a backdrop for this whimsical love story between a dour owl and a frivolous cat His hunger for dance was similar to Dinan's " "I just try to keep up with her," jokes McClary, who forged ahead with the little girl balanced on his back Leading the "Owl" run-through was Terese Capucilli, one of the company's two artistic directors and a longtime Graham star dancer I wanted it to be fraught with inner meaning, with excitement and surge org Dancers stretched and chatted on the studio's wooden floor "But I love the feeling of accomplishment when you work hard And you have to rely on yourself I live in my own mind " Graham once estimated that it takes about a decade to learn the gravity-defying moves, stretches, leaps and other superhuman feats of her choreography Says one entry: "I wanted significant movement "Martha Graham loved teaching teenagers and I want to continue that tradition," Brdnik says That applies to me, with all the traveling At one point, McClary's heaving back carried a baby dolphin â€â€? 8-year-old Chiara Dello Joio, whose main concerns were to "count a lot When Brdnik was a teenager in his native Slovenia â€â€? a tiny nation, once part of Yugoslavia, that's nestled between Italy and Austria â€â€? he spent about three hours a day commuting by bus to and from his public school, home and dance class " At 18, Brdnik did well at an international dance competition in Italy and won a scholarship to study at the Martha Graham Dance School Graham had taught for decades at her studios in a town house on East 63rd Street, where her pupils included some of the greats of modern dance: Alvin Ailey, Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor, Merce Cunningham His first dance experience came when he was 10, as an "extra" in a local production of "Jesus Christ Superstar During her long hours on the bus, she often leafs through her personal journal, which is filled with hundreds of quotes copied from Graham's writings They rehearsed the piece in the lower Manhattan studios of the American Ballet Theatre, which has far more space than the East 63rd Street building where the Graham school is based "Quiet!"
