He said OK when a friend asked him to go to Pennsylvania with him to visit a girlfriend because "in those days, longhairs were like nuns Unlike roughly 399,999 others, though, he never left Hippie Offers Tours on Woodstock Aug 8, 8:12 PM EST Duke Devlin was among the 400,000 people who converged on Max Yasgur's farm for three days of Woodstock in 1969 He grew fond of this countrified corner of New York He has been in recovery for 23 years " Visitors to the now-preserved hillside stand a fair chance of meeting Devlin, who resembles Santa Claus crossed with a Harley rider "I don't know what happens Sometimes, just for an instant, it will all come back: the rain, the love, the sharing, the caring, the sense of community He gave out oatmeal with sugar and raisins to the masses and rubbed shoulders with Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Garcia " The girlfriend wasn't there Then he made new friends " Friendly with everybody, Devlin has ingratiated himself with Gerry Foundation officials and shared emcee duties for a 1999 concert at the Bethel site featuring Woodstock veterans Arlo Guthrie and Alvin Lee He has seen couples marry at the site and girls spread their fathers' ashes there On one recent perfect summer day, Devlin chats up a dozen visitors in about an hour After it was over, Devlin hung around to help pick up the mega-mess Lauderdale You've got to travel in pairs Before he knew it, snow was falling Then, to save up enough money to leave, he got a job down the road milking cows "And he looked back at me and saw an old guy But his lasting contribution to the Woodstock legacy might be volunteering as an interpretive guide at the concert site, which today is owned by the not-for-profit Gerry Foundation "He looked like an old guy," Devlin says Right now, a corner of the concert site is open to the public with a slab of a monument listing the original Woodstock performers Bethel constable Ray Neuenhoff, another concert veteran who helps visitors, calls Devlin a historian performing "Woodstock duty Devlin eventually got married and helped run a farm stand for many years with his ex-wife " Later he gets photographed with visitors from Ft "You can actually smell it and feel it, maybe," he says The group plans to build a performing arts center up the hill by 2005 He landed a maintenance job with local schools Devlin imagined something ordinary, like bands playing at a drive-in Devlin worked with the media for the 1994 and 1999 Woodstock anniversary concerts as what he calls a "token hippie," providing an authoritative Aquarian voice for reporters He never left He remembers seeing Lee â€â€? whose inspired guitar performance at the '69 show stood out in Devlin's mind â€â€? revisit the famous site Smiling at the camera, Devlin tells them, "Give the peace sign, huh?" They all do He shows an aerial picture to a trio of retirement-age visitors from Tennessee and makes small talk about Dolly Parton What he experienced was three days of nonstop music, fun and camaraderie Devlin calls the monument the "tomb of the unknown hippie," and says people need more information Devlin, who turns 61 on Sunday, figures he stops by maybe five times a week â€â€? often on the way to and from his home six miles away 15 Woodstock left a deep impression on Devlin, and he's taken it upon himself to tell tourists what it was like at the legendary festival, which went down 34 years ago on Aug But they decided to hitchhike north to a rock festival they heard about in New York's Catskills Devlin has hobnobbed with so many visitors, he has worn out at least seven laminated concert photographs But maybe the most meaningful visits are the one's he makes by himself, late in the day In August '69, Devlin was a 27-year-old hippie living on a commune in the Texas panhandle, growing soybeans and sweet potatoes And he has remained, at heart, a hippie The guy looks at the photo and asks Devlin, "Where were you here?" "I was so high," Devlin jokes, "I took the picture Devlin says he's just doing what Yasgur did before he died in 1973 " Yesterday's commune hopper is now a retired grandfather with a creaky back who has been to the site enough times to see countless photo snappers and guitar strummers It get this feeling like 'Wow!' and then once you've got it, it's gone "It's like hearing it from the hippie's mouth," he explains I wish him all the very best " He added, "I'm sure Mr Bakley was the mother of Blake's then-baby daughter, Rosie, who was born in 2000 I'm 70 years old due to "irreconcilable differences" between the lawyer and his client His original lawyer, Harland Braun, left in November 2002, followed by attorney Jennifer Keller in January 2003 Robert Black Trial Postponed Indefinitely Feb 5, 2:26 PM EST The judge in Robert Blake's murder trial agreed Thursday to remove defense attorney Thomas Mesereau Jr We're a little shell-shocked right now Mesereau Mesereau will have a great life and a great career She then returned to the bench and said, "It appears to the court there are irreconcilable differences " It's like having the rug pulled out from under us The announcement came after Schempp spent nearly an hour in chambers with Blake and Mesereau The judge did not reveal the nature of the dispute between Blake and his lawyer, and Blake refused to explain the dispute outside court " She said she hoped Blake would get a lawyer who could digest the massive evidence in the case in a short time in order to go forward with trial and I've agreed to relieve Mr I've had an angel on my shoulder since I was conceived Mesereau left," Blake said outside court "We had no idea this was coming 23, by which time she hoped Blake would have a new lawyer I just did not have a choice "I am deeply, deeply grateful to him for saving my life The action by Superior Court Judge Darlene Schempp took the prosecution by surprised and forced an indefinite postponement of the actor's trial, which had been scheduled to enter the final phase of jury selection on Feb 17 "I'm very, very sorry, that Mr " Blake sang "Amazing Grace" as he walked to his car after the court session I'm sorry Mesereau is the third lawyer to leave Blake's defense Mesereau also left court without comment And more importantly, I am deeply grateful to him for saving Rosie's life "This development today is as mind-boggling and surprising to us as it is to you," she told reporters Gibbons also said that the preliminary jury selection which was done weeks ago must now be scrapped I've learned I have to go forward Blake, 70, is charged with shooting his wife, Bonny Lee Bakley, 44, to death as she sat in a car outside Vitello's Italian restaurant in Studio City where the two had just had dinner in 2001 Schempp set a hearing for Feb I understand the expense and the inconvenience "We're starting all over again," she said District attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said prosecutors were taken totally by surprise It's like being punched in the stomach |
