one under 17 admitted Bardem is Agustin Rejas, a police captain in an unnamed Latin American nation investigating a string of terrorist attacks believed to be the work of left-wing revolutionaries; Morante is Yolanda, his daughter's ballet teacher R â€â€? Restricted But that's not true in the case of John Malkovich, who makes his directing debut with "The Dancer Upstairs Some material may be inappropriate for young children There's no fire in their eyes as they regard one another; you feel neither the crackle of desire when they're together nor the ache of longing when they're apart For a while, Yolanda simply offers good conversation for the stressed-out Rejas, an intriguing alternative to his vapid, materialistic wife (Elvira Minguez) Running time: 135 minutes Five years later, Rejas has advanced to a position of importance within the police department, just as a revolution begins to brew At the Movies: 'The Dancer Upstairs' Apr 30, 1:41 PM EST When actors turn to directing, you might think they'd be more attuned to chemistry, better able to utter the secret chant that summons it from thin air R â€â€? Restricted (At last month's Oscars, it was the first-ever Finnish nominee for best foreign-language film At the Movies: 'The Man Without a Past' Apr 3, 6:23 AM EST "The Man Without A Past" has such a violent, shocking start that some may be surprised at the quieter shock the film ultimately delivers: It emerges as an unforced fable of a uniquely stirring sort The ending makes good on its promise of renewal, with M and Irma setting forth together, if not quite hand in hand M starts again with a community of squatters, a group of kindly eccentrics who exist on the margins of society in much the same way M does in relation to his previous life NC-17 â€â€? No one under 17 admitted But before you can say "rebirth," the hero has snapped his nose into position and sat upright in bed, heading out into a new life as a largely childlike naïf But working with a deadpan comedy and grace, the director of such films as "Drifting Clouds" and "I Hired A Contract Killer" here creates a comedy of manners out of something that could be expected to degenerate into "Death Wish" with a foreign accent As the camera focuses on a storage truck that goes clattering past, the central characters fade from view Even when the script looks as if it's going to turn toward issues of vengeance, Kaurismaki keeps things gently off-kilter Soon, M's thick-set face is softening in the presence of romance, even if Kaurismaki's score favors period rock ("Do the Shake") over the soupier strains that a lesser director might employ Life goes on, is the implication, and who knows? Perhaps love will, too And when M is suddenly granted access to the memory he thought was gone, a supposed breakthrough moment proves to be a mixed blessing; the past, after all, carries with it encumbrances that perhaps are better off forgotten PG-13 â€â€? Special parental guidance strongly suggested for children under 13 All ages admitted Some material may be inappropriate for young children Taken in for police interrogation for being an accomplice to a robbery and â€â€? possibly even worse â€â€? a foreigner, M is rescued by a lawyer who appears and vanishes with equal suddenness, leaving behind the bequest of kindness that runs throughout the film The movie, to its credit, keeps catching you off guard That's hardly what you would expect from the first 10 minutes or so of Finnish writer-director Aki Kaurismaki's film, which is opening in the United States following sensational reviews in Europe and a slew of prizes at last year's Cannes Festival, including best actress for co-star Kati Outinen and the Grand Prix award "The Man Without A Past," a Sony Pictures Classics release, is rated PG-13 for some violence One day, while in line for food, M locks eyes with Outinen's rivetingly acted Irma, a Salvation Army worker whose melancholic air complements M's sense of mystery Other directors might play up the slushy aspect to a narrative with a strong emotional undertow Why? Because the one-time metal worker has forgotten his name and, indeed, his entire past 97 min Some material may not be suitable for children PG â€â€? Parental guidance suggested â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? Motion Picture Association of America rating definitions: G â€â€? General audiences Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian Three and a half stars out of four Even here, however, Kaurismaki underplays his hand ) Newly arrived off the train to Helsinki, leading character M (played by Markku Peltola) is set upon by thugs, robbed, and left for dead, only to make it back to the railway station bathroom and then to the hospital, where we see him swathed in bandages â€â€? he resembles something out of "The Mummy" â€â€? and, once again, given up for dead |
