Anticipated not only by its creators, particularly composer and lyricist Adam Guettel (who has been writing the piece for more than four years), but by all those who hold out hope for an art form struggling with its post-Sondheim identity in an age of rap and incessant revivals Love at first sight That swirling straw hat would seem to be a likely candidate to eventually land off or even on Broadway Then it was on to Chicago in January for a larger production, overseen by the Intiman's artistic director, Bartlett Sher, a longtime Lucas collaborator and now an enthusiastic Guettel booster A small yet carefully realized production opened last summer at Seattle's Intiman Theatre, where Lucas is an associate artistic director " Yet love â€â€? in all its forms â€â€? remains the focus of the show Not an uncommon occurrence in musical theater, and one that sets up "The Light in the Piazza," a widely anticipated and heartfelt new stage production now at the Goodman Theatre "But for the interpretive artist, you are given this piece, and you have to realize it Mary Rodgers' recommendation? "The Light in the Piazza," a 65-page novella by Elizabeth Spencer, first published in The New Yorker "One (Clara) is in the moment and the other (Margaret) is looking back in a certain way on herself as she interprets, guides and even obstructs her own daughter "I was so wrapped up in tugging the heartstrings, but Craig brought his sensibility and his great craft to the piece so that he turned it into something that is genuinely funny as well as mushy," Guettel says with a laugh " The intense, dark-haired composer, dressed in a fashionable black leather jacket and gray sweater, sits in an antiseptic conference room at the Goodman, hours before opening night Guettel called the playwright for advice, saying he was stuck, and played some of the music for Lucas At one point, he even considered abandoning the project " Lucas provided what Guettel calls "the breakthrough" in completing the piece, reminding the composer that "The Light in the Piazza" is not only a love story but a comedy of manners, too I always felt I had an affinity for Craig's writing and began to have one for Adam and his writing "I see them (mother and daughter) as one person, looking at their lives from a different point of view," Guettel says "Adam has the same melodic gift and musical curiosity that his grandfather had," says Tommy Krasker, who has produced several of Guettel's musical-theater recordings He talks about the piece's creation, which began with a suggestion from his mother, composer Mary Rodgers, daughter of the 20th century's supreme melodist, the legendary Richard Rodgers " The composer was looking for a change of pace after writing the rustic "Floyd Collins," his atmospheric musical tale of a 1930s Kentucky coal miner trapped below ground, and a modern song cycle called "Myths and Hymns " Spencer's tale is told from the point of view of the mother, played by Victoria Clark That love includes not only the romance between Clara and the handsome Fabrizio Naccarelli, but Margaret's sterile relationship with her husband org "There's this beautiful difference between the creative and the interpretive," Sher says No decision will be made until then, but representatives from various nonprofit theaters in New York have arrived for a look No one is talking about the musical's life after the Chicago engagement ends Feb " Guettel and Lucas methodically worked on the project, first at a cattle ranch run by the Ucross Foundation in northeastern Wyoming and then in 2002 at the Sundance Theatre Lab in Utah Then Craig Lucas, author of "Prelude to a Kiss" and the screenplay for "Longtime Companion," entered the picture "It's getting the right collaborators and finding the right cast and developing the material in a way that a delicate show like this probably needs to be developed â€â€? carefully out-of-town It's emotionally and intellectually satisfying at the same time, a difficult combination to pull off The two had known each other for more than 20 years and share the same agent "I was buoyed up by it in a way that I rarely am by theater music because most of it is so umpah-umpah, umpah-umpah-pah "There are four couples and within those couples, each of them is on that continuum of love â€â€? at one end, bitterness and a kind of rancor and loss; at the other end, that glorious bloom of first love," Guettel explains Guettel read it and found the piece "a genuine love story â€â€? the right kind of vessel for the sounds I wanted to make It's the daughter who falls for that Italian, and the novella explores their love and the mother's quandary over the seemingly impossible relationship "Funny and mushy at the same time is a good combination We have been very lucky to have those productions, this one included, to really look at it in front of a paying audience "In Adam's case, whether it's the folk-country flavor of `Floyd Collins,' the gospel-pop world of `Myths and Hymns' or the operatic intensity of `The Light in the Piazza,' he seems to practically immerse himself in a musical style and then subtly, triumphantly, make it his own â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? On the Net: www " With "Piazza," he worked first with playwright Alfred Uhry, author of "Driving Miss Daisy," but the collaboration never took off, and Guettel grew discouraged "We are trying to do something that is sort of in the cracks â€â€? between musical theater and chamber opera," says the 39-year-old Guettel, making a face while trying not to say anything that might scare off theatergoers who run at the mention of the word "opera "I found it so heart-wrenching," Lucas recalls "The power and fire and heat that goes into being a creative artist like Craig and Adam is a very intense, special, inspiring thing So I think I am a good intermediary who can bring the best out of the piece "</p > Guettel's music is anything but goodmantheatr e " The composer agrees, although it has been a time-consuming journey 15, although there is interest from other producers 'Piazza' Tries Something Different Jan 28, 12:30 PM EST A young woman's white straw hat, carried by a soft summer breeze, swirls across the sun-dappled Florentine plaza and is caught by a handsome Italian youth "It's not so much the writing â€â€? I'm a pretty quick music writer if I know what I am supposed to be doing," Guettel says The story is a richly observant dissection of two Americans abroad in early 1950s Italy: Margaret Johnson, a Southern matron trapped in an arid, unhappy marriage, and her daughter, Clara, a childlike, 26-year-old woman with the mind of a 12-year-old The musical also examines the volatile marriage of Fabrizio's libidinous brother and his angry wife as well as the young man's father, Senor Naccarelli, and his loyal helpmate But the musical, which still uses Margaret as a narrator, expands the role of Clara (Celia Keenan-Bolger), a character Guettel found very sympathetic " All the comedies have a dockumentary feel, but Levy says he can't stand it when films are called "mockumentaries "</p > "I've never liked comedy when somebody can get hurt," he says Then we wrote characters, but no dialogue "We scripted an outline and did a massive amount of research," Levy said " Levy and Guest also wrote "Waiting for Guffman" and "Best in Show They are totally improvised "We listened to hundreds of records Characters Were Center of 'A Mighty Wind' Apr 21, 7:21 AM EST Eugene Levy says that when he and Christopher Guest started writing the folk music comedy "A Mighty Wind," they worried more about creating characters than jokes We did elaborate histories for each character If we think of a funny joke, we'll put it in, but the movies have no written dialogue |
