He was in his 40s, felt comfortable with himself and wanted to live a full life "

A junior high school geek, Koz practiced relentlessly After playing with musicians such as Richard Marx and Jeff Lorber, he released his eponymous first solo album in 1990; six discs, including two holiday albums, followed in the next decade "That was one of the reasons I chose saxophone," Koz says, "hearing Lenny Pickett play com/venue/229503 org Saturday at the JVC Jazz Festival, Chronicle Pavilion, 2000 Kirker Pass Road, Concord

Monroe and Carney empathize The group will perform at 4 p Would it be their cup of tea? Maybe not Before posing for pictures, cracking jokes and ensuring that everyone is happy, he chats with Abad, Paul and Gleason (His 40-plus-date Dave Koz and Friends "Smooth Summer Night Tour" draws to a close after performances Saturday at the Chronicle Pavilion in Concord and Sunday at the Montalvo Center for the Arts in Saratoga Call (408) 961-5858, or visit www

He is asked, perhaps cruelly, whether he could love someone who hated his music m It's his thing Friends and fans sip wine and nibble nervously at hors d'oeuvres Right has to be comfortable with Koz's renown and his heavy travel schedule, and would benefit from a nice smile, a good sense of humor and passion for his work
"I didn't know much about him," says Abad, who is slender and dressed in a white shirt and shorts com 3,or visit www " (The others are South African singer and guitarist Jonathan Butler and trumpeter Rick Braun He is easygoing, engaging

After Koz leaves the three, Abad all but swoons "You know where you stand with every note "
To this day Koz counsels young musicians to get out in front of an audience, even if it's just Mom and Dad "

ONSTAGE
Dave Koz and Friends will perform at 4 p "
If Koz's playing is free of the tortured squawks of a genius such as John Coltrane, it is because his heroes are more measured players, such as Tom Scott, David Sanborn and Stan Getz

"The music that I make is what I do," he says ticketmaster

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Koz grew up in the San Fernando Valley (Los Angeles County) ' "

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The lawn area of the Rodney Strong Winery is shaded by tall olive and poplar trees Indeed, anything is possible, he says: "It was like I was swimming in a pool that was one size, then one day I broke through and had a whole new lane that doesn't have an ending He waves and points at fans, then hoists his sax and blows, trading speedy licks with guitarist Tony Maiden and horsing around with bandmates Steve Thread (drums), Brian Simpson (keyboards) and Andre Berry (bass)
In short, this is the perfect setting for smooth jazz, that radio- friendly commingling of jazz, R&B, pop and world music For more about Dave Koz, visit www "I played drums for about five minutes," he says, "and I sucked

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having made a decision to follow his musical muse in the 1980s, Koz was on the road within weeks of graduating from UCLA with a degree in mass communications, and he hasn't stopped since ' "

When Koz appears, dressed in a pale blue button-front shirt, white slacks and black boots, his party-hearty stage persona is gone 1 singles and garnered Grammy and other award nominations "Instead of saying, 'Absolutely not,' " Koz recalls, "I said, 'Hey, this feels OK m

When the magazine hit stands, the reaction from the radio community, jazz artists and fans was swift -- and positive The throng responds enthusiastically It was "Back to Oakland," by the Bay Area R&B band Tower of Power, the horn section of which was famously funky "Even young high school students, straight kids, would write in to my (Web) site, 'Hey, I'm a sax player, and I just wanted to write you to say way to go,' " he says Let me think about it " He goes on, "Whether they liked it is not as important as if they respect it Not that he's desperate or anything, but still
The saxophone was not Koz's first instrument ) Koz, who is white, is about 5 feet 8 It's possible here, for a moment, at least, to believe that all is well in the world In a few minutes, their hero, the popular smooth-jazz saxophonist Dave Koz, will take the stage "For those formative years, saxophone was kind of my savior," he says "You're playing a song and people on the dance floor are looking back at you, and it's, 'Hey, this is great
Koz has had No It's an aspect of who I am In 2002, he released "Golden Slumbers: A Father's Lullaby," an album of lullabies; a follow-up is imminent

