" "In Europe, our misery is loneliness," added Natta, wrapped in a colorful, homespun khadi shawl They roughed him up before the situation was sorted out "Our countries are very clean and organized There were occasional hitches, like the villagers who chased them out of town because they didn't want the strangers there "There are 3 million people or more working in the Indian film industry," he said The image of the Indian movie business "is more about how distinct it is and how different it is, rather than how connected with the world cinema," Tyagi said And there was the fight that the lead Indian actor, Vijay Raaz, found himself in "Hari Om" is far removed from "Swimming Pool," a sexy thriller that earned Lamour a new wave of admirers in Europe and the United States Here there is a sense of community Lamour and co-star Camille Natta spent six weeks there filming "Hari Om," a French-Hindi-English road movie that found them working and living in dusty towns, mobbed and cheered in villages, stared at by curious strangers and witnesses to the slow-motion life of India's rural expanse Sushil Tyagi, the film's executive producer and an Indian who has worked with U 'Swimming Pool' Star Travels Rural India Jan 25, 12:20 PM EST His crew was chased out of one village, a co-star was roughed up in another, yet he made friends with strangers across a desert expanse without knowing their language The latter was a psychological drama and surreal whodunit woven around an English novelist, a pleasure-loving promiscuous French woman and a local barman " "I have discovered something in India which I wasn't expecting to see â€â€? a sense of freedom," Natta said They don't enjoy what they have If a few parts are reaping affluence from India's blitz of scientific advancement, particularly in information technology, much of the country still seems trapped in a bygone era This nation of more than 1 billion people can be boggling for first-time visitors, with its raucous, crammed and chaotic cities and its widespread poverty The cast and crew moved every night, setting up in a new town I think this is going to change me as a person as well as an actor," Natta said but we lost a bit of the spirit in our countries In our countries, they always want a bigger house, a bigger car, whatever You didn't," Lamour said during a pool-side interview at a posh New Delhi hotel On a purely personal level, the two actors â€â€? veterans of film and stage â€â€? said the movie reflects the often-daunting first journey of two Westerners to India, a sprawling nation where dazzling colors and postcard beauty exist alongside extreme poverty and suffering S "And even if there are 10 in a room, they try to smile and enjoy what they have The trip proves to have more emotional and spiritual layers than they anticipated, changing their lives as Natta's character is driven through Rajasthan by an Indian taxi driver while Lamour follows seeking to rescue the relationship movie studios, said it is the first in a "pipeline" of planned films on Indian themes that will be aimed at the international market rather than India's audience " "It's more like an experience, rather than just making a film A big chunk of the movie ended up being unscripted, as "actors" were simply roped in off the street â€â€? police officers or local toughs or taxi drivers â€â€? to do in the movie what they do in their everyday lives "Hari Om" has no elaborate song-and-dance scenes and no high drama, both all but required in the hundreds of movies churned out every year by "Bollywood," India's gargantuan movie industry based in Bombay While "Hari Om" will eventually be released in India, its first target audience is in Europe, where it is scheduled to open this spring Nearly everywhere, they were greeted by crowds, some so restive and curious that police had to be called in to keep order "Hari Om" â€â€? the words of a Hindu incantation â€â€? looks at the turbulent relationship of a French couple vacationing in India "But why should they make their films, why should they limit their craft and talent for the Indian market? They can create a world-class product "Even if there is a lot of poverty, (poor Indians) are not lonely," Lamour said "Hari Om" was filmed for $5 million, a pittance by Hollywood standards Still, the two actors came away entranced Jean Marie Lamour, star of last year's French movie "Swimming Pool," plunged into the kaleidoscopic world of India's remote villages in the desert state of Rajasthan for his new film "A lot of people are very lonely because it is a very individualistic society Raaz, who plays a taxi driver, infuriated the local taxi union in one town when he was mistaken for a new driver trying to steal customers He wanted to play for the New York Yankees," Brett Berns says, laughing It's a compilation album that probably won't make his record label any money, Morris