Moore's film searched for the roots of violence in America by looking at everything from school shootings to racism and the National Rifle Association The slow-moving film by Nuri Bilge Ceylan is about a jobless man from the countryside who irritates his sophisticated city cousin by moving into his apartment While the movie is fiction, some details were lifted straight from the Columbine massacre on April 20, 1999, when gunmen Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students and a teacher before taking their own lives The movie did not win any prizes The movie â€â€? her third at Cannes â€â€? is about a spirited young Afghan who dreams of becoming her country's first woman president For years, I tried to bring one of my films to the Cannes festival," Van Sant said The screenwriting prize went to Denys Arcand for the critically acclaimed French-Canadian film "The Barbarian Invasions," about a womanizing university professor who confronts death with humor and sharp intelligence The prize for best short film went to Australia's Glendyn Ivin for "Cracker Bag," about a girl who saves her pocket change to buy firecrackers Polanksi went on to win an Oscar for best director and Adrien Brody, the main character, won the best actor Oscar Toprak died in a car crash shortly after learning that the film was selected to show in Cannes; Ozdemir is an architect by profession, not an actor The Turkish film "Uzak," (Distant) won the Grand Prize, or second place this year It was the second year in a row that the Columbine shootings got lots attention at Cannes, but "Elephant" offered a different take on school violence than last year's "Bowling for Columbine" from Michael Moore, which was also well received "Vive la France!" Van Sant cast real high school students, not professional actors, in the film, and asked them to improvise their lines The movie starts out showing an ordinary day at school, with students gossiping in the cafeteria, playing football or working in the photography lab Marie-Josee Croze, who plays a young drug addict recruited to supply the dying professor with heroin to ease his pain, won the award for best actress Last year, Roman Polanski's "The Pianist" won the Palme d'Or In one scene of "Elephant," one of the young killers stops in an empty cafeteria and sips from a glass â€â€? an image inspired by one captured on Columbine's surveillance cameras Van Sant, who also won for best director, looked stunned when he accepted the Palme d'Or He has never had a film compete at Cannes before, though "To Die For," starring Nicole Kidman, showed here out of competition in 1995 Uzak's two stars, Muzaffer Ozdemir and the late Mehmet Emin Toprak, shared the award for best actor Also overlooked was Clint Eastwood's "Mystic River," a crime drama about three childhood friends brought together again by a murder "Reconstruction," by Denmark's Christoffer Boe, won the Camera d'Or for the best film by a first-time director Van Sant was the first American to win the Palme d'Or since Quentin Tarantino did for "Pulp Fiction" in 1994 The awards capped a 12-day Cannes lineup that was widely regarded as the weakest in recent memory, and "Elephant," though well received, was something of a surprise for the top prize They played the two cousins â€â€? both lonely and alienated, but unable to become friends At the end, two students go on a shooting spree in the hallways Many critics had favored Lars von Trier's "Dogville," a challenging, dark, three-hour drama starring Kidman and set in Depression-era America Van Sant doesn't offer any reasons for school violence; he just presents it for the viewers to ponder The movie, which Arcand also directed, seemed to touch the most hearts in Cannes, and had many viewers wiping away tears "Thank you very much, from the bottom of my heart 'Elephant' Top Movie at Cannes Film Fest May 25, 6:47 PM EST Director Gus Van Sant's "Elephant," a disturbing film loosely based on the Columbine shooting, won top prize at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday Many of its scenes have a haunting beauty, showing the country's ruined palaces and rocky deserts The Jury Prize went to "At Five in the Afternoon," by 23-year-old directing prodigy Samira Makhmalbaf of Iran "For certain artists, they've had a whole new career and made a whole slew of income from their songs being used by (rap) artists," says Waldon "Ain't nobody paid me nothin' "I often sit around and think about the things we talked about," a smiling Byrd told The Associated Press at his home about 75 miles from where the two made their start as the Famous Flames "But what if Jay-Z doesn't do it anymore? "because it never would have been if it hadn't been for me," Byrd says During that time, Byrd says, he co-wrote some of Brown's biggest hits The same could be said of her husband, 69, who looks a bit like a leaner, taller version of the 70-year-old Brown, including the pompadour hairdo Brown's mother left him as a child, and he was raised by his father and aunts " The Famous Flames disbanded about a year after "Please Please Please," but Byrd soon returned to Brown's camp as a songwriter, piano player and show member Kaminsky says the pair is owed several million dollars in royalty payments Byrd, a former Brown background singer who says she also wrote some of his songs, is a handsome, 63-year-old woman stylishly dressed and manicured " They say Jay-Z generously paid Byrd 65 percent of the royalties for the song, allowing them to secure a mortgage for their home, which is worth about $250,000 Byrd He remembers Brown joining his group and their big dreams about changing the world â€â€? at least their world "Bobby Byrd's No Byrd remembers his mother making Brown a member of their family 2 Then we started making records They credit their current comfort to a sample of Byrd's song "U Don't Know," used by Jay-Z on 2001's multimillion-selling "The Blueprint & Rakim's rap hit "I Know You Got Soul," which sampled Byrd's voice from a tune credited to Brown and Byrd At one point, the Byrds said they didn't own publishing on the songs, only writer's royalties The Byrds started talking to lawyers in 1987, after they heard Eric B The suit was dismissed due to statute of limitations, Kaminsky said At 15, he ended up in reform school for burglary Byrd's family took Brown in and helped him get a job Yet the Byrds feel far from secure Byrd claims that throughout the years, songs Byrd and others wrote for or with Brown were later credited to other people The Byrds rejected a $60,000 settlement offer from Universal Entering the Byrds' beautiful, spacious home outside Atlanta, it doesn't appear they have much to complain about Today, however, only Brown and former Flame Johnny Terry are listed as songwriters, according to the BMI music publishing company Byrd says he never protested because he was making money touring with Brown and didn't want to "rock the boat Byrd and Brown go back to the early 1950s and their hometown of Toccoa But no, Byrd says, he could never hate Brown ) The case involves a myriad of legal issues, dizzying and difficult to understand even for the Byrds â€â€? and illustrating why the recording industry is so treacherous for those who cannot master its many intricacies He still remembers the teenager he met playing baseball, a reform school kid looking for a fresh start in life Music royalties are confusing even for those who live off them While Byrd does get writer's royalties from those songs, he says he does not get artist royalties from the songs he performed on, and more importantly, doesn't get a fair share of the copyrights They say he denied receiving the money, and wrote letters asking that any money be sent directly to the Byrds "For the last year and a half or two years, thank God for Jay-Z," says Mrs |