Until this past spring, Koz was best known as a multimillion-selling one- man brand: successful solo artist, radio personality and independent- label record executive "We like his music, and he's an out gay man, " says Monroe, who is 47 He co-founded Rendezvous Entertainment, an independent label "I don't care what he does in his personal life $50-$60 "It's not who I am In his case, a hot, openly gay bachelor )

But there was always that nagging gay thing

After the October 2003 release of "Saxophonic," Koz assented to an interview with a writer from a gay magazine

Only before publication did Koz get the jitters, so he did what any self- respecting gay man would do: He planned a party Its critics deride it as a watered-down simulacrum of its antecedent, the influential jazz fusion of the 1970s, but its proponents love the way it soothes and consider it a perfect soundtrack for candlelit boudoir nights The musicians respond in kind "

So do most of those in the largely white, middle-aged crowd of married couples and families

E-mail Dave Ford at dford@sfchronicle "

A lovely sentiment These fans seem indifferent to Koz's sexuality (Nonetheless, he continues to record for Capitol Records, his home for 14 years

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The two-hour show has ended with a rave-up of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish," and Louie Abad, 27, his boyfriend, Eric Paul, 45, and their friend Mary Gleason, all of San Francisco, are waiting for Koz to appear at a postshow meet and greet in an upstairs tasting room at the winery "It's not music unless you're making it with somebody or for somebody," he says )

But something was missing, at least from the public Koz persona

Either way, a case could be made that smooth jazz has found its cultural moment "All you really expect of people in this life is for people to live authentically and be who they are," he says And so, in April, Koz, who had just turned 41, told the world, in an interview with the Advocate magazine, that he is gay "It really was such an obvious thing after I did it, it was, like, 'Wow, why did I wait so long to do this?' " he says , Koz bounds onstage dressed in a lime green shirt and brown slacks

He adds, "After that party it was just, 'All right, come on -- bring it on!' "

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Koz exudes a boundless energy onstage, and makes working hard look easy "

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
About 5:30 p Then, maybe with more force than he'd intended, he says, "Yes m ' "

Eventually he decided to go ahead " He quickly adds, "Hate is such a strong word "It's too bad I have a partner," he says, presumably joking But Koz shouldn't have much trouble finding someone: In June, he was voted one of People magazine's 50 hottest bachelors

On the telephone from Los Angeles, where he lives, Koz marvels a few days before the Healdsburg show at the freedom he felt after publicly disclosing his secret
Of course, Mr Tisdale, who is African American, is 6 feet 9 davekoz He watches Koz work the room He invited family, friends --

and strippers and drag queens

Scott Monroe and Bill Carney are dressed in baseball caps, reflective wraparound shades and tank tops Record exec, radio star and smooth-jazz man At 15, he began gigging with his older brother's Top 40 band and remembers the first time he felt the magic of applause

The same could be said for love, something Koz may be moving closer to now that the coming-out process has run its course I think if someone really loved me, they would appreciate the music that came out of me There is a long silence Listen to Annette Grace of Newark: "I love him as an artist," she says, seated in a lawn chair and nibbling crackers and cheese Koz had been concerned about being abandoned by his audience, especially married women, but they rallied round "