acknowledges somewhat sheepishly " So Morris personally produced "The Heart and Soul of Bert Berns" for Universal "He's not even in the Songwriters Hall of Fame "There were these Jewish relatives going, `Oy vey, what is this rock 'n' roll music?'" says Brett Berns " For Berns' children, Brett and Cassandra, it goes far deeper than that His parents, particularly his mother, were not fans of rock 'n' roll Then in the mid-1960s, with pop music's British Invasion in full flower, he traveled to London to collaborate with the biggest British acts of the day " Now head of one of the world's largest record companies, Morris says if he can just get the word out that it was Berns, not the Beatles, who wrote the rock classic "Twist and Shout," that would pretty much do it for him "And there are, I think, a lot of lesser lights out there who haven't been " "Our whole lives have been kind of like an archaeological dig, learning more and more about our father," says Cassandra from the Santa Monica offices of Sloopy II, the music publishing company she and her brother run to keep their father's name alive "He has just been somehow lost to our industry," says Doug Morris, chairman of Universal Music Group " So while several of the people he worked with are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Berns is not "There's not really a day that goes by that he's not still very much a part of our lives "He diluted his own name recognition by using all these different names "What I am is a person who worked for him, knew him and liked him, and thinks he should be recognized for his contributions After a visit to pre-Castro Cuba in the late 1950s, he returned home with a head full of Latin rhythms and lush, clean arrangements that would mark his music for the remainder of his life " They previously put out two compilation albums, but they are hoping the major-label release "Heart and Soul" will give their father the recognition they believe he deserves "Not that I'm a historian," he continues He sailed boats, drove motorcycles, formed the record companies Shout and Bang, produced "Brown Eyed Girl" and traveled the globe "'If you must do this, don't use your own name It was their mother who put them on the quest to maintain their father's legacy when she told them what Berns, who feared he would die young, always told her: "They'll know me through my music Remembered by friends as a tough, street-smart kid from the Bronx, Berns initially showed little interest in music, even though, at his parents' behest, he was a classically trained pianist He worked relentlessly, according to friends, writing, producing and promoting records under several names, including Russell Byrd, Bert Russell and his own name They were babies when their father died, and they know him only through his music He worked with the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, founded and ran his own record companies, hustled songs in Tin Pan Alley, and even performed on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" under the name Russell Byrd, one of several names he used professionally But when he died at 38 on Dec I'm pretty dumbfounded by that one," says Brett Berns But if you're riding in a car and the radio is on, he's never far away 30, 1967, his heart having been weakened by a bout with rheumatic fever decades earlier, Berns' reputation as a rock 'n' roll visionary, as well as a successful pop songwriter, seemed to die with him "Sometimes it will be a horrible day, and I'll get in the car and turn on the radio and there will be three songs back-to-back-to-back that are his," says Cassandra Berns Two of his other songs, "Cry Baby" and "Piece of My Heart," helped solidify Janis Joplin's reputation But that wasn't the point, he adds When he contracted rheumatic fever as a teenager and his doctor told him his life span had likely been cut in half, he switched to music and began racing through life at a breakneck pace " Forty-some years ago, when Morris was, by his own description, a square kid from New York's Long Island trying to peddle his own songs, Berns "brought me into the business and inspired me to try and be the best I could Work of Songwriter Bert Berns on New CD Jan 29, 1:24 PM EST Remember Bert Berns? Of course you don't â€â€? even though he's credited with helping merge rock and soul and introducing Latin rhythms to mainstream American music No one seems to know why Berns switched from name to name, though there is a family theory, say Brett and Cassandra Berns He wrote or co-wrote such songs as "Twist and Shout," "Hang on Sloopy" and "Here Comes the Night" that were hits for a range of stars including the Beatles, the Isley Brothers, the McCoys and Van Morrison "He wanted to be a ballplayer "' The result, his son adds, probably damaged his legacy "I think when people do great things, they deserve credit and recognition for their talent |
