On the Net: Rosas: www rosas 15 bam Moving or still, the curtain's reflective surface picked up Versweyveld's lighting design, which ran from pearlescent to metallic green to myriad shades of pink, the work's unifying color Dries Van Noten's simple and effective costumes complemented Jan Versweyveld's set, a semicircle of curtain ropes separating the dancers from the musicians but open to the audience True to de Keersmaeker's choreographic process, many of the work's patterns evoked patterns found in nature The effect was of a half-remembered, impressionistic dream you wake from in the morning, feeling both richer and poorer for having imagined it So strong was the feeling of intimacy within Versweyveld's set, that the dancers' occasional exits from the stage engendered a surprising sense of loss Yet the work held a strong humanist streak, particularly in the inventive, often nerve-racking partnering â€â€? one lift in which a male dancer swept a female dancer up on his shoulders only to let her head flip down almost to the ground drew a gasp from the audience As the dancers ran big circles along the inside of the curtain or clustered in groups, only to scatter at disparate speeds, the effect was of wind gusting through grass or schools of fish turning and parting according to their own mysterious designs It is at times thrilling, at times exhausting As the intensity of the music and dancing waxed and waned, the pink also shifted, deepening into a brilliant fuchsia S The seven women and three men remained deeply attuned to each other's movements throughout the work, calling out to each other and smiling with seemingly impromptu exuberance When touched, the cocoon of long slender ropes rippled with energy, shimmering with movement like rain Belgium Company Dances Mesmerizing 'Rain' Nov 13, 4:43 PM EST The Belgium dance company Rosas put on an impressive show of endurance in the U org Think of the way young children tumble, jump and run â€â€? especially run â€â€? until they drop, only to bounce up seconds later to do it all over Now, imagine them under hot stage lights, driven by rhythmic, xylophone-heavy music, their lovely, sheer shifts and shirts soaked through by sweat, and you'll have some idea of the work's effect |
