Whitehead personifies befuddlement as the deceived master, while Ireland offers a playful female foil to all the persistent wooing As the evening opens, the performer and his musical director, the invaluable Doug Skinner, rise out of a leather trunk placed in front of a red curtain He has the grace and physical presence of an experienced ballet dancer who knows how to get the maximum effect with a minimum of effort The back-and-forth dialogue is quick and occasionally disconcertingly topical, especially a few lame jokes about President Bush's tax cuts But then, this gifted clown has put a human face on all of Harlequin's comic antics All three stole freely from Harlequin He then moves on to several longer segments in which Harlequin is seen bamboozling and bantering with an authority figure played by that expert on pomposity, the glorious Paxton Whitehead To give some historical perspective, Irwin deftly offers minutelong impersonations of three of his idols, Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton Yet Irwin possesses a technique that seems to defy age Irwin is one of those clowns who can connive with the best of them and yet audiences still cheer him Yet it's Irwin who remains the focus of this sketch, which has a surprisingly wistful ending Irwin announces they will present "a meeting of archetype and individual": Harlequin in all his manipulative glory At times, Irwin is assisted by three young acrobats, Harlequins-in-traini ng as it were At the Signature Theatre Company, which is devoting its entire season to Irwin and his clowning, the good-natured performer has put a well-known scamp at center stage in a 70-minute theater piece called "The Harlequin Studies " Irwin's entertaining show about this insolent fellow is a mock dissertation that is part lecture and part athletic show-and-tell That's because his tremulous smile slyly hints at the insecurity underneath all that braggadocio â€â€? showing he's just as uncertain as the rest of us The evening's centerpiece is entitled "Harlequin and His Master Wed," a playlet that has Harlequin and his master (Whitehead again) competing for a lovely young woman (Marin Ireland) over the protestations of her father (Rocco Sisto) 'Harlequin' Celebrates Comic Cheekiness Sep 21, 3:43 PM EST The comic cheekiness of Bill Irwin is a joy to behold They are limber guys, more supple than the 53-year-old Irwin EU Awards Movie Prize to Scottish Film May 16, 6:46 AM EST The European Union awarded its annual movie prize to Scottish director Peter Mullan for "The Magdalene Sisters," a provocative depiction of an abusive Catholic convent "This prize is testimony to the creativity and vitality of European cinema and shows that European films can be box-office successes in different European countries while still retaining their own personality," EU Culture Commissioner Viviane Reding said Thursday in Cannes, where the prize was awarded Last year, the movie won the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival " The film was denounced by Vatican Radio as "clearly false The $28,000 prize is awarded each year at the Cannes Film Festival to the European film shown in the largest number of EU countries " The Vatican's paper L'Osservatore Romano described it as an "angry and rancorous provocation "The Magdalene Sisters," Mullan's second feature-length film, was shown in 12 European countries and drew crowds of several million To qualify, the movie must be the director's first or second feature-length film In France alone, it drew an audience of 560,000 |
