She was 94. Meysel, who was banned from the stage during the Nazi era because her father was Jewish, appeared in many popular television shows after the war. Over the last 40 years she had played 100 roles on stage and television. As a concierge on the 1959-1960 series, "Das Fenster zum Flur" ("The Window to the Hall"), she was nicknamed "Mother of the Nation." She said, however, she was not the maternal type. She last performed at the end of May, appearing in an episode of a German crime series. German President Horst Koehler said the country had "lost an outstanding actress who got to people's hearts." She recently had been confined to bed with a broken hip. Her ashes will be interred in Ohlsdorfer Cemetery in Hamburg near those of her husband John Olden, who died in 1965, Knuth said. Buyers have already placed orders for about 80 percent of the 300,000 first-edition copies of "The Roman Triptych," said Pawel Piotrowski, sales manager for the WAM publishing house, which is distributing the book. "This is phenomenal that the book is not yet out and it is already a best seller," Piotrowski said Wednesday. John Paul's meditation on religion written after his emotional journey to his homeland last summer will be published in Poland and at the Vatican on Thursday. The Polish first edition of 300,000 copies is exceptionally high for a country where literary works hardly sell 3,000 copies. The best seller threshold for literature in Poland is 50,000 copies, said Krzysztof Maslon, an editor of the Rzeczpospolita Books supplement. The book, published by the church-run St. Stanislaw's publishers in Krakow, will be accompanied by a CD recording of the poems read by a popular actor and priced at $5 for hardcover and $4 for paperback. Posters advertise the 40-page work consisting of three versed parts, written last fall while John Paul was resting at the papal summer residence of Castel Gandolfo, near Rome. The book is "not a piece of papal teaching, but a confession of the author sharing his private emotions and feelings," said Marek Skwarnicki, who met the future pope in 1958 when the young priest first sought to publish poetry in the Catholic weekly "Tygodnik Powszechny." Cardinal Franciszek Macharski, head of the Krakow diocese, will unveil the Polish-language edition in Krakow, the city where the future pope served as cardinal, the Polish Roman Catholic church's news agency has said. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, prefect of the Vatican's orthodoxy congregation, will present the Italian version in the Vatican. |
