" Scliar's book was published in Portuguese in Brazil in 1981 and an English translation was published in 1990 "I saw a premise that I liked and I told my own story with it," Martel told The Associated Press on Wednesday in Berlin, where he is teaching a five-month university course on animals in literature But the New York Times reported Wednesday that its book review never wrote about Scliar's book, and it quoted Updike as saying he never reviewed it " Scliar disagrees, saying he considers his idea "intellectual property" and that his publishers are weighing legal action While Martel says his book is about "religion, faith and imagination," Scliar's is considered a metaphor for Nazism and Brazil's 1964-85 military dictatorship "I don't feel I've done something dishonest A comment by Martel that the Canadian says was misconstrued by some Brazilian media as a slight against Scliar hasn't helped " On Wednesday, Martel insisted no slight was intended and that his comment was misrepresented by Brazilian media "I don't think it's precisely a lack of respect I consider Brazilian literature to be of the first magnitude, and I would like our culture to be judged on its own merits Scliar said he was hurt not only by Martel's comments about his work, but because he felt Brazilian culture was being slighted Yet the 39-year-old Martel has found himself entangled in controversy over the inspiration he drew from a novella published some two decades ago by one of Brazil's most respected authors, Moacyr Scliar "I've received dozens of e-mails from people offering their solidarity, people whose Brazilian pride was offended," he said "What would be wrong is if I said it was my idea " â€â€?â€â€?â€â€?
