See this article at: http://entertainment.msn.com/movies/article.aspx?news=156042 The 'Idol' Phenomenon (con't) <FONT size=3>Smells Like Idol Spirit</FONT> "American Idol" is located at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Madison Avenue. Its area code is (888), and there are always operators standing by. "Idol," more than any other show on network television, has fused traditional business models with multi-leveled product placements to resemble the love child of an infomercial and a TV show. Commerce doesn't happen at a discreet distance: The judges drink Coke, the stars drive Fords and the audience stuffs the ballot box by text-messaging via AT&T Wireless. The merchandising shelf is gradually expanding with not just singles and albums (20 are currently listed on Amazon.com, with this season's first offering due before the final winner is named), but clothing, cosmetics and electronics. Sartorial options alone range from a Rockin' Denim Jacket and Baby Doll Glitter Tee to Jammin' PJs and Leather Belt with Buckle (although presumably not together). Fans can cast their vote on a Nokia Phone customized with the "Idol" logo. Apres-show, still pumped up by the latest twist of taste, they can play "American Idol" on their Xbox, or feed their own dreams of stardom, karaoke-style, with an "American Idol" audition kit, complete with microphone, CD and judging guidelines. Amorous fans can dab Idol Moments perfume behind their ears, or slap Idol Spirit cologne on their jaws. They can store their favorite "Idol" CDs in a custom CD case, or encase that signed press glossy of Ruben in a Mosaic Frame. It's an orgy of branding, on top of the show's already shrewd funding scheme. Even with its itinerant auditions and shooting in local markets prior to the final competition in L. A., "Idol" isn't paying for creative talent in front of the cameras, or covering special effects. FOX reportedly pays FremantleMedia a cool $1 million an episode, and it's anybody's guess as to how the spoils are shared from the unholy trinity of major sponsors -- Ford Motor Co., Coca-Cola and AT&T Wireless. For Fremantle, the ad revenues have translated to $101 million in spending for the first season, which swelled to $106 million for season two, and the show's rising profile has carried TV spot costs upward as well. According to Nielsen, 30-second spots aired in season 1 at an average cost of more than $207,000, compared to an average for the second season of better than $272,000. Consider, too, that the "Idol" formula is being localized in 20 markets around the world, and it's only a matter of time before the prospect of an "Earth Idol" won't seem like a sci-fi joke. Meanwhile, FremantleMedia is spawning new reality franchises that step beyond "Idol's" musical turf, most recently "The Swan," which attempts its own neat contradiction in classic Fuller fashion. "American Idol" lets its hungry vocalists land their name on the marquee by surrendering their identity to Fremantle's particular vision of modern pop. For all the judges' admonitions that the singers "be themselves" (which is frequently contradicted by very pointed notions about exactly what music would be truest to those selves), despite the umpty-ump million text votes cited in the final choices, it's Fremantle and 19 that draw the map where they will live. On "The Swan," Fremantle similarly exhorts average women with varying levels of self-esteem problems to empower themselves by surrendering to a team of cosmetic surgeons and dentists, personal trainers, nutritionists and life coaches. The transformed ducklings get a free ride on a fast lane to beauty with all the body and fender work they need. And then, if they're really lucky, they may wind up in a beauty pageant. But it least it doesn't include a talent segment -- not yet, anyway. <STRONG>=/tv/article.aspx?news=156042 class="art">NEXT: 'Idol' and the Music Biz</STRONG> </td></tr></table></td><td valign="Top"><table class="adtbl" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" style="width:300px;border-collapse:collapse;"><tr><td><table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" style="width:300px;border-collapse:collapse;"><tr><td align="Right" style="color:gray;font-size:7pt;">advertisement</td></tr><tr><td><!--BeginAd(ENT9AQ,MediumShowcase)--><iframe SRC="http://ad.n2434.doubleclick.net/adi/N2434.msn/B1417955;sz=300x250;ord=2799?" width="300" height="250" MARGINWIDTH="0" MARGINHEIGHT="0" HSPACE="0" VSPACE="0" FRAMEBORDER="0" SCROLLING="no" BORDERCOLOR="#000000"><script language="JavaScript1.1" SRC="http://ad.n2434.doubleclick.net/adj/N2434.msn/B1417955;abr=!ie;sz=300x250;ord=2799?"></script><noscript>="http://ad.n2434.doubleclick.net/jump/N2434.msn/B1417955;abr=!ie4;abr=!ie5;sz=300x250;ord=2799?" target="_blank"><img SRC="http://ad.n2434.doubleclick.net/ad/N2434.msn/B1417955;abr=!ie4;abr=!ie5;sz=300x250;ord=2799?" We will be back in September to do the gig and will give you a Stones show you will never forget," Jagger said in a statement. Mojo said a concert scheduled for Saturday in Twickenham, England, would go ahead as planned. |
