As the young Guido, William Ullrich expertly articulates that philosophy in the song "Getting Tall Then there is Rivera, a Broadway legend who more than lives up to her reputation here Yeston's score sounds astonishingly fresh â€â€? from the large choral numbers, almost classical in nature, to the heartbreaking solos for not only Guido but several of the women This revival is competing with some heady memories It's really the story of Guido as boy (age 9) and man â€â€? with the man finally growing up, assisted by the child who always was inside Banderas gives a boyish, appealing performance even if sometimes his enunciation while singing â€â€? particularly in the second-act Grand Canal sequence â€â€? sinks into incomprehensibility "Nine" is a rare thing among musicals â€â€? a truly adult show â€â€? sexy and sophisticated in story and song, yet unashamed to embrace emotions, particularly in Guido's relationship with his mother (Mary Beth Peil) and his wife Much of the show takes place in Guido's imagination, freeing the story from a conventional narrative structure and allowing the director the freedom to take the story anywhere he wants The scene is only one of several highlights where Leveaux demonstrates his innate sense of the theatrical Krakowski, dressed in a skimpy, skintight, flesh-colored outfit, oozes sexuality as Guido's uninhibited mistress Leveaux knows how to get the best out of them on stage That marriage now stands clearly as the focal point of the show, whereas in the Tune production, it was dwarfed a bit by the glamour and glitz Benanti possesses the production's loveliest voice as Guido's movie muse, a woman he has used to further his film career Leveaux and choreographer Jonathan Butterell wisely have given Rivera a tango with Banderas in the "Folies Bergeres" number However, "Nine" is about more than flashy effects The actor has a genuine stage presence and charm, something Guido must possess if the audience is to care about this man and what happens to him From its white-tile setting to its striking black-and-white costumes to a sensational cast, headed by Raul Julia, it was the utmost in theater collaboration It demonstrates why after a half-century on stage, the actress remains a theatrical phenomenon Kopit's book, adapted from the Federico Fellini's film "8 1/2," is a series of encounters and remembrances as Guido frantically tries to come up with a script for his new movie Yet the Roundabout's "Nine," a more intimate, personal version, more than holds its own Masterson's portrait of Guido's wife is touching â€â€? whether she's singing the wistful "My Husband Makes Movies" or the angry "Be on Your Own" (one of the musical theater's most bitter love songs) It's a parade of lovely ladies â€â€? 16 in all â€â€? come to tease, temper and torment Guido Contini, the beleaguered Italian film director who stands at the center of "Nine," the 1982 Maury Yeston-Arthur Kopit musical vibrantly brought back to life by director David Leveaux and the Roundabout Theatre Company The women could not be better And in her first song, "A Call From the Vatican," Krakowski has the most spectacular and vertigo-producing entrance and exit of the season Another occurs in Act 2 during the Grand Canal sequence when the playing area turns into a literal representation of Venice, one of designer Scott Pask's most effective bits of stage wizardry Playing Guido's Parisian producer, the actress can mesmerize just by the sound of her voice " Achieving the wisdom that can only come from age and experience hasn't been so satisfying in a long, long time The rowdiest pipes, though, belong to Myra Lucretia Taylor as the slatternly Saraghina, who introduces a young Guido to the joys of the flesh in "Be Italian," the show's unofficial anthem The lavish original Broadway production, directed by Tommy Tune, was a triumph of style and chic Our petulant hero, in search of spiritual and physical rejuvenation, escapes with his unhappy wife (Mary Stuart Masterson) to a Venetian spa where he confronts not only her, but his mistress (Jane Krakowski), his producer (the incomparable Chita Rivera) and the perennial star of his films (Laura Benanti), among others Banderas Stars in Artfully Remade 'Nine' Apr 10, 9:57 PM EST They slowly snake their way down a tall spiral staircase, a curlicue structure that rises to the proscenium arch of Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre Those opening moments are only a tantalizing taste of what is to come in Leveaux's inventive production, which stars Antonio Banderas as Guido, a man undergoing an emotional meltdown as his life and his career collapse And Leveaux's "Nine" is a model of what a good revival should be â€â€?
