"Photographs" bounces along to a nasty little guitar riff that's reminiscent of the classic disco duo Chic, with Watley's voice sounding fuller and more sultry than her earlier pop incarnations As DiFranco says to a lover on "Promised Land," the album's best song, "It depends if you're trying to get to the promised land, or you're just trying to get by Over four years, he goes from protest songs such as "Turn off the Radio" and "I Wanna Kill Sam" to partying with George Clinton on "Bop Gun (One Nation) But for all the intended hooks, few catch the ear on "So Long, Astoria 98) â€â€? Ani DiFranco In many ways, "Evolve" is a good milestone for singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco â€â€? a culmination of her solo acoustic past, her blues- and jazz-tinged present and her still wide open future His voice is as strong over the searing production of Public Enemy's Bomb Squad (on 1990's "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted") as it is over smoother West Coast beats (most of 1993's "Lethal Injection") Still, it's a passably good collection of '70s and '80s classic rock, brought together in one place for that next kegger or road trip And then there are the sometimes loopy lyrics: "With nickels and dimes, you soon will have a dollar It's 4 a I see no need to swallow, or catch a plane to travel; my mind's not made of gravel It's also refreshing to see someone amid the present political backdrop remaining critical of the government and capitalism as she does on "Serpentine Not that she's lost her touch Each new rumbling drum breakdown, each distorted and jangling guitar, each harmonized vocal numbs the ears "Quah" was originally to be a full collaboration with Tom Hobson, but apparently Hobson was deemed too odd by the record company in 1974 and only two of his songs made the album As the title suggests, "Midnight Lounge" is a collection of chill, downbeat tracks that come across both funky and soulful without having to boom thunderously through house speakers " Still, the band was noteworthy because it was one of the first integrated pop groups â€â€?
