Former President Bush called him "the elder statesman of broadcast journalism," but Brinkley spoke of himself in less grandiose terms It was a perfect fit Broadcaster David Brinkley Dies at 82 Jun 12, 9:12 AM EST David Brinkley, who first gained fame as one-half of NBC's Huntley-Brinkley anchor team and for more than a half-century loomed large in the newscasting world he helped chart, died at the age of 82 But in 1956 his distinctive presence was paired with craggy, leading-man-handsome Chet Huntley for NBC News' coverage of the Democratic and Republican national conventions " He stepped down as host of ABC's "This Week with David Brinkley" in November 1996 but continued to do commentaries Playing against such refinement were a boyish appearance and a jerky style of delivery that suggested a mild case of hiccups "If I was to start today I probably couldn't get a job," Brinkley once said, "because I don't look like what people think an anchorperson should look like He left amid a rare controversy, and an apology: Late on Election Night, after a long evening, he had said unkind things about President Clinton on the air, calling him a "bore " Perhaps not " Based in Washington and focusing on politics, Brinkley was known for his gentlemanly manner, wry wit and, as the Clinton incident illustrated, an occasional suffer-no-fools bluntness Brinkley died Wednesday night at his home in Houston of complications from a fall, ABC News said " Clinton sat for an interview for Brinkley's last show anyway, and after Brinkley apologized, told him: "I always believe you have to judge people on their whole work, and if you get judged based on your whole work, you come out way ahead "Most of my life," he said in a 1992 interview, "I've simply been a reporter covering things, and writing and talking about it During his career, which in recent years took him to ABC, Brinkley won 10 Emmy awards, three George Foster Peabody Awards and, in 1992, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor For the most part, very well indeed, under Lonny Price's efficient direction In its aftermath, friendships are irrevocably torn It's a difficult moment to watch, primarily because what has gone before has been so generous and so natural in its depiction of a white teenager and an older black man connecting across more than a generation being in a dream about a world in which accidents don't happen The play takes place on a rainy afternoon as the two employees are cleaning the shop and Hally (Christopher Denham) arrives after school Life may have been shattered for a moment, but that's no reason not to pick up the pieces and go on dancing The only question today is how well does the current Broadway production, on view at the Royale Theatre, measures up to the play itself and the boys" ends on a moment of uplift Not a bad metaphor for an idealized world, and Fugard works it for all it's worth It's this anger that detonates the play's savage confrontation, a moment that stuns the audience as much as it does the three characters on stage If his South African accent occasionally wanders, the nervous energy that masks Hally's insecurity never flags But the time is 1950 and the place is Port Elizabeth, South Africa, where race is never far from the surface, no matter how genial the banter and how comfortable the characters are with each other Nobody trips or stumbles or bumps into anybody else," Sam rhapsodizes " But in the real world, accidents do happen, some more hurtful than others A summary of its leisurely plot: "Master Harold" is Hally, a precocious 17-year-old prep schooler whose mother and father own a dilapidated tea room where two black men, Sam and Willie, work Denham, who looks a bit older than 17, exudes the volatility that propels Hally to the precipice Glover, who was in the original Broadway production as Willie, has graduated to the pivotal role of Sam It's a decision Hally violently opposes, and he takes out his anger not on his absent parents, who never appear in the play, but on his surrogate father Here they are precipitated by telephone calls from Hally's mother who is bringing his alcoholic father home from the hospital The actor brings a quiet dignity and strength to the play's wise father figure 'Master Harold' Returns to Broadway Jun 1, 12:47 PM EST NEW YORK (AP) â€â€? There's a confrontation late in Athol Fugard's "`Master Harold' "To be one of those finalists on that dance floor is like The older man is a latter-day Fred Astaire trying to get a neophyte Ginger Rogers ready for that big contest You have no choice and the boys" where the past catches up to the present with devastating consequences Sam and Willie are preoccupied with the upcoming finals of a ballroom-dancing contest as the smoothly confidant Sam (Danny Glover) teaches the awkward Willie (Michael Boatman) to move around the floor without colliding "There's no collisions out there "Master Harold," first seen on Broadway in 1982, is Fugard's most personal and heartbreaking play, a beautifully realized drama in which the South African writer creates three indelible characters and proceeds to change their lives At the fade out, there's Sam and Willie gliding across the floor as the tea-room jukebox plays a wistful tune As the genial Willie, Boatman is ingratiating, the unsuspecting spectator who has a ringside seat to all the family carnage They could be father and son Yet despite the despair, "`Master Harold' |
