EST A new photography exhibit on Nobel Peace Prize winner and famed civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr "Martin Luther King is a figure that most people know about not only nationally but internationally," said Diane Turner, the museum's curator of collections and exhibitions Benjamin Spock at an anti-war rally in New York "Countdown to Eternity" opened Aug "He was just regular, and then he stepped out â€â€? and when he stepped out he became a giant," recalled Fernandez, who said his assignment was commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp In the year before he was assassinated on April 4, 1968, King was expanding his civil rights focus and speaking out against poverty and the war in Vietnam com He is seen with his daughter and wife, Coretta Scott King, hosting guests at a Sunday meal The exhibit depicts him as a family man, spiritual leader and social activist Fernandez, a freelance photographer who chronicled 1960s protests Fernandez photographed King in widely praised pictures, showing King's youngest daughter, Bernice, standing before her slain father's open casket, later caused him "misgivings aampmuseum Determined to take advantage of his yearlong access, Fernandez said he sought to capture King as a father, husband and seemingly "regular" man He is in dress clothes, his hand clasped around a football that two boys in the distance seem poised to receive " "After I took it, I felt like I didn't treat them with the courtesy of a friend, but I treated them like a journalist and a hunter," Fernandez said Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, standing in a packed crowd outside King's memorial service Fernandez said he was out of town the day King was fatally shot, but his photos provide him with memories and tales to tell In another picture, King and his wife smile at the camera while seated on a living room couch; a portrait of Gandhi â€â€? whose call for nonviolent dissent preceded and influenced King's â€â€? hangs on the wall Argentina, where he hung out at dance clubs and saw some legendary old-timers doing the tango "In a sense it's like the tango, where you have room to keep learning and incorporating new things and getting better "Assassination Tango" is Duvall's writing-directing follow-up to 1997's "The Apostle," a low-budget story he financed himself about a Southern preacher who goes on the lam after an act of jealous violence He has a couple of sketchy plots, but the stories are not developed well enough, he said Luciana Pedraza, Duvall's real-life girlfriend of seven years, makes her acting debut as a tango dancer with whom the hit man has a dalliance "It was like full circle, because Coppola always had said I should play a tango guy from way back," Duvall said For "Assassination Tango," old friend Francis Ford Coppola, who directed Duvall in "Apocalypse Now" and the first two parts of "The Godfather," signed on as executive producer and lined up financing One guy was a beautiful dancer, very Lee in "Gods and Generals," and has plum parts as an eccentric uncle with a shady past in the upcoming "Secondhand Lions" and as a trail boss in Kevin Costner's Western "Open Range Over putting his girlfriend in his movie, Duvall said he felt "not hesitation, but hesitant 5 million of his own money to shoot "The Apostle," which became the object of a bidding war at the Toronto International Film
