He was 56 In Los Angeles, David Letterman remembered Zevon on CBS's "Late Show " His final album, "The Wind," was released two weeks ago The broadcast ended with Letterman speaking to the camera, saying, "Goodnight, Warren, we'll see ya Private Services Planned for Warren Zevon Sep 9, 9:10 AM EST Family and friends are planning a small private memorial service for singer-songwriter Warren Zevon His manager, Brigette Barr, says at that time Zevon's ashes will be scattered over the Pacific Ocean " Letterman talked about his friendship with Zevon, who had frequently appeared as a guest, and also played with the talk show's band Goldberg says not only was Zevon a great musician, but "a very nice guy, with a curmudgeony exterior that masqueraded a very caring personality Letterman said he knew Zevon's death was coming, but that didn't make it any less sad " Danny Goldberg of Artemis Records, in New York, says it's amazing that Zevon was given three months to live, yet completed an album, released it and was able to see how well it sold The head of Zevon's record company says Zevon "exited in a most extraordinary way Letterman said he admired Zevon's music, calling it thundering, exciting, rhythmic, complicated and unusual A public memorial service may occur at a later date " Zevon died Sunday in his sleep, a year after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer "Certainly his partnership with Crosby was very amusing One of the things that Hope did that I thought was innovative was directly addressing the audience Hope says, `Yeah, but the people who came in the middle of the picture don't There was a joke that nobody ever heard because of roars at his reaction: `This man is officer material It works out: He accidentally does something heroic and he gets the girl First of all, it was the astonishing rapidity with which he sprayed jokes at you Crosby was so cool, and Hope was so frantic He could get tremendous laughs just reacting to things, without saying a word A doctor was shining a light into Rooney's ear He lost only a little of that as he became more and more successful " Schickel chuckled as he remembered scenes from "Caught in the Draft," in which Hope played a movie star who is drafted: "He was jumping off a piano so he could flatten his feet '" "I think Hope is the most verbal of all the film comedians," remarked Charles Champlin, longtime arts editor and film critic for the Los Angeles Times "Hope was verbal, but he also could be very funny visually, too;