Koz says he'd relinquish everything in his career before giving up live performance
For the second song, Koz brings out bassist -- and former NBA basketball player -- Wayman Tisdale, the first of the three "Friends "He's really hot Into this scary vortex pours musical Xanax for frayed 21st century nerves Editors refused to run a story unless Koz tackled the gay issue, which the initial interview had skirted Mugging shamelessly at each other, they create a weirdly inverted image of Bruce Springsteen and his sax player, Clarence Clemmons He has an older brother, Jeff, who is 44 and a composer, and a sister, Roberta, who is 43 and an executive who just left the MTV network after 21 years villamontalvo Call (925) 676- 8742, Ext Their sculptured biceps suggest fealty to gym regimes that would fell mere mortals "Years and years ago, if there was just a little rumor, it was my job to stamp it out," he says Dave Koz now settles into his newest groove: being an out gay man com He hosts both a daily morning Los Angeles radio show and a syndicated weekly one (it is broadcast on KKSF-FM in the Bay Area) "So I went online, and when I saw (his picture), I said, 'Oh, I'm going to see him "I find it very attractive when someone is really into what they do," he says $25-$45 It wasn't much of a secret to family, friends and many in the jazz community; still, career worries made Koz hold onto it "I tell him he's the Michael Jordan of smooth jazz," Tisdale will say later, "because he brings everyone up to his level "It was a coming-out party," he says with a laugh

New Book Gives Glimpse of Civil War
Oct 28, 2:43 PM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) â€â€? The American Civil War consumed at least 620,000 lives over more than 1,400 days and has been scrutinized, discussed and interpreted ever since And since the book is organized in chapters, he notes that it itself can be read as a history of the war and its times There are Civil War reenactments not only on the sites of battles but in places where battles were never fought It begins with a history of American slavery and the sectional divisions tearing at the nation Col loc Army Spencer Glasgow Welch, Confederate surgeon Not only are the houses full but the yards are covered with them It records advances in mapping, the use of intelligence and examines newspaper coverage of the war and its politics Papers were found in his boots that convicted him beyond doubt, and he was hanged by the neck with very little ceremony Wagner " Pvt It traces advances in military surgery and identifies disease, not combat, as the war's deadliest killer

"The Library of Congress Civil War Desk Reference" is both a warehouse of information and a map for further exploration of what historian James McPherson calls "the most dramatic, violent and fateful experience in American history "

McPherson supplies the foreword of the new book, compiled by Civil War scholars Gary W Charles Minor Blackford, Second Virginia Cavalry

The book tracks the building of military railroads and bridges, notes conditions on the home fronts North and South, and documents the use of black soldiers

Time lines inserted at intervals contain the experiences and thoughts of people on both sides of the battle lines Here, for 1862, are some of them:

â€â€?April 1862: "We caught a rebel spy in our camp last week, disguised as a newspaper vendor

"It is estimated that two-thirds of the war's fatalities were attributable to diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery, pneumonia, typhoid, malaria," the authors state

â€â€?May 1862: "My horse's head was blown off and falling so suddenly as to catch my foot and leg under the horse Jacques, Ninth New York State Militia, describing the Battle of Antietam

â€â€?September 1862: "The rebels were pouring a murderous current of shot and shell upon us, we returned the compliment; there (sic) uniform being the color of dirt, we could not see them very well, but we kept them at bay

The book tracks the major battles but also follows the supply wagons and the troop trains and listens to the taps of the telegraph keys reporting events U Joseph Chaney Brian Grimes " Sgt Scholars spend their careers studying and writing about the war and the people who lived through it

The war has captured popular imagination and marched into the domain of novels, drama, art, film and television documentaries " Sgt S The book itself is dedicated to Sgt

â€â€?August 1862: "Here too, I saw what I had never seen before: men pinning strips of paper with their names, company and regiment to their coats so they could be identified if killed " Dr John W

Now, the Library of Congress, the repository of millions of Civil War letters, photographs, books, diaries, drawings, and war maps, sets out in a single 949-page book to gather the strands of the war under a single tent The regiment, seeing me fall, supposed I was killed or wounded and began to falter Chaney Warren H Freeman, 13th Massachusetts Volunteers

â€â€?October 1862: "It is not for you and I, or us & our dear little ones alone, that I was and am willing to risk the fortunes of the battlefield, but also for the sake of the country's millions who are to come after us It ends with a history of reconstruction
