REVIEW: 'Well' Is Freewheeling, Funny Mar 28, 6:26 PM EST Let's hear it for mothers and daughters Kron, dressed smartly in a black pants suit, is an appealing narrator, a mixture of sass and self-deprecation as she tries to work her way through the two tales Four other performers â€â€? Kenajuan Bentley, Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Joel Van Liew and Welker White â€â€? play a parade of other characters, including themselves as actors commenting on the people they play Let's just say that with the help of the wonderful Houdyshell, the playwright has created an endearing and enduring portrait Ann claims to be sick, permanently afflicted by allergies, for which she blames just about every illness in the universe A second is her mother's determination to save their integrated Lansing neighborhood, to preserve its mixed racial identity and yet keep it from totally declining It's these stories that her mother watches and interrupts, offering criticisms, corrections and her own funny, personal observations Kron not only shatters the fourth wall between the actors and the audience, she turns it inside out and sideways It's not as confusing as it sounds But "Well" also is a nifty, highly personal look at the nature of theater itself For one thing, Kron's mother, Ann, portrayed by an ingratiating actress named Jayne Houdyshell, keeps interrupting the play " That's true, up to a point This friendly woman (Houdyshell has a pitch-perfect, easygoing Michigan accent) wants to offer theatergoers soft drinks and to chat a bit And her play, under the precise, careful direction of Leigh Silverman, is still trenchantly autobiographical What she finally comes up with won't be revealed here Kron, who also stars in the play, stoutly insists right from the start of the evening that her creation is "a theatrical exploration of issues of health and illness both in the individual and in a community In the end, though, "Well" is about how Kron captures her mother on stage "Well" is sort of a scrapbook from the past, a freewheeling memoir that is in a permanent state of digression Yet that doesn't stop her from doing things She even throws small bags of chips into the audience The disheveled Houdyshell, dressed in a loose-hanging house dress, sits on an overstuffed recliner on one side of the stage, made to resemble Ann's knickknack-crammed house in Lansing, Mich 5 Minute Ride" (her father is a major character in that one), has other family stories to tell One is her own persistent battle with allergies, a fight that lands her in a Chicago hospital for an extended stay </p > Trying to describe the plot is not easy But Kron, best-known for her solo show, "2 Especially the mother and daughter who occupy center stage in "Well," Lisa Kron's hilarious, convention-breaking comedy now on view at off-Broadway's Public Theater " " "PrimeTime Thursday," with Diane Sawyer as host, has essentially been flat in the ratings, averaging 8 'Primetime Thursday' Exec Producer Quits Mar 15, 5:47 PM EST The executive producer of ABC's "Primetime Thursday" newsmagazine announced Monday he was quitting the job " An ABC executive, speaking on condition of anonymity, said ABC and Doss had been embroiled in a contract dispute Sawyer has attracted some big-name interviews, including Mel Gibson about his movie "The Passion of the Christ 5 million viewers a week this season and last In an e-mail he wrote to ABC News staff members, Doss said: "No doubt this probably seems a bit sudden Doss did not immediately return a call seeking comment on Monday David Doss was replaced on an interim basis by Robert Lange, who has been senior broadcast producer at the show ABC said Doss' departure was made by "mutual agreement But I am now in discussions about what I'm doing next and, of course, I'll let you know when I make a decision He had been working without a contract since November |
