No sales pressure â€â€? that we don't allow," she said "Why would you want to wear something that She wore crimson lipstick and plunging, but tasteful, necklines After they walked away, she would turn to her grandson and grumble, "What's the big deal? It's just a bra She prided herself on being able to determine a woman's bra size just by looking " When he died in 1970, she closed all but one of the stores to care for her two sons and to be closer to their Manhattan apartment So did her grandchildren Bra Lady Dies at 95 Jun 13, 4:49 PM EST Selma Koch, the Bra Lady who fitted generations of women without tiring or tape measure and became famous in old age for refusing to regret or retire, has died at 95 " She worked 10 hours a day, six days week, right up to last week Koch, who died Thursday, had been hospitalized since last week, when she fell and broke her hip at the Town Shop, whose threshold she first crossed in 1927, when she married Henry Koch and his lingerie business "The whole secret is having a relationship with people "With a little more charm Beloved N " She had one demand " Selma Koch and the Town Shop had long been New York favorites Her grandson Danny Koch said that after doctors warned her of a long recovery, "she just sort of decided to throw in the towel She ordered the latest trends in lingerie, though some baffled her " She is survived by sons Peter and David, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren The store, her grandson said, will be closed that day Rosie O'Donnell interviewed her She was an independent woman before anyone called it that Over the years, she sold trousseaus to women who later sent their daughters and granddaughters Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday In an interview last year, she wrinkled her nose at its mention She haughtily turned him down "It was really a nice thing to happen to her at that age Y Letters poured in from across the country "I always liked people Her boys, now in their 70s, grew up in the Town Shop " She stocked more than 8,000 varieties of bras in sizes covering half the alphabet With great charm, she would smile and nod to customers at the store at Broadway and 82nd Street who carried in newspaper clippings bearing her photograph That is how she met Henry Koch "We're trained to know "So I went back," she said "We don't measure anything," she said well, you know," she said " But she was loath to admit it But last year, after national news stories appeared about an old woman who still found a reason to believe â€â€? in life, in work and in the importance of a bra that fits â€â€? she suddenly became famous "So our hearts are heavy, but we are here She went to his successful business â€â€? there were four stores then â€â€? to handle his account He asked for her home number The thong, for instance Then she learned he was one of New York's most eligible bachelors She graduated from Columbia University's School of Journalism in 1925 and landed a job as a copywriter at an advertising agency "She loved the celebrity status," her grandson said "She warned me in the hospital: When I die, do not close that store," her grandson said Friday More reporters showed up "When we talk about reimagining â€â€? I think there are two departures from the original," Kent says of his production, mentioning first a mammoth new set design by Paul Brown The story, of course, remains the same: the tale of Don Miguel de Cervantes, imprisoned by the Spanish Inquisition and awaiting trial And audiences also have fond memories of designer Howard Bay's original, Tony-winning set â€â€? a gloomy yet effective dungeon sliced by a staircase that descended from the heavens "`Man of La Mancha' is not a show for cynics," Kent says "I didn't approach it any differently than I would have if I was doing a major Shakespeare production," says Kent, who has directed Ralph Fiennes in "Hamlet," "Richard II" and "Coriolanus," as well as Diana Rigg in her Tony-winning performance in "Medea," among others Kent lured other big-name actors (Kevin Spacey, Juliet Binoche, Cate Blanchett, for example) to the Almeida and he directed a wide range of plays and playwrights there â€â€? from Moliere to Ibsen to Dryden to Hare to Pirandello and beyond " No wonder Kent said yes when he was asked a year ago while he was winding down his 12-year tenure as co-artistic director of London's Almeida Theatre to oversee a new $6 million production of the popular musical It deals with the nature of theater But they, more or less, reproduced the original, which was an unexpected hit when it first opened in 1965, running for more than five years There have been other New York revivals of the show, including productions starring the first Quixote, Richard Kiley, and a short-lived one a decade ago that featured Raul Julia Kent is one of three foreign directors tackling major revivals of Broadway musicals this season The musical, to a degree, is about the juxtaposition of dark and light and power " Its story has the imprimatur of a Cervantes classic "`Man of La Mancha' is one of those musicals people have fond memories of " That's why he has taken up the challenge of "The Impossible Dream" musical "It was the most thrilling time of my professional life, to create a theater and to see it become successful," he says Despite an impressive list of stage credentials, "Man of La Mancha" is Kent's first musical Visually, that will be the clearest indication of it being a new approach "But it was 12 years, and if you aspire to be any sort of artist, you have to ask yourself, `What next'?' The danger is that you just go on And it talks about things I find quite interesting â€â€? the power of imagination and how that imagination has the ability to transform By the end of the show, the prisoners ascend into the light "`Man of La Mancha' is a deceptively simple show â€â€? and it is much more cleverer than it appears in its structure and technique," Kent says of the book by Dale Wasserman and the memorable score, music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion To pass the time, Cervantes tells the story of his most famous creation, the idealistic, some say deluded, Don Quixote, and he uses fellow prisoners as the actors "With `Man of La Mancha,' he is coming into his own, a man in full prime," Kent says of his star " The second has to do with the structure of the musical, originally a play within a play, with other prisoners almost improvisationally assigned parts in Cervantes' tale, according to the director David Leveaux is doing "Nine," starring Antonio Banderas, for the Roundabout Theatre Company, and Sam Mendes is re-examining "Gypsy," with Bernadette Peters playing the ultimate stage mother, Mama Rose Both productions open in April Kent's vision, on view at the Martin Beck Theatre, stars Brian Stokes Mitchell, a charismatic performer in the golden-throat tradition of Kiley, Alfred Drake and John Raitt And the director has surrounded Mitchell with an intriguing cast of supporting players, including Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as the degraded kitchen wench Aldonza and Ernie Sabella as Quixote's comic sidekick, Sancho Panza "It also deals with things which we sort of feel we're too sophisticated to mention â€â€? like heart, chivalry, grace and hope â€â€? and which we need now more than ever Mitchell was the only given when Kent came aboard the project "It's astonishing â€â€? 'Man of La Mancha' is a musical people everywhere respond to emotionally," says Jonathan Kent, the South African-born director entrusted with Broadway's first major reworking of the musical celebrating the undaunted, dream-driven Don Quixote And it has been known to make even jaded theatergoers â€â€? the kind who snarl at "Annie," sneer at "Cats" and scoff at "The Sound of Music" â€â€? shed a tear or two Kent, who saw the first Kiley production years ago while visiting New York with his grandmother, vowed not to carbon copy the original "We have reimagined the show visually, although still retaining the ideas that it was a prison in Spain 'Man of La Mancha' Gets New Look Nov 27, 12:22 PM EST NEW YORK (AP) â€â€? "The Impossible Dream," its best-known song, is a perennial favorite of overimbibers and bathtub baritones |
